    Bridgnoth 🇬🇧

    July 23, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Birmingham — Brindley Place

    March 30, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

I’m sure Birmingham is studied by city planners the world over for its revitalized city center. The canal network that carried coal and iron during the Industrial Revolution made it England’s second city. However, these canals were made obsolete in the mid-20th century, and Birmingham was left with abandoned factories, warehouses, towpaths, and waterways that cut right through the heart of the city. In the 70s and 80s the city revitalized it all by building public spaces that drew people back to the canal paths — theaters, a symphony hall, an arena, an aquarium, amusement parks, shopping centers, restaurants, and boutiques. And it seems to have worked quite well. The canals are a vital part of the city’s pedestrian pathways. My favorite part is close to my apartment where the canal system goes above the city streets and boats cross bridges over the traffic below. Another highlight was the Black Sabbath Bridge where they have a camera set up for you to capture a photo on the bench next to Ozzy and the band (all famous Brummies). I also spent some time canal-side at a bakery cafe and later found the best Neapolitan pizza in the UK. I spoke to an Italian bloke there who gave me the sad news that Italians in England do not make “pizza gain” for Easter, so I won’t be having my favorite Easter pie this year. The good news is that Cadbury World is here in Birmingham farther down along the canal where the company began in 1824. I’ll be going there on Easter Monday. Chocolate is a great revitalizing force.Read more

    A murder!

    December 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

This morning we said farewell to our beautiful gatehouse, and headed towards Derby.

We wandered around Derby shopping mall for a while, stopping for a Popeyes lunch (which we loved in Hawaii, Phill believes it to be as good here too).

We then checked into our accommodation at Risley Hall which is a Manor house. Apparently this Manor has a big secret, it was the site of a murder!

Atleast that was the premise of our dinner, thanks to Tony and Michelle we are staying the night here solving a murder mystery over a 3 course meal!

The food was good, and although 2 murders were committed the evening was high in spirits. We helped the local detective, we decided it was infact not Jack the Ripper, it was Lady Alexandra! And out of 40 people Phill and I received the Super Sleuth award! So thanks Michelle for slipping them a 20 and making us win!

    Ups and downs

    December 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

This morning started with a bad coffee and a walk around the Jewelry Quarter of Birmingham, while there were quite a few jewelry stores, the name is a lot fancier than the area actually is, at least the parts that we saw.

After this, we walked into the centre of the city, where there was the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany itself. It was pretty impressive though we didn't stop to buy anything. After a better coffee, we spent the afternoon walking around the shopping district.

On the way back we stopped for a snack and to pick up another meal deal from the supermarket and headed back to the accommodation to ruin our evening by watching the saddest Pixar movie: Up!

    It was a great movie.

    Cooking at Lilly's

    November 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

    Deutscher Text siehe unten!

"Today, we had initially planned to cook dinner in Sandra and Charles's kitchen. However, our offer was vehemently declined with the explanation that we were guests and not allowed to be hosts. Alright, someone else will have to endure our cooking, and that someone is, of course, our dear Lilly. She enthusiastically accepts our invitation. Good girl!

In the nearby Tesco hypermarket, we buy everything we need for cooking in the afternoon: broccoli, potatoes, green beans, carrots, cream, cloves, bay leaves, white vinegar, ready-made crumble, cooking apples, and vegetarian schnitzels with mozzarella pesto filling. We've already acquired a small red cabbage yesterday, and some ingredients, such as onions and balsamic cream, are still in the camper's pantry.

Our appointment with Lilly is set for 5 PM. We manage to finish the shopping early and head straight to Dudley. Loaded with groceries and an electric heater, accompanied by the dogs, we stand in front of Lilly's door. The mullion windows of her apartment are invitingly lit. There are three doorbells without names. As Lilly lives on the first floor, we try the middle bell. No reaction. So, we try the lower one, but that also leads to nothing. Finally, we call Lilly, and she comes down to let us in. That's how it is here. There's no intercom, and, of course, you can't just let anyone in who rings the doorbell.

Because we're all hungry, we get to work immediately. Lilly's kitchen countertop runs along the entire outer wall of the living room, giving us plenty of space. Lilly puts on some light RnB music, and together and in high spirits, we prepare a fine meal from the ingredients we brought. There's potato gratin, colorful vegetable pan, and vegetarian schnitzels. Oh yes, I almost forgot the red cabbage. We cooked it, but due to the long cooking time, we didn't eat it. So Lilly has a side dish for her dinner tomorrow.

Everything goes as planned, nothing burns, and after the joyful cooking, a lavish, appetizing meal is on Lilly's small dining table. Before we dive in, we pop the apple crumble into the oven. No feast without dessert! What can I say? Sometimes self-praise is totally justified! There's a lot of food, and we devour it all. The dogs eagerly lick the empty bowls, and Lilly is happy that she got the treat of being cooked for. What a lovely evening!"

Keine Reaktion.
Kein Festmahl ohne Nachtisch! Was soll ich sagen?

    Sunday Roast at Joyce's

    May 12, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    (Deutscher Text siehe unten)

I was so looking forward to this afternoon with Joyce! She is such a wonderful, warm, and funny person. And she can cook! She proved that again this time. After a warm welcome, I unfortunately had to go to the bathroom very quickly and throw up. But that had nothing to do with Joyce, I was already feeling sick on the way to her place. Whatever it was, after I got rid of it, I was able to fully enjoy the food.

Joyce served us roast beef with baked potatoes, chicken with rice and peas, and mixed vegetables. Although I usually eat little meat, I really tucked in. Thank you, Joyce, for your effort and your hospitality!

But of course, it's not just the food that did us good. It's above all this open, hospitable, family atmosphere that simply touches the heart.

I'm already looking forward to the next time!

    Birmingham Art Museum

    April 3, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Pre-Raphaelites were like the hippies or beatniks of the Victorian Era. They formed in Birmingham in the mid-1800s and challenged the status quo of the art world at the time. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was highlighted here, as was Edward Burne-Jones. I’d like to learn more about those two. William Morris is probably the most famous artist who was part of their group, and his art was influenced by their ideas for decades to come. I found this fitting because Birmingham is not like other British cities. It sprung up almost entirely due to the Industrial Revolution so it doesn’t have the long history of other British cities. It saw overnight growth, incredible fortunes made, and a growing population of working poor. Its history feels more American.Read more

    Birmingham — Bourneville

    April 1, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

I took a walk along the canal to the University of Birmingham and then to Cadbury World. It was a beautiful day. It really felt like spring. Cadbury World was interesting, entertaining, and an exercise in patience all at once. Chocolate rewards made the lines bearable. It’s a neat story though — a family business that seems to have been ahead of its time in terms of the treatment of workers. They built a beautiful neighborhood around the factory which today is a very affluent area of Birmingham.Read more

    When sickness strikes

    December 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

This morning Bec awoke with a head cold, while we didn't plan to do much today other than lounge about in our gatehouse, but we were going to explore the grounds, which we did a little.

Along with all of the other buildings there is St Michael's Church, which is a 12th century Norman church. While we weren't able to go in, it still looked really cool!

Once the wind picked up, we got Bec back inside and lit a fire. Eventually we made another (smaller) charcuterie board and just relaxed in the warmth.

    A day of travel

    December 10, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

We said fair well to our castle accommodation this morning and set out towards Manchester, where we had a bit of a walk around and lunch before heading the rest of the way to Birmingham.

We made a little detour to Walsall and stopped to see the house Bec's mum lived in when she was a child!

We got to Birmingham and parked in a questionable car park before checking in to our high tech hotel, no key cards here! Just use your phone to call the elevator, unlock the door and control the lights.

We headed out for a quick walk, grabbed a meal deal (sandwich, chips and soda) for dinner and headed back to watch a Christmas movie.

All in all it was a pretty quiet day because there was quite a bit of travel involved, but at least we managed to hit our step goal again!
