  • An't Aepjin

    20 juli 2024, Nederland ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

After Amsterdam was destroyed by fire in 1452, the old city was rebuilt using brick. Of all the old wooden buildings that had made up the historic city, only two survived. One of these premises was an inn, located on the corner of the old Zeedijk (sea dike), near the infamous red light district.

Called “In’t Aepjen,” it has provided ales, jenever, food, and lodgings since 1519, and is one of Amsterdam’s oldest bars. “In’t Aepjen” literally means “In the Monkeys,” and refers to a time in the golden age of the Dutch Empire, when sailors returning from such distant colonies as Indonesia, and finding themselves short of guilders, would offer up their newly acquired pets as payment, often literally paying their bills in monkeys.

Soon the In’t Aepjen was overrun with so many monkeys that customers began to complain of the fleas. The monkeys were given to a regular customer at the tavern, Gerard Westerman, who kept them in his large garden in the east of the city. Westerman’s animal garden would eventually become Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest.

Today the venerable old tavern is decorated with monkeys everywhere you look; carved statues, vintage posters, and oil portraits hanging from the bar. You may no longer be able to pay your bar tab with one, but one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam is still very much “In the Monkeys.”

  • Brouwerij't IJ

    22 juli 2024, Nederland ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Brouwerij 't IJ has been brewing unique Amsterdam specialty beers since 1985. Musician Kasper Peterson founded the company after he became acquainted with Belgian beer styles. As a member of the band Door Mekaar, he regularly performed in Belgium and developed an above-average interest in the beer of our southern neighbors. Because similar specialty beers were hardly brewed in the Netherlands, he decided to do it himself.

The beer that he initially brewed in a squat was soon a hit. In his search for a larger location, he came across the vacant Municipal Bathhouse Funen. A building with an extensive water supply and drainage system and a steam generator, making it ideal for brewing. The adjacent De Gooyer mill is not part of the building, but has served as the ultimate landmark since the beginning. Not long after brewing began, the bathhouse also had its own tasting room and a terrace.

The terrace grew into a popular meeting place for Amsterdammers and the beer also started to make a name for itself outside the capital. Brouwerij 't IJ grew and brewed more and more different beers.

After more than twenty years of raising the brewery, Kasper decided to put an end to his work. Bart Obertop and Patrick Hendrikse became the new owners and continued the tradition of brewing uniquely delicious beer by introducing new beer styles such as the IPA and various pale ales.

It is in the province of South Holland, part of the North Sea mouth of the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta, via the "New Meuse" inland shipping channel, dug to connect to the Meuse at first and now to the Rhine.Meer informatie

WHILE THIS MAY BE GERMANY’S largest open-air archeological museum, the Xanten Archaeological Park may also be the only park of its kind in the world.

Built on the site of ancient Roman Xanten, the museum has recreated a number of full scale buildings as they were in the time of the Romans. The rebuilt structures include rows of towering Roman columns, a full-size gladiatorial amphitheater, city walls with guard towers, and even a tall temple that can be seen from the harbor. In addition to the interactive, life-size attractions the museum also has a modern exhibition building where they can display the more delicate artifacts from the time.Meer informatie
