  • Well we came to Spain to eat...

    June 30, 2015 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

And eat we did! Tonight we ate the most amazing desert; coconut cream wrapped in thin slice of pineapple. Drizzled on top was a delightful raspberry sauce. Buen provecho! Desert seems to be the theme of the day. For lunch, we ended with a chilled berry soup with a drop of vanilla ice cream. Also here are some photos of the beautiful Burgos cathedral.Read more

  • 22k past Leon

    July 2, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

And we're back on the trail! We took a few days rest to visit the larger cities of Burgos and Leon so now our feet (and our bellies!) feel great. Our last dinner in Leon was fantastic; I had salmon crepes and pork chops with a berry sauce, and mom had scallops and seafood stew. In Leon we visited the cathedral and the basilica. The cathedral is an excellent example of gothic architecture with beautiful stained glass. But we were blown away by the basilica, which had amazing 13th century paintings on the wall. We were not allowed to take pictures, but I highly recommend a google image search! We know we have our walking legs on because today's13 miles felt very easy! Tomorrow we have an 18 mile day. We are at the foothills of the mountains and will start our largest climbs in a few days. The country side is beautiful and we are enjoying our journey.Read more

  • Villafranca

    July 6, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Yesterday was a truly spectacular day! Our hike was gorgeous as we walked up a mountain to our highest point of the journey. It was challenging, but we were rewarded by beautiful views at every turn! Take a look at the map that we will post to get an idea of the steepness of the trip; we are about 2/3 of the way through. Besides the beauty of the day, we were on a mission. It was Blaines birthday, and we wanted to make him a special surprise. Along the way we stopped everyone we met and asked them to make a personalized video saying happy birthday in their language. Since many new people started in Leon, it was a great way to meet people. Everyone loved the idea! One group even chased us down asking to be in the video! We have many nationalities represented, from Japanese to French. The video taking was so popular that now whenever people pass us they shout "Blaine! Blaine!" (They are fascinated by the name). We had quite a confusing time trying to explain to a French couple that we were not actually Blaine. The grand finale was when we asked a Spanish man. It turns out he sings professionally, and he chose to sing a popular French pilgrim song. He made a huge show, and everyone in the cafe was either taking a video or singing along! Even though taking the videos added about an hour and a half to our journey, we had so much fun and it truly encompassed the pilgrim spirit!Read more

  • Moving along!

    July 8, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today we are staying at the base of a mountain with a large climb tomorrow. We are enjoying the trail!

  • Almost there!

    July 12, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

During the past few days we crossed our highest point and our steepest point ,along with a few other smaller mountain passes , only to be rewarded with the finest albergue we have yet to stay at. It had beautiful stone buildings with interesting details and objects placed carefully throughout. The most wonderful thing was the salt water pool which was open for village families to come to swim. It was a wonderful social event and really welcome after an afternoon of the very hot weather Spain is having. The place even had an excellent restaurant with truely amazing food. What a life!

  • 40 km away

    July 13, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Another beautiful day! We are 40 kilometers away from Santiago. Since we have enough time we will continue walking an additional 90 kilometers to the ocean via a town named Muxio.

  • We made it!!

    July 14, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

What a day! We walked all the way to Santiago today-40 kilometers (almost a marathon)!
I am really impressed. I thought that since we are walking into a bigger city it would be ugly , but the entire way was very beautiful. We walked through small woods, past rolling hills, past villages, past other pilgrims. ..At the edge of town is a huge albergue with 400 beds that many pilgrims stay at. It's an ancient monastery building. We decided to do this in our style because the big phrase on the Camino is, "It's your Camino". We are staying in a luxury hotel at the top of the hill on the edge of town. It has a wonderful pool and excellent food; both very welcome after walking in 97 degree sunshine all day. Buen Camino!
P.S. You know you are on the Camino when a rooster comes out of a hedge and you don't think anything of it, when a large cow with horns brushes past you and you , at first think nothing of it, then think, "wow, that was large", and when you notice that people speaking in all languages possible are just so happy to be taking time away from their rushed, hectic lives. We are, after all, so very much the same.

  • On to Finisterre and Muxio

    July 15, 2015 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

We had a wonderful day in Santiago. What a nice city! Another day of great food, interesting places, excellent street musicians, and nice people. We are staying in a very nice hostel. It's amazing how nice these places are! Tomorrow we will walk to Finisterre via Muxio. Back in the day Finisterre was considered the end of the world and people go there now to finish the Camino. The beaches are said to be lovely. Since we have the time we will walk there and ride a bus back. It's 128 kilometers. When we return Santiago will be having a festival.Read more
