    Day 9

    Elephants

    Über Elefanten haben wir gelernt, dass sie sich 18 Stunden täglich fressend durch den Busch bewegen und 200l Wasser am Tag brauchen. Sie haben ein schlechtes Verdauungssystem und können nur 40% der aufgenommenen Nahrung verwerten.
    6x, etwa alle 10 Jahre, bekommen sie neue Zähne.
    Es ist wichtig, ihre Komfortzone nicht zu verletzen, sie beobachten ihre Umgebung ganz genau, manchmal täuschen sie vor, zu fressen. Als der zu fressen vortäuschende Elefant auf uns zukam, wäre es ein Fehler gewesen, zurückzuweichen, da er sich dann als der Stärkere gefühlt hätte. Also fuhr unser Ranger voll auf ihn zu und an ihm vorbei, um gleiche Größe zu demonstrieren.
    Häufig handelt es sich um Jungtiere, die im Alter von 15 Jahren von der Herde ausgeschlossen werden, um Inzucht zu vermeiden.    Read more

    Day 16

    Day 16 - Okavango Delta

    April 16 in Botswana ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

    An early morning rise (yes, again), but this time, we are off on Safari. Another beautiful morning in Botswana, the weather has been perfect. Cool nights, warm days.
    We spent 5 hours observing everything from elephants, zebras, Kudos, Lechwe's, impalas, Baboons, and varieties of bird life, but unfortunately, no Lions or cheaters. Bit of a bummer. Nonetheless, it was a good morning. I have more and better photos on my SLR Canon. I will try to transfer them to my phone and upload them.
    In the afternoon, I chilled, enjoying the tranquillity of the African bush. So good!
    Today is back to the grind of a long day on the bus to our next camp destination.
    I have loved my time in the Delta. It's an absolute must to in Botswana.    Read more

    Day 8

    Daily routine

    April 16 in Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

    Geweckt werden wir um 5.15, Frühstück an der Feuerstelle ist um 5.45 und um 6.15 startet die Morgen-Safari in den Sonnenaufgang.
    Auf der Suche nach einem geeigneten ‚Coffee-Shop’ können wir schon viele Tiere sehen. Dort angekommen bietet sich die Möglichkeit ‚to pick the flowers‘ für die Mädels oder ‚to check the tyre‘ für die Jungs 😉 und weiter geht meist zurück zur Lodge, wo uns ein üppiger Brunch erwartet und eine lange Siesta.
    Um 16.00 folgt dann der High-Tea und um 16.30 geht’s wieder los, diesmal in den Sonnenuntergang hinein. Dabei darf natürlich der Sundowner nicht fehlen, es ist alles an Bord, Whisky, Gin-Tonic, Bier mit oder ohne Alkohol usw.
    Durchgeschüttelt zurück in der Lodge wird dann erstmal der Pre-Dinner-Drink und anschließend das Abendessen serviert.    Read more

    Day 15

    Day 15 - Muan to the Okavango Delta

    April 15 in Botswana ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

    After a good night's sleep and, finally, a relaxed morning, we set off for the Okavango Delta. Instead of usual bus, we jump into Safari fitted out Landcruisers. The Delta is a massive area and a world heritage site. You can see why! We will spend 2 nights in the Delta and exploring its waterways and, of course, the wildlife.
    We weren't disappointed. Our drive into the Delta was remarkable. First, we see this massive elephant on the side of the road, then a family of Warthogs running across the road. Then giraffes, Impala's. This time, they we up close, one Elephant was onle 5 metres from our vehicle. To say I was a little nervous would be an understatement.
    In the evening, we did a canoe trip down a waterway and came across hippopotamuses. They were huge. Once again, we got reasonably close. It was an awesome experience. We finally made it to camp through a series of rough, tight, sandy 4x4 tracks.
    The camp is in the park and isn't protected. That means wildlife can roam through the camp should they choose to.
    I love this camp, finally in the bush with wildlife. The camp had a huge canopy that sheltered us from a late evening African thunderstorm. The lightning show was a site to behold. After a yummy dinner, I went to sleep with thunder in the background. Perfect. In the middle of the night, I'm woken by animal noises, I have no idea what they were. It sounded magic. I stayed awake just to listen. This is what loving this. What an amazing camp. Tomorrow morning, we get up at 5.30 AM to do a Safari.    Read more

    Day 14 - Exit Namibia, enter Botswana

    Another marathon day in the bloody bus. We left Namibia and entered Botswana. The roads for the first 200 km were appalling. It was slow going. After 10 hours travelling, we finally make camp at Maun, near the Okavango Delta. This is a unique place in Africa where the Okavango River flows in land and splits into various arms and comes to an end. Many animal species reside here. Tomorrow, we will do a Safari and stay in the Delta.

    Kaziikini Schutzgebiet Safari-Abenteuer

    Alle haben die Nacht überlebt. Die 5 Liter Klo-Lösung wurde tatsächlich benutzt. Nein, nicht von mir.

    Auf den offenen Safari-Fahrzeugen von gestern - mit Driver Robbie - ruckeln wir uns durch die Wildnis.
    Ich sitze neben Lara - aus der Ukraine. Lara ist seit 21 Jahren in Deutschland und eine Lady. Immer sieht sie aus, wie gepellt aus Ei - auch wenn Strom iest weg oder aus ist Wasser. Kleid, Strohhut und eine große Fürsorge, welche sich auch auf uns alle erstreckt, sind ihr Markenzeichen. Ihr Gatte Roland wird deutlich strenger abgewatscht.

    Hinter mir sitzen Steffie, Guide Stephan und Claudia. Pirschfahrt? Leise? Ja - möglich wäre das schon, aber warum? Nicht nur Stephan bluten die Ohren von dem Geschnatter und wir wissen jetzt alles - alles! Nebenbei stelle ich Steffie in einer Nasenbluten-Gesprächspause ihre Kamera ein. Das Nasenbluten kommt von der extrem trockenen Luft - nicht von einer manuellen Anwendung.

    Trotz unserer Laustärke treffen wir auf Warzenschweine, Elefanten - im lebenden und im toten Zustand, DikDik's, Geier, Marabus, Adler und Löwen. Das weibliche Löwinnen Trio war erfolgreich bei der Jagd - muss jetzt aber die Kadaver gegen die Aßfresser verteidigen - schon wegen des im Busch verstecken Löwen-Baby Quartetts. Niedlich trifft es nicht im Ansatz.    Read more

    Santawani Consession Botswana day 2

    We have 3 safari drives left. One today at 4:30 & 2 tomorrow. We have seen just about every notable big game animals to see. Our last one that has eluded us, until today, was the hyena. While on the drive, off to the left, about 100 meters, one of our fellow guests spotted movement in the brush. A hyena!

    Our game guide /driver sped off across the land in hot pursuit. (while in a “Park” they are not allowed to stray off the approved roads). Since this area is leased from the local villagers, it is considered a concession and the rules don’t prohibit driving off a road.

    We began following the hyena and came across a clan. See the pics.

    The prize video of, maybe the whole safari, is of the 2 zebras fighting. One clearly was the aggressor and the other wasn’t as driven to keep the fight going. We were off 100+ meters so we couldn’t hear their fighting noises. Nonetheless, it shows a glimpse into the harsh life of wild animals in their native lands.    Read more

    Jours 1 & 2 : Moremi - camp 2nd bridge

    Démarrage du safari : Accueil à l'aéroport par notre guide, après une collation, départ par la route en direction Réserve de Moremi et la région de Xakanaxa / 3rd bridge que nous atteindrons dans l'après-midi. Nous ferons nos premières observations animales avant d'arriver au camp de brousse 2nd bridge - Moremi Game Reserve & Okavango Delta.

    Jour 2;: Après le petit déjeuner, nous partirons en safari (game drive); nous explorerons cette région riche en faune. Nous apprécierons la splendeur du Delta de l'Okavango. La réserve de Morémi offre un écosystème tout à fait unique compte tenu qu'elle est directement liée au Delta de l'Okavango et son niveau d'eau. Ce delta est unique au monde puiîsqu'il est le seul à ne pas se déverser en mer, mais dans le désert, ce qui explique son côté unique et extraordinaire. La faune y est riche et diversifiée. Nous passerons une seconde nuit dans ce lieu.

    Makadigkadi Park

    Hot on the road, straight away 2 elephants a good sign until one walked towards the road as I approached. Didn't stop for photos. Zebras up next then nothing for ages. Plenty of sign of elephants removing water pipe covers to get into the water pipes. I'd been warned many times and yesterday about the elephants so was on high alert. Apart from a solitary gazelle that was it for the morning. It took another 5 hours before my next encounter. Dumbo was grazing the tree from the shade, in the heat of the day. About 5 m from the road. As I approached on the opposite side he swivelled and eyed me up. Once again an approaching car distracted him. Snapped a few shots but no NatGeo for them.Read more
