  • Cu Chi Tunnels

    26 februari 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

We were supposed to take a scooter tour around all the districts of Saigon yesterday, but after our tour guide was late by a half hour, we learned that he was in an accident (didnt get hurt, but scooter didnt make it) so we cancelled and just checked more on foot. Today, we took a tour to see the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was eye-opening to hear a local perspective of the war and see how they fought the Americans and their allies without nearly the amount of artillery as they had. The massive tunnels (hundreds of kilometers and multiple levels in some areas) were used for in and out strategies. As the America's waited for the Vietnamese to come back out, they would come out another hole and shoot them from behind, or wait in total darkness in the tunnel for them to enter. Since they couldn't see, they would smell and listen. The Americans wore leather combat boots, and the Vietnamese wore rubber sandles. When they smelt the wet leather and they would shoot. The bulk of the Vietnamese were not fighting to support the communists they were fighting to protect their families from the attacks. It was a horrible war with many casualties. The Cu Chi plant, for which the tunnels in this area were named after, is also poisonous. 20 small leaves crushed up, and the liquid added to a drink, and you would die from a heart attack in 20- 30 minutes. I went went down a hole used for sneak attacks, Chris and I shot AK-47 riffles, we crawled through an actual tunnel (which isn't easy and they are maximum about 3' high - tougher for bigger Americans), saw the different types of traps they used to mame soldiers and then kill them. We made a stop to a disabilities facility (families affected by the agent orange chemicals that were used to spray the jungles), where they made beautiful duck shell and sea shell art - some pieces took months to finish. Stopped at a local rural restaurant for a late lunch, which was great. The men's washroom was something new to me - outdoorsMeer informatie

  • Hop on hop off bus tour

    27 februari 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Did the hop on hop off bus tour today to see some other areas of Saigon. Also saw the War Remnants Museum, which was not very flattering to the Americans and showed a lot of disturbing pictures and saw some of the equipment that was used in the war. Had our first Banh Mi sandwich from a recommendation from Spencer, which was good. Bus ride to Can Tho tomorrow. Saigon - been there done that. It's not our favorite stop so far, too chaotic with the traffic, scooters everywhere, even sidewalks, you had to have your head on a swivel when walking, horn honking, crossing a street was like a game of Frogger and the people have been the least friendly of all places we have visited so far. but glad we saw it. Hoping the rest of Vietnam will be great.Meer informatie

  • Arrived in Can Tho

    28 februari 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Travel day to Can Tho, Saigon didn't disappoint with some more chaos before we left. We arrived at the bus station with more than 50 buses around and many companies. It was a little hectic trying to figure out where we were supposed to go, but with some broken English help, we got our tickets and found our bus. The bus was a sleeper bus, which was pretty cool, three rows of sleeper seats and two levels. Our bus left at 10 and arrived at 2, with one stop along the way for a snack and bathroom break. Once we arrived in Can Tho, we took a Grab to the Sheraton where we are staying. Grab (similar to Uber) has been such a useful tool throughout our travels so far. Had lunch and some rest, then went to Hell and back for a drink lol, see pics. Stopped by a park, and we were amazed at how many people were doing some sort of physical activity, so nice to see. Had supper at the hotel now just chilling before bed.Meer informatie

  • Largest authentic floating market experi

    1 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Yesterday was a down day. We didn't do anything too exciting. Today, we were picked up at 6:30am at our hotel for a half day floating market tour. Our guide, Angelina, was a special person with a fantastic personality, always smiling and happy. We took a taxi to the river where we boarded a Sampan boat. There was another couple from Poland that was on our tour. They were also great people. Our first stop was a rice noodle factory, where everything was still done by hand for the most part, it was an interesting process, then we cruised down the Song Can Tho River in the Mekong Delta. Many boats were stationed there, selling different fruits and vegetables. This is the largest floating market in Vietnam. A bamboo stick with what they were selling was hoisted over each boat, families lived in these boats, no taxes or licenses required. We got to board one of the boats and see what it was like living on one. Seeing the trading going on early in the morning was very interesting. We then anchored in the middle of the river with a soup boat and had noodle soup with fresh rice noodles for breakfast. It was delicious. We tasted so many different fresh fruits throughout the day. From there, we toured some side canals and visited an organic cacao farm. It was neat to see how they processed the fruit and then taste a 100% cacao chocolate drink. Was also interesting to see how they made the cacao butter and powder. Great tour! Tomorrow, we take the bus back to Saigon, spend the night, then fly to Hoi An on Sunday.Meer informatie

  • Arrived in Hoi An

    3 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Travel day, our flight from Saigon to Danang was changed and delayed by 3 hours. Thankfully, we booked Skyboss tickets, which allowed access to the Vietjet Lounge, which has comfy seats and free food and drinks. Our flight was only an hour and 10 minutes. We had a driver previously booked, and he was waiting for us at the Danang Airport and drove us to Hoi An, which was about an hours drive. The temp is about 10 degrees cooler here today than Saigon and greener too. It should keep getting cooler as we move north. Hoi An is a small place compared to Saigon but much quieter, and the traffic isn't as chaotic. There is still lots of horn honking, though. The hotel is nice, and we look forward to exploring over the next few daysMeer informatie

  • Suit day in Hoi An

    4 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After breakfast at the hotel, we went to Bao Diep Tailors, where I ordered a couple of suits, and Chris ordered a sun dress. This is the same place that Spencer ordered his suits from when he was here last year. It was helpful to have the recommendation. Otherwise, there are at least a hundred tailors in Hoi An that we we would have had to pick from. The suits I ordered are Marino Wool, which is good quality. Total was $300 for all. We go tomorrow at 3 for our first fitting. After that, we walked around and then went to a massage we had scheduled. 2 x 90-minute full body aroma messages were $30. I could get used to this. Afterward, we went to the river and saw the neat lantern boats, then went for a Greek dinner. It is also I interesting to me that they don't use leaf blowers here, all streets and sidewalks so far everywhere we have been swept with brooms.Meer informatie

  • Beach day

    6 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Went to the beach for a few hours today, then went back for a couple more fittings on the suits and Chris's dress. They are all done, and we are having them shipped back to Canada.

  • Last couple of days in Hoi An

    8 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Not too much action last few days, I haven't been feeling great, but we went to a couple of restaurants that Spencer recommended and found some good brisket last night at Hai Cafe Courtyard BBQ. Spent some time by the pool reading and resting this afternoon. Off to Hanoi tomorrow. Weather will be cooler and maybe wetter as we move north now. We haven't had any rain to speak of since we left Singapore. There are only 4 weeks to go.Meer informatie

  • Arrived in Hanoi

    9 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Travel day to Hanoi. Our driver picked us up at 8:45 this morning for our noon flight. The flight was about an hour and a half. Once we stepped outside the airport, we felt the immediate temperature difference from the last several weeks. It was 17 degrees and cloudy. Might be the last time we wear shorts, lol. Back to crazy traffic argggg. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and has a population of about 8.5 million people. Took about 45 minutes from the airport to the hotel, again amazed there were no accidents along the way. We are staying at the Light Hotel, it's nice. Checked in and got settled, then went out for supper and walked around a little.Meer informatie

  • Walking around Hanoi

    11 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Did some walking around Hanoi checking things out, saw some cool areas with lakes, and cool streets with a lot of restaurants around. Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, it is well guarded, and you have to go through a security checkpoint to walk around it. We are getting the hang of crossing streets here. Just have to go and maneuver as you cross. Frogger - bring it on! lol. Also went to train street which was pretty cool seeing all the little coffee shops where you can sit and watch the train go by.Meer informatie

  • More of Hanoi...

    12 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Walked around a few more areas and tried to capture more of what the city is like. It is hard to do in a picture. The noises, the smells, the movement of everything is so surreal. All the people outside and their lives center around their stores or homes along the streets and sidewalks. Rarely do you see the locals walking too far, but their scooters are a big part of how they get around.Meer informatie

  • Tour to Tam Coc in Ninh Binh Region

    13 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We took a full day tour to Tam Coc in the Ninh Binh Region. It was a two hour bus ride south of Hanoi. We saw the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, traveled in a Sampan Boat along the Ngo Dong River, seeing the paddlers effortlessly using their feet paddle smoothly was amazing, it was an hour and a half non stop! Along the river, we went through some caves. We stopped at a back country restaurant for lunch and went for a bike ride in the country, which was peaceful. Then, at the end, we climbed to the top of Mua Caves mountain for some stunning views.Meer informatie

  • Day 1 - Halong Bay

    14 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ 🌫 20 °C

We took a van from Hanoi to Halong Bay this morning and boarded the Paradise Elegance ship for a two night cruise. Love our captains view cabin. It's too bad the weather wasn't a little nicer. It's about 20 degrees and cloudy with some misty drizzle on and off. Had a great lunch on board, then tendered to Titop Island and hiked to the top for some views. The beach was nice there but too cool for swimming. Back on the ship, relaxing before happy hour.Meer informatie

  • Day 2 - Halong Bay

    15 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Dinner last night was fabulous. The service and staff are so attentive and make you feel so special. Today is our second day on our Halong Bay cruise. When we booked, we had a choice between a one night or two night cruise. At 6:30 a.m., was a Tai Chi session on the top deck. Yes, I did Tai Chi, lol. It was actually a decent workout. We went for breakfast at 8:00 then we were scheduled to be shuttled to another boat called the Paradise Explorer for the days expeditions, which is a smaller boat with a main level dining room and a top viewing deck. This was only for poeple who were staying the two nights, Another 2 couples from another boat were supposed to join us but they canceled, so it was just Chris and I for the day on this boat, the guide was a nice 23 year old named Alex and he spent the whole day with us, they also cooked lunch just for us too, it was great! The first stop was the Hang Tien Ong cave, then we stopped at a fishing village, and we were allowed to kayak around for 45 minutes, a nice, relaxing day. We are back at our main boat now. The ship is loaded with new passengers, and there are 31 suites on the ship. We just finished some wine getting ready for dinnerMeer informatie

  • In Korea - finally!

    17 maart 2024, Zuid-Korea ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

The trip from hell to get here. Started yesterday when we were dropped back off at old quarters in Hanoi, then we were supposed to get a ride to a hotel we had booked for the night next to the airport, spend a few hours resting then catch our red-eye flight to Seoul which was scheduled to leave at 1:50am. But the plan was sidelined. When we were dropped off in Hanoi after the cruise, we decided to have some lunch before heading to our airport hotel, half way through, Chris started sweating and was getting dizzy. We called for a Grab and started heading to the hotel. It wasn't a good ride. When we got to the hotel, Chris was very sick. I knew this wasn't going to pass before our flight so I was searching for other options, thing was our Vietnam Visa expired on the 17th and we had to be out of the county by end of day. We landed up booking a 10:30 am flight at bend over prices and crossed our fingers, Chris had a terrible night and when I woke up I started having stomach issues too, lots of imodium and gravel throughout the day helped, but it was a long day not very far from a bathroom. neither of us ate for over 30 hours, hoping a good night sleep will help. We think the culprit was our breakfast on the boat before we left. Once we arrived and went through the arduous customs line, we took a bus from the airport to our condo. Some first impressions of Korea - it's cold and brown! no scooters, everyone drives in a lane, no horn honking, and they seem to have given a lot of thought to processes. Everything is so organized from what we can tell so far.Meer informatie

  • Checking out Seoul

    18 maart 2024, Zuid-Korea ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We woke up today feeling better, but still not 100%. We went for some groceries in the morning for snacks and breakfasts. Then I went for a haircut, and Chris did the laundry for us. The english speaking guy at the barber was busy, so a Korean lady cut my hair. I showed her some pics of may last haircut, the english speaking guy came over to help translate, haircut was okay, she asked the translator to ask me if i wanted my eyebrows trimmed, I said yes, but she used a straight blade around my eyebrows then shaved my forehead, my nose, cheeks, ears, never had that before. Later, we chilled for a bit at the condo and then decided to try a Korean bbq place for dinner. Some things that make finding places in Seoul more challenging is that Google Maps does not work for walking or driving directions in Korea. It only works for transit directions. So we are using a new app called Navar Map, similar but some quirky differences, no Grab here which we are missing and it is flippin cold, the humidy cuts right through you. So we found a bbq restaurant that had great reviews, so we plugged the name Wangbijib Myeongdong Center store and followed the walking directions. After we arrived at where it said the restaurant was, all signs were in Korean, so we had no idea which place was the one. Chris asked some people on the street who pointed to a second floor restaurant with a Korean sign that looked like this - 왕비집, no idea, lol. Early night tonight to get some more rest. We will explore more tomorrow.Meer informatie

  • More of Seoul

    20 maart 2024, Zuid-Korea ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We purchased some transit cards yesterday at a convenience store, loaded them with some cash and using them is super easy, just tap in and tap out of the bus or subway and it figures out the cost of your journey based on distance and transfers. We went to the Stanfield Coex mall in Gang Nam yesterday as it was a little damp in the morning, cool Library in the mall called Baekmadang Library, book shelves were so high. Had lunch at a great German restaurant. Today, we checked out Gyeongbokgung Palace and the area around Bukchon Hanok Village. Had lunch at a great Mexican place. We have been mixing it up with various culinary ethnicities, lol. Rice and noodles are losing their flair with us. We had a few nice Koreans help us with some translations in the subway today, which was appreciated and helpful. It was sunny today, but the wind was cold.Meer informatie

  • DMZ Zone

    21 maart 2024, Zuid-Korea ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We took a tour to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone - a 2km band on the north side and a 2km band on the south side of the border that can not have any military action as per the armistice agreement signed in 1953), on the way there, we stopped by the Mt. Gamaksan suspension bridge and hiked to a small waterfall. Before entering the DMZ area, armed soldiers come onto the bus, and you have to show them your passports, and it must match the information on the tour providers list. When leaving, the bus count must match what it was on the way in, and soldiers once again come onto the bus, and you must show your passport next to your face for verification. After leaving the secure gate area and you pass a blue line on the pavement, you are in the DMZ zone. In the DMZ area, we saw the freedom bridge, Mangbaedan Alter, the third infiltration tunnel dug by the North for a surprise invasion. We were able to walk a portion of the tunnel (450m), but we had to put our cell phones in lockers first - no pictures. The invasion was foiled in 1978 by a north defector who knew about the tunnels (4 were eventually found). We went across the unification bridge, this is the only bridge and highway connecting the north and south, after you cross, you can see the highway is blocked, we took a side road to the Dorasan Observatory where you can see North Korea. They have a 165m high flag pole on their side of the border, and the south has a similar sized one displaying their flag on their side. Each side has propaganda villages that once were used to try and show the other side how great it was on each prospective side. We could see a North Korean lookout tower through the observatory binoculars, and it was surreal seeing the North Korean guards moving around. In the north, all men must serve 10 years in the armed forces, and women must serve 8 years. Since the 1953 signed armistice was only a truce, the two countries are still technically at war. In South Korea, all males must serve 2 years in the armed forces before they turn 30. It was an interesting day, learning more about Korea history from Japanese rule up to the end of WWII, to the north conspiring with Russia and China to invade the south and the eventual war that halted with the armistice in 1953 after three years of fighting, and nearly 5,000,000 casualties.Meer informatie

  • Seoul City Wall

    22 maart 2024, Zuid-Korea ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

It was a great day, sunny and warmer, we were going to do some hiking in Bukhansan National Park Mountains, which is located right in Seoul, but the weather was forecasting rain by early afternoon, so we took the train to Hyehwamun Gate and checked out the Seoul City Wall instead. The wall dates back to 1396 and has 4 main gates. It was a nice peaceful walk. Saw some nice buildings and a shoe market with more shoes than you could imagine. We have seen a large police presence than any other country so far on this trip, lots of police buses (there were 4 buses in the picture below). Last night in Korea.Meer informatie

  • Trains, Plane, automobile

    23 maart 2024, Japan ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Last night we went to a Greek restaurant for supper but it was raining and we had to dodge so many umbrellas lol. Today was a busy travel day to Kyoto. Took a couple of subway trains from our condo in Myeongdong Seoul to Gimpo Airport. It's always a challenge trying to navigate the right paths for transfers and exits to get where you need to go. The airport process was familiar. The flight was about 1.5 hours. Arriving at Kansai Airport in Japan, the Customs were a little different and had a Japanese flair for sure. After we had cleared, we had to figure out how to get to the train station for our scheduled train to Kyoto. Signs were not in English, but luckily, we found some train symbols and followed those, which took us from terminal 2 to terminal 1, then a long walk to the train station. Once at the station it stressed us out, it was chaos and nothing in English, after several minutes and some broken English help we made it to the right train deck for the 1.5 hour ride to Kyoto, then we grabbed a cab to the hotel. Once settled, we went to an Irish bar for a beer and some food. The streets have a cool vibe, and it is busy in some areas for a Saturday night.Meer informatie

  • Walking around Kyoto

    24 maart 2024, Japan ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Well, spring is definitely later here than we anticipated when planning our trip. The cherry blossoms are at least a week away. Hopefully, we will get to see them in Tokyo next week. We spent the day walking around and checking out the city. Went to a cute little restaurant for breakfast, and then we went to the Kiyomizu-dera temple. It was really busy. There must have been at least 100 tour buses in the parking lot. The streets have real character, and so many are really pedestrian only. Had a great Wagyu burger for lunch and we went to an Italian restaurant for dinner and then went walking around the Pontocho Alley area, where there are narrow streets for pedestrians only, closed the night at a British Pub for a night cap.Meer informatie

  • Kinkaku-ji temple

    27 maart 2024, Japan ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Yesterday, we decided to walk to the Kinkaku-ji temple. It was a nasty day of rain, but we persevered for the 1.5-hour walk each way. When we got there, it was so busy, and everyone had an umbrella, so seeing anything was a chore and trying to walk around without getting your eye poked out was the challenge, lol. Walking back, we were completely soaked, so we went back to the hotel to wash and dry our shoes with a blow dryer before supper. I was so glad my phone survived the moisture. Without that, getting around is nearly impossible. We went out for some delicious udon and tempura for dinner. The restaurant only held 8 people, so we waited in line for 45 minutes. Today, I went for an 8.5k run in the morning sunshine, ahhhh. Then we went for breakfast and walked through some malls, then had lunch, then walked to a park, and enjoyed sitting on a bench for a couple hours reading in the glorious sunshine. I saw some plum wine on a menu at a restaurant earlier in the week, so we found some and took it back to the room. Wow, it was super sweet. We went for supper to a Kobe Tepan-Yaki steak house, super delicious! Now we are in a British Pub having a beer and writing this. It's 7:30 here, off to Tokyo tomorrow morning, our last stop 😥

Travel day from Kyoto to Tokyo, we took the high-speed train Shinkansen JR Central. It was an incredibly smooth ride at nearly 300km/h. It was just over 2 hours to Tokyo. We then had to navigate trying to find a train from the Tokyo station where we arrived at, to the Shinjuku station, which is near the hotel we are staying at. We eventually figured it out and checked in, then went for an early dinner, after we walked around a bit before the rain started, and then we headed back to the hotel.Meer informatie
