    End of an era

    March 27, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

The last few days in London after leeds were a little sombre, it had dawned on us that we were officially splitting up and it was definitely a bit of a bummer to be saying goodbye after such an amazing year of adventures.
Yesterday we went to check out all the monopoly places we'd seen stops for on the tube but hadn't visited yet. We went to Trafalgar square, piccadilly circus (it's just a square not an actual circus), bond street and Leicester square, plus covent gardens but that's not in monopoly. It was a rainy but fun explore. For the evening we went out for one last trip to the pub with Sam, we played pool and drank guinness but didn't stay out too late because I had to go home and pack.

This year has been the best ever and I'm so grateful spencer decided to join me. I just had a little scroll through some of my old posts on here and its honestly unreal how many amazing things we got to do and see. Spencer was a perfect travel partner and I'm going to miss him very much. I can't wait to be able to look back and talk about our euro adventures for years to come :)

    Xmas & New Year’s 2023

    December 24, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

We spent Xmas and New Year’s with my stepdaughter near London. She’s an amazing cook and spoiled us rotten with an array of tasty meals, including: pheasant and chestnut stew, clementine cake, juniper and lemon ice cream, cranberry ice cream, and much more!

She lives by the Thames, so we also enjoyed strolls along the waterfron, as well as the occasional stop at the riverside pub, where we enjoyed half pints of pear cider and a proper plate of fish ‘n’ chips with mushy peas.

I enjoy visiting grocery stores around the world, and England is no exception. I get a kick out of their cough medicine for example, Thanks to the descriptions, dry and tickly vs chesty, you know exactly which type is right for you.

Naomi and I rang in the New Year on our own, alas, because Larry had to fly back to the states. Why? Because his passport ran out of space for new stamps!

Up ‘til 2016, this would have been no big deal. Back then, you could simply get more pages stapled into your existing passport . These days, you are required to get a brand new passport.

As you can imagine, getting one on such short notice was tricky. I’ll spare the details, but he managed to get an in person appointment in Dallas.

The upside to all this, is that he got to ring in the new year with our Texas family, so all was not lost.

He also dropped off a large suitcase of souvenirs and superfluous clothing at our house. This means we are down to one big suitcase and two roller bags.

He put one of the roller bags into an empty big bag, so we’ve got plenty of room for souvenirs now.

I must say that with each trip we take, we get better at packing.

It had been roughly 20 years since my stepdaughter and I shared the holidays together, so this was a real treat.

As always, our time together flew by and saying goodbye was hard. Still, I am very grateful for the time we spent together.

  • Day 40

    10th December

    December 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    Esher
Temperature: 8 degrees at 7.30 am and a high of 12 degrees at 3 pm.

I'm still not feeling the best today, but I am on the mend.
Michael and I went for our normal morning walk this morning at 7.30 am, a very pleasant morning, not cold at all. I never tire of looking at the old houses.
We went out to a local pub for a traditional Sunday roast. We are still not used to dogs in pubs, especially around food. But they were all well behaved.
We took Sue, her son Michael and his wife Jo. Sue's Michael and I had lamb, Sue had Turkey, and my My Michael and Jo had the Beef.
Had an enjoyable couple of hours together, then when we came back, I went and had a lie down. Had a lovely snooze, and when I woke up, I felt a huge change with my cold. The corner has turned, hurray!!! Roll on tomorrow.
Applewood cheese, onion and chutney toasted sandwich for dinner.

  • Day 15

    15th November

    November 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

    Esher/London
Temperature; 8 degrees this morning and with a high of 12 degrees.
Michael and I trained in Waterloo, and then went off to Greenwich while I spent the day walking the streets of London. Even though the sun was out, there was no sun on the streets, and there was a chilly breeze. I had to run back to meet Michael at Waterloo Station in time to catch the train back to Sue's. We both had a great day out doing our own thing.
I loved just looking at all the buildings and people watching.

    November 12, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

    Esher
Temperature: 5 degrees this morning and with a high of 9 degrees.
Thank goodness it was nowhere near as cold this morning, but it has been an overcast miserable day. I guess yesterday's chill gave us an idea of what it's going to be like when we go on our trip to the Christmas Markets in Europe. Sue and I went for a walk after taking Michael to the train station to catch a train to London for the Rememberance Day March. Spent the rest of the day watching the parade on TV and knitting another pair of socks, nothing else to do.
There is a storm coming, so we won't be going anywhere in the next couple of days.

    Beautiful autumn day.
We had a lovely time out today. It took us just over an hour to get to Sussex to Weald and Download Living Museum. This is where the film The Repair Shop is filmed. The living museum is a huge place, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Loved the ride through the countryside and all the villages.
All the photos are from the museum today.

Temperature: 7 degrees this morning with a high of 9 degrees.
Caught the train up to London this morning.
Spent 2.5 hours at Churchill Bunker, what an amazing place. Because it was so cold, we headed back to Waterloo Station, where we had lunch at Costa. After lunch, we managed to find out all the information for our other travels coming up, and where Michael catches the train on Sunday for the Rememberance Parade.
We caught the train back to Esher, and by the time we arrived 3pm, the street lights were on.
While in London today, we noticed a large number of police around on foot and horseback. The streets already have barricades up in place for Sunday for the Rememberance march.

Went for pur walk early to beat the rain, and luckily enough, the rain only started when we were nearly back. 8 degrees might not sound that cold, but it felt like ice.
Grocery shopping today at Sainsbury's before going to Garsons for lunch to celebrate Sue's birthday.
Tonight went out to a Chinese place in Esher for dinner with Sue's son and wife, Jo.
All the photos are from Garsons Farm Shop, this is a 5 minute walk from Sue's.

It was a wet, cold, miserable day, but we still went out for an hours walk in the morning. Went through a few private roads where there we some huge houses, sorry didn't take my phone, too wet.
Went to Claygate another pretty village to see the Rememberance decoration on top of the postbox, gorgeous.
This afternoon, we went round to Sue's friend Ann for a knitting session and a cuppa.
The photos today are from the village at Claygate.

What a beautiful fine day, just the breeze a bit chilly. We were able to have a decent long walk today. The footpaths are thick with the autumn leaves.Spent the rest of the day, pottering around the house, Michael did some painting and touch-up jobs for Sue, and I managed to finish one sock.
Went to the local pub to see what it was like.
Sue's son Michael and his wife Jo invited us for roast chicken dinner tonight 😋
