    Windermere

    Now we head back south. But first, a stop in the Lakes District to see yet more fantastic scenery.

    One of the highlights of Northumberland is Hadrian's Wall, which stretches from coast to coast. It was built in AD122 by emperor Hadrian to define the northern border of the Roman Empire in England.

    Our next stop is to Northumberland, just below Scotland. A beautiful area with lots of lovely scenery and history.

    Our Schengen visa is coming to an end, so it's time to leave the EU and head over to the UK. First stop, Langollen to visit family.

  • Sanary-sur-Mer

    Next stop is Sanary-sur-Mer, a lovely little coastal town in the south of France. We're here to meet friends and visit Jusť Rosé, an annual wine festival, focussing on Rosé wines from the local region. What a wonderful weekend with some most excellent friends and wine.Read more

    After Portugal, we flew to Marseille and stayed down near the old Port. It's an interesting place and we underestimated our time here. Guess we'll have to come back.

    Just a half hour ferry ride from Tavira town brings you to the beautiful beaches of Tavira.

    Next stop is Tavira, a lovely beachside community east of Faro.

    Still exploring the Algarve region with a few days in Lagos. A really nice place with spectacular cliffs and beaches.

  • Albufeira

    We travel now to the Algarve region in the south of Portugal to the town of Albufeira. A nice little place with a lovely beach, but a bit of a party town packed with young tourists from the UK.

    Next up is Évora, an historic walked city east of Lisbon. A lot of history here.

    Next stop in our Portugese adventure is Óbidos, a lovely walled town on a hill north of Lisbon.

  • Pena Palace

    Just outside Lisbon is the town of Sintra, home to the beautiful Pena Palace and acres of gardens.

  • Nazaré

    Next on the list was a quick stop to Nazaré, famous for the biggest waves on the planet. Unfortunately the big waves don't come until November, but it was still s pretty impressive surf.

  • Tomar

    Next stop in Portugal is the old town of Tomar, famous for being the home of the Knights Templar. One of the highlights was visiting the Convent of the Order of Christ and castle on the hill overlooking Tomar.

    This massive medieval building was built over 5 centuries by the Knights Templar, who were eventually renamed the Knights of the Order of Christ after falling out with the pope.

    Our next destination is Portugal. First stop is Porto, known for its architecture and colourful buildings.

  • Toledo

    March 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

    We did a day trip from Madrid to the old town of Toledo. A great place for history, but being perched on top of a small mountain means everywhere is uphill.

    One of the more interesting stops was the Museo Cromatica, a quirky little museum of musical instruments decorated by artists. You get a glass of wine when you enter and there was live entertainment to boot.

    A really good day, but hard on the legs.

    Madrid is a seriously large city but full of delightful architecture, history and of course, food.

  • Pintxos

    March 20 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    One of the wonderful aspects of San Sebastian is the food. In particular, Pintxos (peen-chos), a Basque version of Tapas.

    The big difference from Tapas is the variety of delicacies. Every bar has their own recipes and they are delicious. You've got to add these to the bucket list!Read more
