  • Sunset at the"end of the World"

    July 23, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The Camino tradition is to finish in Santiago and then go to Finisterre, either by bus or walking, to watch the sun set into the most western spot in Spain. We really enjoyed this last part of our hike because it was true to the Camino spirit which we encountered throughout the journey. The Camino is way more than a long hike. It is a journey that is really about people. It's an amazing journey filled with incredible people, incredible stories, and incredible acts of kindness, love, and sharing.
Last night we enjoyed this beautiful sunset with other pilgrims spread silently throughout the beach. It's just one of those moments in life.

Tonight we ate as a group with the people in our albergue. One of the men is an excellent chef! What a wonderful treat! We all shopped for food together beforehand which was a treat in itself. The selection of fish is immense here and the fishmonger will fillet the fish to your liking on the spot. What a wonderful meal!Read more

  • Inside the Guggenheim

    July 27, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

On the first floor of the museum there is a large group of sculptures created by Richard Serra. Walking through these pieces was amazing. At times it reminded me of the small Spanish villages we walked through on the Camino with their red clay buildings and sometimes narrow, winding streets. They were very beautiful; an experience that was both personal and interactive at the same time, much like the Chicago "Bean" sculpture is. It is an artwork that is an experience. The top floor has a show by Jean-Michel Basquiat show which was also very powerful in a raw, intuitive, and intellectual manner. I can't say much for the Jeff Koons show. The museum itself was a wonderful experience to wander through.Read more

Wonderful Mediterranean beach town-this amazing town is only 35 miles from Barcelona and can be reached by train in 30 minutes. It's all of Door County rolled into one nice town on the ocean. Sweet!

The architecture here is amazing! There are beautiful details everywhere! This is Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a hospital built in the 19th century. The architect believed in the therapeutic value of light beauty. There are gardens throughout so patients could go outside, and the buildings feature natural lighting and beautiful design elements. The World Health Organization has an office there and it is being renovated and is open to the public. This is a very peaceful place in a otherwise busy city.Read more

La Sagrada Familia , considered Gaudi's masterpiece, was started in 1883 and is still being built today. It is one of those places that is so beautiful from so many different angles that it is overwhelming to take it all in. It is a constant play of light, shape, and color. I find it amazing to think of Gaudi's vision.Read more

  • Barcelona at night

    August 8, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Three nights each week the city has a musical light show at the Font Magica. The Palau Nacional is an art museum with beautiful fountains starting at the top and continuing down the large hill in multiple layers. About midway there is as large fountain which they light up in several colors and dance the water to different songs. The place fills up with people, but there is plenty of room. What is not to love!Read more
