    Day 20 - Be present

    April 25 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

“It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up.”—-Eckhart Tolle

Made it from Vairao to Pedra Furada. Last night I had the best sleep on the whole Camino trip so far at the monastery. It was hard to leave such a calm, serene, place…but I must keep moving forward.

The walk today was lovely it went through wooded paths, country roads, and rolling landscapes. Some may ask “what do you think about when walking alone?” The answer is everything and nothing. I try to consciously do more of the nothing because I want to be fully present and take in all the beauty I’m surrounded by.

Took lots of pics and to some of you it may look like more of the same, but I find beauty in each whether it is an old door, a decaying building, or the beautiful countryside. I wonder what lies behind the doors? Who once lived in the decaying buildings, what was their life like, what happened? And so on

Today I ran into Laurent who Arlene and I had met on our second day out of Lisbon. Like Arlene he had met his spouse and friends in Porto to finish the Camino with them. It was nice to meet his family.

Met several pilgrims on the road and when I stopped at a cafe for lunch a pilgrim from Germany came in and asked to sit with me. He spoke very little English, but we managed. He had started in Porto and had just come from the Coastal route. We were then joined by a young girl from the Netherlands. There seems to be quite a number of Dutch walking the Camino

Tonight I am staying at Casa de Maria; a small private room with private bath. It cannot compare to the monastery, but at least it is private. I think for dinner since I had lunch at the cafe that I will just eat the ham and cheese sandwich I bought this morning and go to bed early.

Boa noite e que a paz esteja com você. (Good night and peace be with you)

Day 2 Vilarinho to Barcelos 30.5 km

    April 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Long day on cobblestones! This was a mixed day of walking. Some boring roads, some great views, every so often a little bit of dirt, lots of cafés, and many many cobblestones. It was supposed to rain, but it didn’t. I think the highest the temperature got was about 18 or 19, but to someone who was walking in snow a few days ago, that felt very hot.

Saw lots of people today. Probably a dozen people walked by while I was having coffee in Vilarinho. Leap-frogged with Niko from Holland. And then a few others - Joe and Joan from Ireland, Florence from Hong Kong and her friend Yuning from Taiwan. There were lots of breaks - one for coffee, one for a pesto sandwich, one for some kind of fizzy juice and a salty snack. Beer before coming up to the room.

Part of today felt very rural but even in the small places there were still a lot of cars. When they drive fast on the cobblestones (which is often), it sounds like a jet. I am up for a bit more quiet tomorrow.

Cool little park with found object art display and poems and a rooster, which is a thing for Barcelos.

Lots of draped crosses, which I assume is an Easter thing??? At one church they were putting out palm fronds, and they had not just draped the crosses, but they had also wrapped purple cloth around the outdoor lights too. What’s that about?

Walking into Barcelinos you go under a highway, alongside a big cloverleaf. Something was very wrong. Cars were backed up in every direction not moving. Motorcycle police. People getting out of their cars to look. There must’ve been an accident. The car chaos was something! Hard not to think that walking was the better choice.

I have my annual not terrible blister. I’ll wear sandals tomorrow.

I’m staying in a private room in a house owned by a hotel. It’s almost like an albergue. There is a big shared kitchen. A few people cooked. I went out for excellent tapas and a very good glass of wine instead. Hung out with them for a little while when I got back.

Longer day tomorrow. I’m hoping for a bit of dirt!

    To the monastery!

    April 6, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was a straight 15 km ealk out of Porto. A virtual straight line of boredom. At the end, I reached the Zona Industrial. Yes just as lovely as it sounds. The last 8 km's, were a bit nicer thru some small towns. I was anxious to get to the monesteiro de vairao in Vairao turned albergue, becuase I heard so many good things about it. The volunteer hospitalerio is very nice. Maria another volunteer, took all my clothes and washed and dried them in a machine for me! Beds are a little short tho. My feet are sticking thru openings in the foot board as I write. Anyway some pics from todayRead more

    Day 2 & 5 - Queimada

Queimada: A Galician Ritual On Your Camino

    https://followthecamino.com/en/blog/queimada-th…

Sorry for being so absent! The Camino has been so much to taken, absorb, process while also trying to be present to the Camino Moments and Camino Angels! This post is about Day 2 & Day 5 because on the Camino you keep meeting up with the same people which is so cool and the constant reminder of how special the Camino really is!

Day 2 - Carla...in my photos was the Volunteer at the monastery who on surprise decided to introduce her pilgrams to Queimadra drink which is a traditional Portugues ceromony to ward off evil spirits for a strong Camino! We all had such fun with this and learning from Carla about the history of the Monastery and the drink and a history lessons of Portugal! We all fell in love w/ Carla...as we were leaving (Tuesday day 3) she told us she was starting her Camino on Wednesday!

Tonight (day 5) we arrived at Casa de Fernanda and were so warmly welcomed by Fernanda and fellow pilgrams.....then learning our Dutch friends from the monastery would be arriving to stay as well. The Australian, Michelle had met them the previous night and Michelle stayed where we were last night! The Camino God-Instances are so very real and definitely the spirit of the Camino. And to add to the excitement ...in walks CARLA who has her friend and her Friend Manuel who will be coming from Porto to cook at Fernanada's tonight! We were filled with such joy and excitement!!!!

After dinner....We see Carla preparing the Queimada! She shares her special ritual for the first time in Fernanadas home...,now undrstand Carla, Manuel and Fernanda are all Camino friends and do the Camino many times! Fernandas is special because not all Albugues in Portugal do community dinners and she does them every night! Fernanda's is talked about often on social media ...her love for pilgrams shines through with so much love and passion!!! After some ritual and drinking we then begin singing and playing the guitar...there were Dutch, Brussels, German, Austrailians, Americans and Portuguese at the table singing and dancing together! This is the spirit of the Camino ...tomorrow we all go off and hopefully meet again along the way! It was an extroverts dream come true! Such fun!

I will also share tomorrow about my Day 5 as a witness to the Camino...no phone...no photos..,a total day of being present to each and every moment (seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling and smelling)! Sometime disconnect has to be intentional to truly see the Spirit around us!

Today was such a special day! Oh and another thing Carls shared on Tuesday, "Every Camino is your first Camino because every Camino is different!" I can't wait for my next one! Everyone needs to Camino!!!

    Good Night for now😉😘

    Letzter Wandertag

    May 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Is this the moment where I exit my life?

    May 14, 2021 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

As I walked along kilometers of highly dangerous road today, (the worst so far), I mused at how Ironic it would be if today were the day for me to EXIT my life.
    Gregor enters, I EXIT.
The traffic was so intense and there were so many trucks, that at some stage I stopped thinking, fixed my view on the road ahead and walked, trusting in my angel as trucks drove centimeters past my arm.

Fate obviously has something else in store for me, because I arrived safely at the "Mostiero de Vairao", an ancient pilgrims hostel in a monastery that is hundred of years old.

    Porto

    September 8, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

It was great seeing Ana again who helped me last year when I was in the hospital and called the ambulance. Ana and Dave and I went to her friend's restaurant for dinner. It is maybe 15 feet from the Clerics Tower and serves traditional Portuguese food. Very good and only $10 per person! She has her own photography business and is putting on a huge week long show starting Monday so we were lucky that she had time to meet us. Horrible room last night right on a major street. Between the road construction, the alarm on the pharmacy directly across the street, and the traffic all night on the cobblestone road it was nearly impossible to sleep.Read more

  • Day 33

    Vairao

    October 30, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C
