This phone booth is a limited edition with double doors. But it's not a coin phone anymore - it's a card phone 😳😳😳 Still working and with modern technology...
Locals say this is the last sign of civilisation before you drive over the bridge to the remote island of Great Bernera.Read more

  • Bridge over the ocean

    July 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Today we didn't take the ferry but the bridge over the ocean, as the Bernera Bridge is also called.

Not impressive in length, but nevertheless very important:
Great Bernera is separated from Lewis by a narrow strait. Until the bridge was erected, the only way to reach Great Bernera was by boat. An on-demand ferry crossed the water, carrying everything from lorries to livestock. When cattle had to be moved from one bank to the other, they had to make the crossing by swimming behind the ferry.
The ferry was frequently unable to run due to the strong currents that ran through the strait, or in times of high winds, which are frequent in the region. Therefore in 1953 a bridge was built. 2021 they opened a new bridge because the old one showed structural problems.

Close by there are even standing stones and nice views over Loch Barraglom.

  • Idyllic

    July 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

If you think of the Isle of Lewis to be idyllic - in comparison with Great Bernera it's NYC downtown...
There's a lovely rural atmosphere on that little island.

  • High Tide Bell

    July 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

On the pristine Bosta Beach, which has links with the Iron Age, the Vikings and the Highland Clearances, was an Iron Age house found after a storm, buried under the sand.
In 2010, Bosta Beach was chosen to take part in Marcus Vergette’s unique data recording project. The Time and Tide Bell is a permanent installation of 12 bells around the UK which ring when the sea is at high tide. They say it'll also become an indication for the climate change, when the water level is rising and the bell will ring more often.Read more

  • Oldy but goldy plus vegan

    July 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

As I mentioned before, the charging situation in Lewis is not the greatest. But somehow as more remote as more charging options... We've found a very old fashioned but rather fast charging option in Great Bernera. With lovely tearoom and picnic tables adjacent.
They had extremely yummy vegan muffins and a vegan soup. After all - charging was almost too fast for our liking, we loved to stay there.

  • The Stacks

    July 21, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Garry Beach in the North West of Lewis is a real spectacle.
During low tide you can walk between amazing sea stacks and explore sea caves. But be aware of the tide - from mid tide the water is coming in with full power and within minutes the beach is a swirling sea. Easy to get trapped.Read more

  • Lost Beauty

    July 22, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

This lovely cottage with direct loch access is a lost place. And I wonder what happened. It's in a beautiful location, why did nobody want to take care of it?!?
It already has electricity, it must have been abandoned in the 70s or so. Still there's the beauty seen in decay...Read more

  • What a story

    July 23, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

    This is the Scarista Bus.
And yes, it looks derelict and ramshackled.
But what a lovely story - unfortunately without a happy ending. And here we go:
A mysterious, weather-beaten bus lies on one of the most beautiful beaches.
In January 2005, when a storm battered the coastline, the winds destroyed a caravan used by the local Western Isles Scouts groups for weekend adventures. A year later the Scouts were donated an old bus to replace their caravan. This was diligently converted into a habitable living space, a new and improved clubhouse. A cooker and kitchen area were installed, communal seating added, even a small bathroom placed where the driver’s cabin used to be. A perfect new base for exploration and overnight stays. It’s not hard to imagine it being a well-maintained hive of activity, full of raucous noise and laughter. All a far cry from the muted scenes of disrepair and decay which greet the explorer today.
But maybe someone will hear the cry for help and will restore it again?!? In Harris you never know...

  • Connecting

    July 25, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This morning was all about connecting with the Isle of Lewis.
I tried to tell the story of what I feel: an island between decay and beauty. Between past and future. A vast landscape but no loneliness. Serene but rough. Sinister but enchanting. An island full of contradictions.
I took the car and just went with the flow, stopping every other minute. This and the next posts will show the results.
