    May 5, 2023 in Portugal

We have arrived in Portugal. And as if they knew we were coming they put a sign of the camino right here in front of our noses.

  • A morning in Porto

    May 6, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We spent the morning in Bolhão, a part of Porto with a nice market and the famous Confeitaria do Bolhão where we had a nice meeting with friends. Now we left with the bus for Coimbra where we will spend mother's day with Alejandro. We will soon return to Porto when we pass this beautiful city on our camino portugués.Read more

  • Camino miracle in Santa Clara

    May 7, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today we crossed the Mondego river and checked out this monastery of Santa Clara that was built in the 12th century and then later moved because of continuing flooding. It was a very nice experience. And there we experienced another camino miracle: Cley was at the climb up to the new monastery low on energy.. she really wanted to eat something and we didn't bring any snack. When we finally arrived up the hill we entered this beautiful church where the mass had just ended. We sat down Cley between Alejandro and me. And for some inexplicable reason a lady offered Cley her last piece of Merci chocolate while leaving the church. The energy she just needed so much.Read more

  • Procissão das Velas

    May 8, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today we really started our camino. And this day we were confronted with hundreds of and hundreds of pilgrims going the other way. Not like us they are not going to Santiago de Compostela but they all go to Fatima. On the evening of the 12th of May there is the so called Procissão das Velas.. the candle procession. It's held on the evening before the 13th of May which is the day what the virgin Maria appeared for the first time in Fatima.
It's a nice spectacle to see that many people going on a pilgrimage but it has a downside too... how to find lodging in the place you want to go to... So we are now juggling a little bit with where to sleep and where to walk to.. but I think we found a good compromise for the next 2 days. And after that we won't be confronted with big groups of pilgrims no more.

  • Agueda art

    May 9, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Interesting place is this small town Agueda. It's really breathing art. Everywhere there is something to see.
Unfortunately we didn't get to see the famous umbrella sky project because they told us that's only during the hot summer months from July to September. So we have to come back another time. The more we travel the more paces we still need to visit 😀Read more

  • 30k or so.. the hikes get longer

    May 11, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

And so we continue our camino. We are nearing Porto where we started this trip last Friday before we took the bus to Coimbra. And we are getting more and more used to the routine of getting up early and just walk wherever our legs are taking us. Everyday the skies are more blue and the sun gets stronger especially when the hikes are longer and we arrive later. But all goes well. Here is an impression of todayRead more

  • Francesinha 😋 mmmmm

    May 12, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Francesinha is a local delicacy and the place where we are it serves it as one of the best. Food doesn't get much better than this, especially after a long hike.

  • Leaving Porto

    May 13, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Today we left Porto behind and after a long boring part we are now in a more beautiful area. More and more green and lots of beautiful churches.

  • Ponte de Lima to Ponte de Pedreira

    May 16, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today we had the most challenging day so far and probably also the most beautiful day so far. As always we started early to make the most of the cooler temperatures in the morning. And then we went climbing and descending and back up again.
Unfortunately in the few hundred meters I sprained my ankle and that also caused me to fall. Result is a few scratches and a thick ankle. Hopefully I can walk normal again tomorrow. So just taking it a little easy for now.

Today we did the longest hike on this camino so far. About 37 kilometers from O Porriño to Pontevedra. With the climbs, the little villages, the forests and even a pig on the road it truly was a challenging but wonderful hike. Santiago is now only 66km away..Read more
