St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles

    April 18 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

So an Irishman, a Spaniard, two French men and a French woman take shelter in a rescue hut on the Camino on the trail over the Pyrenees. It’s not raining or snowing but the wind which was supposed to gust to around 50kph is now blowing constantly at around 85/90kph.

As they stand at the doorway and debate what to do, an Australian who is bent at ninety-degrees into the wind, and has his walking poles ‘lefty’ and ‘righty’ firmly planted in the ground, slowly appears into their field of view as he is blown backwards by the wind – this isn’t the first time it had happened today, and nor would it be the last. The Irishman and the Spaniard quickly race out and drag the Australian into the hut with them. Six people are now crammed into a small space and the Spaniard starts making jokes that only he can understand, and then laughing raucously at his isolated sense of humour. The Irishman tilts his head to one side, starts nodding, knits his brow, and asks the Australian: “are you OK?” One of the French guys who looks to be about 30+ pulls out some food from his pack and urges the Australian to take it. The Australian looks at the vacuum pack that is given to him and recognises it as having the same pureed contents that his Grandchildren are fond of. He accepts it gratefully and starts sucking. The Australian’s humiliation is complete.

Man, what a day. It started out with perfect weather and I was making good time until the winds started. I’d been enjoying the scenery and making contacts along the way but then nature conspired to put a spanner in the works. It resulted in me experiencing probably the hardest physical challenge that I’ve ever had to face. And another thing, while we’re on it. Just two years ago, I was the one asking others if they were OK. It happened to me three times today! I’m going to give it another few days before I decide whether this is a trend or an outlier but my confidence is shaky.

On the positive side, I made it through the hardest day on the Camino Frances (in my opinion), I saw free range horses with bells around their necks grazing and ignoring the weather, saw mares nursing their foals, I made some good friends that I hope to see more of along The Way, the Pilgrim’s meal tonight was simple but fabulous, and the accommodation here at Roncesvalles is really comfortable. Speaking of which, I overheard the Receptionist here, telling someone who was hoping against hope, that all the hotels and the huge alburgue (hostel) here at Roncesvalles are full. Made me feel good about having booked all my accomm ahead of time.

Tomorrow, I’m off to Akeretta and one of my favourite Camino stops. For those of you who have watched the original movie The Way, you’ll remember the courtyard dinner scene early in the movie where Michael Sheen starts arguing with everyone. Same hotel, and Joseph, the innkeeper, makes a fine beef stew.

From today’s Efren Gonzalez video, you can see that Efren’s and my experience on this leg were quite different.

    Blick zurück …

    April 14 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Camino Day 2 - Borda to Roncesvalles

    April 6 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Day 2 on the Camino... A day I'll remember for the rest of my life! Upon leaving the warmth and tranquility of Auberge Borda, I quickly learned all about what is known as the "Magical Mist of the Pyrenees!" The "Mist" is a little chilly, very wet, a bit (or a LOT), eery at times, enchanting, and yes, MAGICAL! 😍 There were moments that if patient for a few more minutes, out of the mist would come a statue, an open range horse or cow, a memorial, a fellow pilgrim...
The terrain was grueling for most of the day. There was more uphill that made me realize my pre-trip training was helpful, but due to the physical demands on my body with sometimes 15% incline with a 17-pound backpack, the training should have been more rigorous. By halfway through the day, I had to remind myself that I am a badass and I could JUST DO IT!! 😂 Positive self talk for the WIN!! 💪🏻
On the descent into Roncesvalles, I rolled my ankle on a treacherous stretch of the trail. With a little more than 2 miles to go, it was a "suck it up, buttercup" moment that taught me I was tougher than I thought. I had not seen another human for nearly 3 hours and was mentally preparing to spend the night in the woods if I was unable to make it to the albergue. During the last mile, I was joined by Alex... a pilgrim from England, who got a late start. Having someone to talk with was a great distraction from the pain in my ankle, and I'm happy to report that I made it all the way to the Pilgrim's Albergue of Roncesvalles! It was an 8 1/2 hour day. I was exhausted, yet so very thankful for this difficult day of my journey. After icing my ankle, I skipped dinner, went straight to the shower, and then went to bed. Something about hiking a nearly 13 mile, mostly uphill, trail led to the best night's sleep in a very long time!! 😴

    Last day in Bayonne...

    April 3 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

My main mission today was to visit the Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne. I am at a loss for words to adequately describe the wave of emotions. I lit a candle, I kneeled in prayer. I sat in silence for an hour before I took photos. To describe the day and my experience at the cathedral in a single word... HEALING! 🙏💜🙏Read more

    Roncesvalles

    April 1 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I’ve still got it! Despite being older and somewhat less fit than the first time I successfully crossed the Napoleon Pass and found my bed in Roncesvalles. And yes, if you’re wondering, my feet hurt like hell! But do not appear blistered. Success!
Today’s sunny, warm weather was in sharp contrast to the crazy storm that tried to blow us off the mountain last time. I could actually take in the beautiful views.
I also got to observe controlled burns in progress throughout the day, at one point up close. Got one foot in the black! If you ever fought wildfires you know what I’m talking about:-)
Dad, no slugs today, you’ll have to make due with a happy looking French snail. Kathy, you get a pic of cute French donkeys. You’re welcome!
Tomorrow’s big decision: do I unfurl my sign and see what happens? I’m feeling more nervous about it than I thought I would. May see how good or not I feel tomorrow…

    St Jean Pied de Port!

    March 31 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Today was a long travel day - two hour car ride, two flights, then a 90 minute shuttle. Tiring, but it all came together and the drive into SJPdP under a very blue sky and among newly green trees and steep Pyrenees very much set the stage for tomorrow.
The pilgrim dinner at my albergue was delicious and the owner was warm and very good at helping a bunch of new pilgrims warm to the experience. That said, I’m so ready to disengage from humans for a few hours, and I’m so looking forward to getting under way tomorrow!
Joseph, the hospitalero, asked each of us to give a book title length statement of our intention for this Camino, understanding it may well change and evolve. I said “Listen deeply, love well.” I know! SO cheesy! But it does summarize well my hopes for this pilgrimage, so I may as well put it out there.
The photos are of the Pilgrim Office, where you pick up your credencial (pilgrim passport) and some basic information, and a shell. The other is of a controlled burn I saw as we drove into town. Fuels management in the Pyrenees!

    Staying in Roncesvalles

    April 12 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 15 °C

Staying at the old monastery here. Built in the 1200’s!! But it’s new here in my floor. I’m with 40 others here. Should be noisy either way snoring tonight! And added bonus big thunder and lightning.

Had some trout at the restaurant next door. Meh. Pretty cool to be in an 800 year old building for the night.
