Daisy Geyser

Right after Old Faithful, we hurried off to make the predicted Daisy Geyser at 10:28. It was a nice walk along the river with a few other features along the way.

And three bison! This was a little disconcerting. All the other bison we had seen from the safety of the car. I kept my eyes on them.

Daisy geyser was nice and because we were closer, we could hear the hissing and swooshing sounds more.Meer informatie

Geyser trail

After Daisy Geyser, we passed the bison again - quickly - and took the trail back along so many amazing features.

The earth is alive!

So many pools and springs and vents and geysers.

West Thumb Geyser Basin

After the amazing area around Norris Basin and Old Faithful, you think you’ve seen all of the cool geothermal stuff. But no. Yellowstone has more to give. This time it is a geothermally active area ….right along side the huge and beautiful Yellowstone Lake.

Seeing this bubbling, boiling, churning pool right by the icy lake is eerie and impressive.

Black Pool

Why is it called Black Pool when it is such a stunning blue? I don’t know. There was no info panel. But I do know it is stunning!

Frozen lake

This is late May…and large portions of this west thumb of Lake Yellowstone are still frozen. Where the ice is broken you can see how thick it is! Brrrrrrr

Moose sighting

There it is again…. You see cars on the side of the road - you stop!

A lovely moose having a chow down on the side of the lake. Hard to get a shot of him with his head up because he was digging that grass, but was so fun to watch.Meer informatie

Bison and geothermal

It started snowing a little more as we were coming up to the mud volcano. There were also some lovely bison nearby ….which is cool but also a little intimidating.

Also - when you see bison poop on the boardwalk you k ow they can appear anywhere!

As we started up the path, the snow picked up a bit (but nothing like we would experience later in the day!).

Sulphur Cauldron

Right along the Yellowstone River is this Sulphur Cauldron. And yes it smells bad. Warm steam hits your face…and smells of rotten eggs. 🤮 but cool to see and experience.

There is this spot in the parking lot there where a new spot melted the asphalt! There is most definitely activity all under foot.Meer informatie

Firehole Falls

On one of our Visitor Center stops, we saw a map of all the water falls in the park. At that point we had only been to Gibbon Falls. So when Otis says to stop for a view of falls, we listen.

This little 2 mile loop off the Grand Loop was, as always, worth it. Lovely falls, pretty drive along the river, interesting views and a swimming hole that was not open yet. One of the few places you can swim in the park.Meer informatie

Huge herd

After our freezing and wet misadventure at Grand Prismatic Spring, we just wanted to get to West Yellowstone, have a beer and get warm and dry.

Traffic slowed and we saw a few deer and a couple bison. We were on the fence about pulling over and then decided of course we will.

OMG. So glad we did. A HUGE herd of bison were right up by the pull out and across the meadow. At least 50? Some babies. Just stunning.

After taking a million pictures and grinning a lot, we pulled back out to the road and saw another 15 or so on the main road other side.

Awe inspiring. Amazing. Stunning.
