Den Mythen nach ist die Isla del Sol die Wiege der Inka. Laut Legende schickte der Sonnengott Inti seine Kinder Manco Capac und Mama Ocllo auf der Insel zur Erde. Von hier zogen sie aus, um das Reich der Inka zu gründen. Die Sonneninsel gilt damit als Ursprung des Inka-Imperiums.
