Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and the largest national park in the Republic of Croatia.
Covering an area of almost 30,000 hectares of dense beech forest with 16 emerald green lakes and numerous waterfalls, this area is one of the most attractive destinations in Europe. On 8 April 1949, Plitvice Lakes were declared the first national park in Croatia, and on 26 October 1979, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, due to their exceptional universal value. The biodynamic process of travertine is responsible for the creation of these lakes of unique beauty, where travertine barriers are formed in special physico-chemical and biological conditions. Due to the geological background and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system is divided into 12 Upper and 4 Lower Lakes.
Over 80% of the area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park are forests rich in plant and animal species, and are among the five best UNESCO forests in the world in terms of CO2 absorption per unit area. A special attraction in the Lower Lakes is the Big Waterfall, which is with its height of 87 meters the highest waterfall in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, but also the highest waterfall in the Republic of Croatia.
