  • Yosemite National Park

    14 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Drove from Central San Francisco to Yosemite NP via Oakland Bridge. We had free range driving at Yosemite but in the summer I was told there are severe restictions because you have to use a shuttle service to get around. All the superlative comments are worth it. The Bridal Veil Falls were particulalry impressive as the side winds moved the falls sideways. On our way out of the valley we stayed at the Cedar Lodge Hotel, El Portal. Have since found out there was a murder near the room where we stayed!Leia mais

  • Death Valley

    15 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Drove from Yosemite to Death Valley via Fresno, Bakersfield and across the Sierra Nevada to Ridgecrest and Stovepipe Wells. We'd intended to follow the Scenic White Wolf Road out of Yosemite to Death Valley but the it was blocked with snow. It was a full day's drive but the open roads in the states are a pleasure to drive - 460 miles no problem!Leia mais

Superb views most of the journey except Pahrump, which is a blot on the landscape! Visited all the main hotels inc Madalay Bay, Luxor, Treasure Island, Mirage, MGM, New York, Caesars Palace, Venetian etc, etc. We stayed in the Excalibur, which was great fun. The free show at Treasure island was ecellent. Not being gamblers, two days was enough.Leia mais

  • Hoover Dam

    18 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

What a great spot.Superb views most of the way and watch out for Lake Mead on leaving Boulder City (follow directions for cars). Fascinating history and very busy when we were there. The new bridge must take a lot of traffic way from the top of the dam road that was a major congestion spot.Leia mais

  • Grand Canyon

    19 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Hoover Dam to Grand Canyon Village via Kingman and Williams via Route 66 in places. Scenic roads IS 15 US 93, IS 40 & SR 64. Views of Grand Canyon were awesome, especially our return for the evening sunset at Hopi Point. Our hotel at Tusyan was very handy for the airport the next day where helicopter pilots queued to take us over the Canyon. Probably the most enjoyable part of a holiday we've ever experienced. It was just spectacular to be traversing the plateau at tree top level and then whoa, you're over the Canyon. Not good for the squeamish!Leia mais

Couldn’t take the Kolob Canyon road from Zion Canyon due to snow.

Moved to Bryce Canyon NP via Red Canyon, Bryce, then on to and Escalante/Capitol Reef Canyons, including the Kaiparowits Plateau, Circle Cliffs and Henry Mountains. Exceptional views most of the route, especially Bryce.Leia mais

  • Kayenta

    22 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ -1 °C

Monument Valley NP Navajo Tribal Park via Glen Canyon National Nat Rec Area, Hite Crossing Viewpoint, White Canyon, Jacob’s Chair, Natural Bridges National Monument, Grand Gulch Plateau, Cedar Messa, Moki Dugway Switchback, Valley of the Gods, Mexican Hat and Kayenta. Exceptional views most of the route, especially.

The Mokidugway switchback at Valley of the Gods is awesome and not for the fainthearted. The excellent Sr 261 road across the Cedar Messa Plateau changes to a dirt track and drops 1100 ft in 3 miles!! I'm busy admiring the shear-drop view over Valley of the Gods when this Native American lady taps me on the shoulder to sell trinkets. I just abour messed myself.

Missed the San Juan Goosenecks and wished we hadn’t!

Monument Valley’s natural beauty has been devastated by the Navajo People – litter all around and shacks scattered across the desert. The Monument Valley Visitor Centre is a disgrace.

  • Los Angeles

    28 de março de 2001, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Los Angeles via Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu, Venice, Marina Del Ray & LAX Airport. Awful roads, tacky scenes and generally unpleasant.

LAX Airport is superb – it makes Heathrow look like a slum - easy to access and exit – good bus shuttles between car hire centres/hotels and airportLeia mais

Immense travel across the desert with awesome views. The Joshua Tree NP is well worth the visit

A fantastic drop via Yucca Valley into Redlands and the urban freeway into LA with super views of the San Bernardino Mountains – only spoilt by the LA smog and all the traffic doing 75+mph on both sides of the IS10!!Leia mais
