    Enkhuizen

    Flew from Houston to Amsterdam. Then hopped on a train heading north . Tomorrow I meet with the Zephyr group to do some bike touring. Walked around today and it is wonderfully cold.

    Today we rode 19 km to the small town of Hoorn. Than we rode back. Beautiful scenery. But horrible head wind on the way there, a little less on the way back. I laughedvat myself when i was trying to figure out the white boys, they were swans.Read more

    Workum

    We departed from the ferry and rode from Stavoren to Workum via Hindeloopen. . It started to rain so toured the ice skate museum. They used to make sleds out of horse jaws. Ate lunch in Workup and tried smoked herring and a thing called bitterballs. They were spicy vegetable coquettes that went well with beer.

    After lunch left Workum and rode via bolsward to Sneak. Rained a bit but saw a lot of farm land, canals and small villages. Total of 41km.

    So the view from my hotel room is nice but a rainy day. So I am going to relax and take a day off. Sort of. we get to ride freisen horses this afternoon and I don't care if it is raining then.What a great day, pastry and coffee for lunch, strolling for an hour or so around town and then horses. Perfect.Read more

    So Sexbierum seems to have several churches and many greenhouses full of hops. This was also the first sighting of wheat

    Went for a walk around town. Boats everywhere. Found the statue of the boy warning about a leak in duke.

    So rode for 47 km today out to Makkum and back to Harlingen. Great ride except for the head wind the last 20 km. Going to dinner at a private home this evening.

    End of of Zephyr trip

    So did a short ride todayvand then said goodbye to most of the group today. I rode around Harlingen until time to turn in bike. Then walked around town until I found coffee and cake. The beginning of my trip .
    A couple from Canada who were first time Zephyr people joined me for dinner. And then we came back to hotel and one of the hostesses took us to visit her home. A nice way to end the day.    Read more

    Island of Terschelling

    Took the fast ferry to the island. Then rented a bike and did a our around about 27 km. Alot of variety in landscape. Returned bike and walked around the main town, West Terschelling. Ran into another couple from Zephyr and had coffee and cake. Took the 4:30 fast ferry back to Harlingen. Enjoying sitting looking at the canal in front of hotel watching the sailboats return. Local beer is helping me relax.😄Read more

    Last day in Harlingen

    Spent today in town. Figured out bus schedule to Den Holder, had a wonderful pastry for lunch and then a boat ride out of harbor to look for seals. But really had an interesting trip. Learned how salty the harbor is. The seals hangout on the sandbars right next to the channel. I can't imagine what it is like to navigate this area. Then we ended the trip by backing in thrust the lock and side slipping into the spot along the canal.Read more

    I had my bus schedule in hand and headed to the Harlingen bus station. That is where I waited 15 minutes. But the next two changes I had to make the next bus arrived as I left the last. It was an easy ride. Found the hotel and explored a bit . i found a 3d art, a navy boat parked in a canal next to a private boat, a dike and the ocean, and a submarine surrounded by bikes. When I returned to the hotel, Pep's relatives were waiting for me. We made arrangements to spend tomorrow together.Read more

    Day with Friends

    So today was awesome. Friends from a near by town picked me up and we saw the sights. Visit to there home, lunch, maritime museum, boat rescue museum, a fort and an aquarium. Of course dinner at a great Chinese place. The fort had a weird tunnel, the keyhole shape was so the soldiers could march thrust with their packs on. The last photo shows another sand bar in the distance.Read more

    Texel

    Traveled by ferry to Texel island. Decided to walk and get a day pass for the bus. Got out at De Koop and walked the dunes and beach. Then walked to Ecomare a wildlife rehab group. Then took the bus back to De koop aand had a great salad overlooking the beach. I may go back tomorrow since I missed the brewery. Found a interesting hotel on the walk back to my hotelRead more

    Second day Texel

    So woke up to it raining. But decided to go back to Texel, rented a bike and I had a great ride. I found the Texel beer brewery. Great lunch in Den Berg. And a wonderful final bike ride against the Netherlands wind. Rode the ferry home and experienced my first Warren Sea thunderstorm.Read more

    Amsterdam airport

    Left Den Holder via train to Amsterdam, travel went very smooth. Found the motel shuttle checked in. But took shuttle back to airport to find a lite snack. Early dinner and bed. Fly home tomorrow morning.Read more
