  • Off to Wales

    June 10, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We hired a car from Liverpool and drove down to visit family in Llangollen. First stop was Chester, an ancient Roman fortress founded in the 1st century AD. Many of the buildings are done in the Tudor style and the cathedral is quite impressive. Then on to Llangollen where we walked along the canal where they still pull boats with horses... for the tourists, of course.Read more

  • Matlock in Derbyshire

    June 12, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The next part of our trip was to have a look around Derbyshire. We stayed at a brilliant B&B in Matlcok and spent a day walking around the town. We walked up to the High Tor, a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley, then walked down to Matlock Baths. Beautiful country.

Drove out to Hardwick Inn, which was the local for Nicky's cousins back in the dream time. Had an ale, of course...

  • Chatsworth House

    June 14, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Continuing our tour of Derbyshire, today we headed out to Chatsworth House. But our first stop was the village of Bakewell... home of the famous Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart. Of course, we had to have one.

Then on to Chatsworth House... a stately home on a 1,000 acre block. We were too cheap to spend the money to see the inside, but the grounds were quite lovely. Lots of sheep... we had to stop a number of times when a lamb decided to cross the road... at it's own pace.

  • Kent

    June 17, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

From Derbyshire we drove down to Kent to see the famous white cliffs of Dover. Our first stop was Canterbury, where we wandered around the old town. The cathedral was a bit expensive and we'd seen it before back in the dream time, so we wandered through the parks and along the river instead.

Then it was off to Dover. The town itself is to be avoided as it's full of lorries and cars looking to cross the channel. The cliffs themselves were very impressive and we walked a fair way along them.

  • Rye and Hever Castle

    June 18, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we went for a drive down to Rye on the southern coast to see the old sea port. Another fascinating town with a long history.

Then we went up to Hever Castle, an old castle with a rich history of owners from Ann of Cleves to William Astor, who acquired the property in 1903 and, being a fan of Tudor history, fully restored the castle and surrounding gardens to their former glory. Quite fascinating...Read more
