  • Sarajevo Old Town

    7. oktober 2025, Bosnia og Herzegovina ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Sarajevo’s Old Town, known as Baščaršija, is a vibrant and historic district that captures the essence of the city's rich cultural tapestry. Established in the 15th century during the Ottoman era, Baščaršija is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets filled with traditional shops, bustling bazaars, and charming cafés. At its heart stands the iconic Sebilj Fountain, a wooden structure that has become a symbol of Sarajevo—legend says that anyone who drinks from it is destined to return. The area is home to architectural gems like the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, a stunning example of Ottoman design and one of the most important Islamic structures in the Balkans, and the Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica), a beautifully restored Austro-Hungarian building that now serves as a cultural venue. Nearby, the Latin Bridge marks the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, a pivotal moment in world history. Visitors can also explore Morića Han, a preserved Ottoman inn, and stroll down Coppersmith Street, where artisans still craft traditional wares. The Old Town is a historical site, a living, breathing part of Sarajevo where East meets West, and where centuries-old traditions continue to thrive amidst modern life.Les mer
