    April 24 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Day 5 - Craigellachie Circular, Aviemore

    October 30, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Last night was just one night in Aviemore before we headed to Inverness today. Our hostel was clean and nice; however, we had a shared bathroom, which is not always ideal. The pillows were great, but the mattress was not the best.

We got up, had breakfast, and headed out for a hike on the Craigellachie Circular! What a hike it was. We climbed over 307 meters in elevation and then had to make our way down. As usual, we took the path less traveled, and the way down was not the easiest. There were a lot of slips and laughs. We warned everyone to wear their good hiking boots or shoes, but Addy decided to wear her "waterproof" runners. Let's just say that when the mush is deeper than your shoe, your feet do not remain dry!

This has been one of our favorite hikes since we left Canada.

    Tag 28: Aberfeldy to Aviemore

    July 13, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    Was ein Tag heute!

Also musste ich weiter. Also Höhenmeter und Gegenwind.
Heute keiner.
Größtenteils trocken bin ich auch geblieben. Nur ein bisschen nieselregen.

    Inverness and Loch Ness

    May 6 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

We woke at around 6:30 a.m. having had a decent night's sleep. I awoke a few times in the night but the gentle rocking of the train sent me back to sleep.

Somewhere in the middle of the night we split from half of the train. After we had both showered and changed we walked to the next carriage for our breakfast. We had both selected the 'full Scottish' which was served with some decent coffee and orange juice. Meanwhile we took in the fuse of the Highlands as the train slowly trundled along towards Inverness, stopping every so often to allow another train to pass.

The sky was bright blue and we enjoyed taking in the views. The train arrived into Inverness on time at 8:35 a.m. and after disembarking we purchase tickets for the shorts journey to Inverness airport where we were going to pick up a car.

By 9:30 a.m. we were in our hire car and heading towards our first stop Cawdor Castle, northeast of Inverness. We decided not to pay to enter and instead headed back West to Fort George, an 18th century fortification built to suppress the Scots after the Jacobite Rebellion by King George.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the fort and even managed to see some dolphins in the Moray Firth and a seal moseying about just beyond the shore.

From here we drove around the coast to Chanonry Point, supposedly the best place to see dolphins in the world! We were not successful but we did spend a short amount of time taking in the views.

After grabbing a sandwich for lunch and eating it on some picnic benches overlooking the firth, we drove along towards Loch Ness. We stopped near Drumnadrochit, hoping to be able to see Urquhart castle, but as you weren't able to see it from the road we carried on because all of the tickets were sold.

We carried on along the loch until we reached Fort Augustus where the loch ends and there is a series of lock gates taking vessels between loch Ness and the Caledonian canal.

Having spent a bit of time watching the locks in action we continued our journey back North along the east side of the lock towards Foyers, where our accommodation for the next three nights is.

The east side of the lock is much quieter than the West and we soon arrived in Foyers having driven through some beautiful landscape.

We were a little bit early and couldn't check in until 4:30 p.m. after which we dropped our things in our room and wondered down the hill to another hotel where we had a drink overlooking the loch from our position high on the hillside.

We returned up the hill to our guest house where we had another drink on the balcony and then food in the bar.

We were back in our room before 9:00 and both feeling very tired so we had an early night ready for another day exploring on Wednesday.

Scotland day 8: Moving on to Perth

    May 3 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Now that I'm nearing the end of my travels, I do need more easy days, so today was just spent with going to my next location:Perth, although the route was a wonderful sight to see as on both sides of the A9 wonderful scenery of the mountain surrounded me in a way that a picture - especially a photo made with my phone from a moving bus could never show the same way.

Day 5 - Fairy Glenn Waterfall, Fortrose

    October 30, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

This hike was one we had on all our list to visit especially since we love waterfalls. Located just past Inverness, it was a short hike we could fit in before checking into our hostel.

When we arrived, we were eager to hit the trail, but saw a sign indicating it was closed due to a landslide, and provided us with another way to or. Typical of us, we decided to check it out anyway, thinking the sign might be outdated.

Upon reaching the area, we confirmed the landslide had indeed washed out the bridge. Undeterred, we searched for an alternative route and found a way across.

When we finally reached the waterfall, Jacob insisted on swimming, completely unfazed by the cold air and water. In he went!

On our way back to the car, we decided to follow the recommended trail and stumbled upon a swing. We took some time to have fun before heading to our hostel.

Day 5 - Old Horse Bridge - Carrbridge

    October 30, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Luke discovered an old horse bridge online that he wanted to visit. There isn’t much to it, but it’s the historic bridge that horses used to travel across.

We took a walk there and then had lunch at the park on our way to Inverness.Read more

    Cairngorms Nationaal Park

    September 5, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
