34. Stop: Waitomo Glowworm Cave

Als nächstes besuchten wir ein von Jessica lang erwartetes Highlight in Neuseeland: die Waitomo Glühwürmchenhöhlen.
Wir übernachteten bei einem Hostel mit supersüßem Hund (George) und waren erst sehr geschockt und enttäuascht, als wir feststellten, dass online alles schon komplett ausverkauft war. Uns war nicht klar gewesen, dass dies ähnlich beliebt und entsprechend ausgebucht sein würde wie Hobbiton.
Dennoch wollten wir es vor Ort nochmal probieren. Vielleicht gab es ja spontane Absagen. Direkt gegenüber vom Hostel war ein Verkaufsbüro und auch da stand auf dem Schild bei jeder Tour "sold out for today" - doch wir hatten Glück und bekamen ziemlich problemlos noch 2 Tickets sogar zeitnah für eine Tour eine Stunde später.

Während der Führung waren leider bis zum Schluss keine Fotos erlaubt, aber das tat der Erfahrung keinen Abbruch. Wir erfuhren, dass die Höhlen wieder in Besitz einer sehr weit verzweigten Maorifamilie ist, welche sich quasi als Familienbetrieb um die Höhlen kümmert und alles betreibt.
Als erstes wurden wir dann in ein 2km langes, klassisches Höhlensystem geführt. In einer besonders großen Höhle erzählte unser Tourguide, dass dort aufgrund der tollen Akustik auch oft Konzerte stattfinden. Halb im Scherz fragte er dann, ob es jemanden in der Gruppe geben würde, der oder die die Akustik mal mit einer kleinen Gesangseinlage ausprobieren wollte. Er schaltete sogar das Licht aus, damit die Person nicht schüchtern sein müsse. Und tatsächlich sang dann schließlich eine andere Touristin auf Maori. Wirklich ein besonderer Moment!
Danach bekamen wir dann die Glühwürmchen zu sehen, welche die Höhlendecke wie einen Sternenhimmel beleuchteten, während wir auf einem Boot geräuschlos auf den unterirdisch fließenden Waitomo durch die dunkle Höhle glitten. Wir waren absolut fasziniert! 🤩🤩

Next we visited a highlight Jessica had been waiting for a long time since coming to New Zealand: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
We stayed at a hostel with a super cute dog (George) and were very shocked and disappointed when we found that everything was already completely sold out online. We hadn't realized that this would be as popular and fully booked as Hobbiton.
But we still wanted to try it directly on site. Maybe there would be spontaneous cancellations. There was a sales office directly opposite the hostel and the sign for every tour there said "sold out for today" - but we were lucky and got 2 tickets pretty easily, even for a tour an hour later.

Unfortunately, no photos were allowed during the tour until the end, but that didn't spoil the experience. We learned that the caves have been given back to the descendants of the (and very big) Maori, who discovered the cave. They now look after the caves and run everything as a family business (in collaboration with the state).
First, we were led into a 2km long, classic cave system. In a particularly large cave (Cathedral Cave), our tour guide told us that they often host concerts there because of the great acoustics. Half joking, he then asked if there was anyone in the group who wanted to try out the acoustics with a little singing performance. He even turned off the lights so that the person wouldn't be shy. And really, another tourist ended up singing in Maori. A truly special moment!
After that, we got to see the glowworms, which lit up the cave ceiling like a night sky full of stars, while we glided silently through the dark cave on a boat on the underground Waitomo River. We were absolutely fascinated! 🤩🤩Read more
