    Amsterdam

    25. april 2024, Nederland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

On our way to England, we stopped off at the fascinating city of Amsterdam. What an amazing place!

We actually booked our accommodation in one of the famous "Dancing Houses", although we didn't know that until after we arrived. They get the name for being a bit "wonky", which is the result of the soil settling. Many buildings like that as the original soil was peat. They used the same construction techniques as they did in Venice, burying tall timber poles into the soil.

We wandered around the narrow streets and numerous canals... a photo on every corner.

  • A Visit to the Country

    26. april 2024, Nederland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Although it rained yesterday, today was beautiful and we joined a small day tour to visit the surrounding countryside to see the dikes, old towns and, of course, tulips.

It was interesting to learn the history of how they reclaimed the land and the ongoing management to this very day. We stopped at a working windmill to learn how they pump the water up multiple levels and eventually, the sea. A bit of trivia for you... if the windmill blades are stopped as a cross (+), then the windmill is still operational. If the blades are stopped as an x, the windmill is not in use.

There were originally 10,000 windmills in the Netherlands, but today there is less than 1,000. Interesting that despite their size, they windmills are easily dismantled and can be transported somewhere else where they're needed.

  • Tulips

    26. april 2024, Nederland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

After visiting the windmills, we headed out to a tulip farm. The owners also run over a hundred dairy cows and a few sheep,

The tulips were awesome... the majority of these farms are growing tulips for their bulbs, whereas the ones grown for their flowers are done in greenhouses.

It was a great day out and we learned a lot about the history of this fascinating country

  • King's Day

    27. april 2024, Nederland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We timed our visit to Amsterdam perfectly as today is King's Day, a day when the entire population holds a giant party to celebrate their King. Sounded like an excuse for a party, but hey... I was up for it.

Everyone wears orange and the police turn a blind eye to drinking and smoking joints in public. We have never seen anything like it... music blaring and people dancing on every street. The canals were full of boats with their own music and dancing. What a party!

But overall, everyone was really well behaved, they were here to have fun... and it was!

  • Germany

    2. mai 2024, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

  • Black Forest

    4. mai 2024, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Took a break from chilling to go for a drive down to Freiberg and Triberg, in the heart of the Black Forest.

Triberg, considered the home of the cuckoo clock, is a beautiful little town with stunning waterfalls and pine forests. A great place to end our visit to Germany.Les mer

  • London

  • Oxford

    10. mai 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

From London we hopped on a train to the university town of Oxford. A very interesting town with lots of old buildings. Many of the locations here are famous for being in the Harry Potter films. Needless to say, there are oodles of HP memorabilia we could have bought... but didn't.Les mer

  • Even More Oxford

    12. mai 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

What an interesting town. We walked along the old canal up to the Natural History Museum. Then walked down along the Thames River... lovely.

  • Stratford-upon-Avon

    16. mai 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Grabbed an early train to visit the home of Shakespeare. A small, but pretty town, filled with old tutor-style buildings from the 15th century. And there's a few Shakespeare statues around...

  • Meeting the Kids in York

We travelled to York today to meet up with the kids for a family 3 week tour of Yorkshire and Scotland. It was fantastic to see everyone again.

  • Scarborough

    21. mai 2024, England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After meeting the kids and hiring a car, we headed towards Scarborough, which is where Nicky's mum was brought up. The main purpose of this trip was to spread her ashes on the Yorkshire Moors where she used to walk as a young girl. Nicky's brothers are also joining us for a couple of days to see the area where their mum grew up.

OAlong the way, we stopped at Bempton Cliffs to see the puffins.
