    Obrigado Portugal

    Yesterday in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We say goodbye to Portugal and to our wonderful Camino adventure. Today we felt like tourists, lightly dressed and without our faithful companions...backpacks and walking poles😁
We may not have walked as many k today ( only 14 😁) but we have made up for any mileage lack by climbing hundreds of stairs and walking up some incredibly steep streets and alleys. Much of it while schlepping bottles of olive oil that we are bringing back home. Have I mentioned that I am practically drinking the stuff🤣?
Our afternoon was spent at the Livraria Lello. It is made famous by the belief that it is where JK Rowling modeled Harry Potter scenes. She denies it, but the argument remain persuasive.
Enjoy the pics. It's been an excellent end to an amazing experience 💗

Porto Day 1 - all the stairs + börds

    May 13 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

New adventure - Porto welcome 🇵🇹

    May 12 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Mein erster Gedanke danach: Oh oh…

    Happy Mother’s Day!

    May 11 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 55 °F

Happy Mother’s Day. I started the day at Mass praying not only for the blessing of my own mom and the gift I have been given to mother 5 wonderful kids, but also for the blessing that the Blessed Mother Mary has been in my life.

This trip is another reminder of the importance of the connection to my spiritual Mother Mary.

After Mass, I connected with a dear friend and Porto native Alex Portugal and his 9-year old daughter Maria.

We went to a local craft market, visited the Porto Cathedral where many pilgrims begin their Camino.

Went to Gaia to an oceanfront restaurant for lunch. Then we picked up Becky and toured the rest of the beaches and city. Alex and his daughter were excellent tour guides!

We returned early evening and started packing for tomorrow’s departure.

Today was a bittersweet day. It was a gorgeous day in Porto and also the first time being away from my family on Mother’s Day. 🥲

    Day for Dreams & Miracles

    May 9 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

On this beautiful Friday, we awoke very early to head out on a day of travel from Lisbon to Porto.

We arranged a private car with three stops in three different cities. We chose Santarem, Fatima, and Aveiro - each for different reasons and experiences. We had originally wanted to go to Nazare, known for its hugh waves, but our driver said we missed the high season. Our driver Nayem from Bangledesh was very encouraging of us going to our first two spiritual destinations.

We arrived in Santarem in an hour to a small-sized church called the Church of the Holy Miracle or originally, St. Stephen. There was a Mass being held for a group of Filipino pilgrims. We were able to participate and afterwards were directed to go off to the side of the altar up some stairs that took us to an amazing sight…a consecrated host of bread which had started to bleed and turn into flesh back in the 12th century. For those who are skeptical, this host has been scientifically tested and confirmed to contain human flesh and blood. Inconceivable, yet, truly amazing!

After we came back to the car, our driver started asking questions about our experience. He was not Catholic, but was intrigued. He asked if we would pray for him and his wife who had been trying to conceive a child for 11 years. We assured him we would.

Our next stop was Fatima. John and I had visited the site several years ago. However, Becky had never been and had always wanted to go. We had decided early on that if we were both physically able to go on this Camino trip that we would make a stop and thank the Blessed Mother for her guidance and protection.

With prayer intentions in hand, we headed to the original church built in Fatima to commemorate Mary’s miraculous appearance in 1917.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared in Fátima, Portugal, specifically in a field called Cova da Iria, near Fátima. The apparitions occurred between May and October 1917.

A crowd, estimated at about 70,000, gathered at Fátima, Portugal, on October 13, 1917 and witnessed what has been described as a miraculous solar phenomenon, in which the Sun appeared to fall toward Earth—sometimes called the Miracle of the Sun—immediately after her final appearance to the children.

We had a beautiful sacramental afternoon praying at multiple places Mary had appeared and seeing the homes and tombs of the 3 children. It was very special to share this with Becky and see one of her dreams come true.

Next stop was Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal. Very picturesque.

We arrived in Porto about 5:30 and were exhausted! We totally needed to rest and regroup. We are staying in the heart of town. Live music just below us. Love the vibrancy of this city.

After a long and well-needed rest, we resurrected and I got to show Becky an amazing place to watch the sunset - The Yeatman.

Looking forward to drinking Port, exploring the city more, and seeing our good friend Alex…whose last name is Portugal!

    First stop in Porto

    May 9 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

I finally arrived at the Sandman. My phone battery died right before I got here. Luckily I saw the sign above the roof. I was able to follow that. Had my first shower after not bathing for almost 3 days. Amazing.
Off to check out the town. I’ve had about four hours. Sleep in the past two nights. Battery is running low.

    Porto

    May 8 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    Porto, Portugual

    May 6 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Porto is a coastal city in northwest Portugal known for its stately bridges and port wine production. In the medieval Ribeira (riverside) district, narrow cobbled streets wind past merchants’ houses and cafes. São Francisco Church is known for its lavish baroque interior with ornate gilded carvings. The palatial 19th-century Palácio de Bolsa, formerly a stock market, was built to impress potential European investors.

We arrived in Porto at about 10:30 having flown from Denver via Newark. After dropping off our luggage at the Hilton hotel near the cathedral, we walked to the cathedral and got the first stamps in our credenciales. Then we walked about three miles to the pier for our river bridge tour, stopping for lunch at BHR Ponte Pensil, a restaurant that hangs over the Douro river. The boat tour was relaxing and beautiful, and our guide was very good and super friendly. We got to taste four different varieties of port during the tour, paired with Lindor truffles. Very tired and jet lagged, we then ubered back to the hotel and pretty much crashed for the night.

Porto - Boat trip & walk to the beach

    May 5 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

With my head still dizzy from the wine, I went on the boat trip I had pre-booked to see Porto from the river Douro.
They couldn't have made it more impersonal since they just played a recorded text that gave us some background information. This plus the soft back and forth rocking of the boat made me almost fall asleep.

In general, I still did not feel a 100% good so I had some lunch and went for a longer walk to the beach afterwards.

    Flourish and Blotts

    May 5 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Arrived with a group of pilgrims into Porto today. There was one person from the Netherlands one person from San Francisco another from Poland someone from Austria, New Zealand, and Ireland so we had many countries represented. I also passed someone else from Spain. Porto is beautiful along the river It’s just a stunning city, but it is big and there are lots of people - a little different from the countryside that I’ve been walking through for the past two weeks after leaving Lisbon. met up with Tammy and her husband, William, and Rachelle for dinner and then went to a wine bar called Scarlet, which has locations in Porto, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.

The walk today was mostly downhill with a few uphill portions, walking and various settings, heavy traffic, old Roman roads forest, and then eventually the suburbs of Porto and then down to the city of Porto.

A famous bookstore called Livraria Lello which is where JK Rowling is said to have been inspired during a 1991, while writing the 1st Harry Potter Novel and is used as its basis for Hogwarts and the wizardly bookstore in the Harry potter universe. . It is so popular now that you have to go online and purchase tickets for the privilege of entering their store, but is well worth the 10 euros.
