• Big Buddha- Climbing to Serenity

    23 Februari 2025, Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Seeing the Tian Tan Buddha from the Ngong Ping 360 cable car was one thing—but standing at the base of it, staring up at its sheer size, was something else entirely. Perched on Lantau Island, surrounded by misty mountains and a peaceful atmosphere (minus the other tourists huffing and puffing their way up the stairs or just plain stopping mid stair to check their phone), this statue is one of the most impressive and spiritually significant landmarks in HK

Let’s talk stats, because this isn’t just any Buddha—it’s a massive one. Built in 1993, it took three years to complete and is made up of 202 bronze pieces, weighing a casual 250 metric tons (no big deal). The statue itself stands at 26.4 meters (86 feet), but when you include the lotus pedestal and base, it reaches 34 m—basically the height of an 11-story building. And for some reason, it’s one of the very few big Buddhas that faces north (towards Beijing), while most others traditionally face south.

The Buddha sits in a peaceful, meditative pose, one hand raised in blessing, the other resting on his lap in a gesture of wisdom. Around him, six smaller bronze statues, called the “Offering of the Six Devas,” present gifts of flowers, incense, a lamp, ointment, fruit, and music—all representing the Six Perfections in Buddhism: generosity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom.

To reach the Big Buddha, you have to climb 268 steps. Now, depending on the status of your feet after many long travel days, this is either a mini spiritual journey of self-discovery or a foot-day workout from blister hell (is that a thing lol??! It was to my baby toe at least). It was quite easy actually. Had to remind myself I ran up the CN Tower in Toronto as a race. Easy peasy!

At the top, you’re rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the lush mountains of Lantau Island, the South China Sea in the distance, and the surrounding Po Lin Monastery. The view just made me want to come back but during the summer to enjoy the water!
