Not meaning in any way to romanticize this practice, but I remember once on the Sanabrés when I went to an old lavadero to soak my feet in the icy water. A elderly woman came out to talk to me and told me how she missed, NOT the washing itself, but the regularity of the socializing and the bonds that were forged there. She said now that there are washing machines, she never sees the other women.
