  • Day 45 - Miataland to Rome

    31 Juli 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

After a quiet weekend at Miataland, we were off to Rome. However, before we got too far, we needed to have the tyre on our car repaired. Our Miataland host, Andreas, suggested a tyre site in Marsciano. To our surprise, one of the tyre fitters spoke English, so we were able to explain our problem and what fix was required.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the tyres in stock, so we would need to wait until tomorrow. However, we were off to Rome, so we suggested they order the tyres, and we would come back and get them fitted on our way to Florence on Wednesday. Perfect.

After arriving in Rome, we rested out of the heat for an hour and then walked to the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. Rome is incredibly busy, as expected. Tomorrow, we plan to get an early start and visit the Vatican City.

  • Day 46 - When in Rome

    1 Agustus 2023, Italia

Today was our sightseeing day in Rome. It was hot and humid, so we saw the sights as early as possible. The key to walking in Rome on hot days like today is to walk in the shadows, and many of the smaller laneways have plenty of shadows. As Rome was super busy, we decided we wouldn't stand in long queues to see attractions. Seeing them from the outside was s sufficient.

We ventured up and had a look at the Vatican City. Vatican City is the smallest country in the world in terms of both land area and population. The Vatican is the spiritual centre of the Roman Catholic Church and is home to the Pope, the head of the Church. From St Peter's Square, we walked a lap around the perimeter of the Vatican City. Our decision not to go inside was vindicated when we got to Viale dei Bastioni di Michelangelo and saw the long line of people waiting to enter the Sistine Chapel. We were just as happy to walk past them.

We then went to the Pantheon, a former Roman temple, which is now a church. It was first built in 27 BC, but the current building was completed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in around 126 AD. It was very nice to sit in the shade of the Pantheon for a rest. We then retreated to our hotel room to escape the heat.

After some rest, we ventured out late afternoon to see more of Rome. By the end of the day, we had covered almost 20 kilometres on foot and felt quite tired.

  • Day 47 - Rome to Florence

    2 Agustus 2023, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We left Rome at 7.00 am, and the traffic was very light, stopping along the way at an Autogrill for a coffee and croissant. Autogrill operates cafés at service stations throughout Europe, and we have found they make great coffee. They also have a great selection of fresh croissants, becoming one of our favourite places to eat on the road.

We had to detour via Marsciano to get some new types fitted. We had thought the camber on the rear wheel was incorrect, causing excessive wear on the inside of the wheel. But after removing the tyre, it was evident that the steel belt had broken as the wear was uneven. That would explain our slight vibration when driving the car at higher speeds. So, we had two new tyres fitted and balanced, and all the wheels aligned. There was a noticeable difference when we returned to the freeway, and I was happy to have it fixed.

We stopped at the Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square) on our way into Florence, which provides a magnificent panoramic view of Florence.
