  • Day 59 - Spulgen Pass Loop

    August 14, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We started with a 100-kilometre drive through the Albula Pass and Juliet Pass. I didn't have the Albula Pass on my mountain pass wishlist, but I am glad I drove it. It was a nicely made road and passed through some lovely forests. Rob then drove, and we looped back through the Julier Pass, a major thoroughfare into St Moritz.

On our return to St Moritz, we jumped on the Signal Bahn cable car up the Corviglia Mountain to get a panoramic view of St Moritz. Our accommodation hosts had given us a free pass to travel on the cable car, so too good an opportunity to miss. From the mountain, we could see just how beautiful St Moritz was.

In the afternoon, we did a 200-kilometre loop over the Maloja and Splugen Passes. You could quickly be disappointed approaching the Maloja Pass from St Moritz. There are no winding roads as you approach the pass, and before you know it, you are past the sign that identifies the pass. However, going down the other side is a different matter. It is one of the tightest roads we have driven during our trip. It suited the roadster, and I enjoyed throwing the little car through the corners.

Rob got to drive the Spulgen Pass. The corners on this pass were even tighter than the Maloja Pass. Rob had to drive cautiously through the tight corners and ensure he gave way to cars coming the other way. He had a big sigh of relief once he had reached the end. For our return to St Moritz, I got to have a spirited drive over the Julier Pass. The traffic was much lighter to earlier in the day, and I had an incredible drive in the afternoon sun.

It was another great driving day, one to remember.

  • Day 60 - St Moritz to Falcade

    August 15, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌩️ 19 °C

Our first stop after leaving St Moritz was the view of the Bernina Glacier. It is located in the Bernina Range of the Swiss Alps and is one of the largest glaciers in the region, covering an area of approximately 6 square kilometres.

We then drove over the Bernini Pass on our way to the Stelvio Pass. The Bernini Pass is on the Italian border, and the Guardia di Finanze watch every car going through the border, spot-checking the occasional. We got stopped and asked for our passports. The border guard spoke excellent English, so it wasn't long before we were on our way.

The Stelvio Pass is located in northern Italy near the Swiss border and is the highest paved mountain pass in the eastern Alps, with an elevation of 2,757 metres (9,045 feet) above sea level. The pass is known for its stunning scenery and hairpin turns. It was on my bucket list for this trip, and everyone told me I must drive the Stelvio Pass. And it didn't disappoint. The tight hairpin turns make it a genuinely stunning road to drive, and the surrounding scenery is picturesque. We drove up the pass twice to take in the road before heading over the pass and down the other side. The descent down the other side was just as magnificent as the ascent. I can now say that the Stelvio Pass has been the best road on tour.

In the afternoon, we drove over the Sella Pass in the Dolomite Mountains. And though the road wasn't as stunning as the Stelvio Pass, the Dolomite mountains were spectacular with their sheer rock cliffs. It is as if the mountains are pushed straight up from the ground. I marvelled at these vertical mountains and the wonder of how they formed.

We said farewell to Switzerland today. After traversing the Alps over the past week, I am satisfied that I have driven the best mountain passes that Switzerland has to offer.
