    Selma - kein Ort zum Verweilen

    Nach dem verkürzten Schlafstopp am Robert F. Henry Damm planten wir, dass Frances ca. 10 Stunden bis zum Campground Elms Bluff fahren und dort dann in der Nacht schlafen würde. Auf dem Weg lag Selma, eine der laut offizieller Statistik gefährlichsten Städte der USA. Im letzten Jahr mussten wir hier leider einen längeren Schlafstopp einlegen, in einer verlassenen Marina, die in keiner guten Gegend liegt.
    Diesmal war nur ein kurzer Stopp geplant. Als Frances sich der Stadt näherte und ich am Treffpunkt wartete, überlegte ich nochmals. Wieso blieben wir letztes Jahr hier, wenn doch Elms Bluff nur 2 Stunden entfernt ist. Es ließ mir keine Ruhe und ich suchte nach meiner damaligen Aufzeichnung des Rennens. Und da war es, Elms Bluff war keine 2 sondern 8 Stunden entfernt. Es war damals ein Fehler in der Karte, der dummerweise dieses Jahr von uns übernommen wurde.
    So blieb uns nichts anderes übrig, als wieder hier zu bleiben, so dass Frances zumindest einige Stunden Schlaf abbekam. Zumindest hatten wir dieses Jahr keinen Besuch von zwielichtigen Gestalten.    Read more

    Selma

    Up to now, every Park we've visited was history, natural or human. Selma is different. This is our living history. The Selma to Montgomery HistoricTrail recounts in pictures, film and audio the struggle of hundreds of African Americans and some whites to gain voting rights in the 60's!

    Courage comes easily from behind a white hooded robe. Real courage is facing snarling dogs and cattle-prod thrusting clansmen dressed as cops. Without flinching, without fighting back.

    You have to wonder, given the governing paralysis today in Washington, if voting rights legislation would even get through Congress.    Read more

    A place knowns for voting rights movement in the 1960's. On Sunday, March 7th 1965 about 600 civil rights marchers headed out of Selma direction Montgomery. What started as "Bloody Sunday" as the marchers were attacked by the local authorities, ended as a march with over 25000 participants on the 3th attempt.
    Selma, a vivid city with population of 28000 in the 1960's looks today as a city where the time stopped. Only about 18000 people live here today. I had a feeling that we are the only people walking on the streets. Passing by storefronts of closed businesses and restaurants, we walked into a tiny open coffee place. I could not help it, I had a feeling like everybody moved out.

    Selma je mesto najviac známe asi vďaka protestom za hlasovacie práva v 60tych rokoch. V nedelu 7meho marca sa približne 600 demonštrantov vybralo pochodovať na mesto Montgomery. Čo začalo ako "Krvavá nedela", keďže protestujúci boli napadnutí hneď po začatí protestu, sa nakoniec skončilo na tretí pokus ako protest s viac ako 25000 zúčastníkmi.
    Selma, ktorá bola v 60tych rokoch celkom živé mestečko (cca.28000 obyvateľov) dnes pripomína mestečko v ktorom zastal čas. Dnes tu žije len okolo 17000 ľudí. Pri prechádzke som mala pocit že sme jediní ludia co chodia po uliciach. Medzi výkladmi pozatváraných obchodov a reštaurácii sme našli malú otvorenú kaviareň. Nemohla som si pomôcť a stále som mala pocit akoby sa všetci z tohto mesta vysťahovali..    Read more
