Right Turns Only

Big day… so obviously it required a big breakfast.

We wandered over to Tree of Life Cuban Cafe for a Cuban start to the morning.

I kept it simple… toast and butter with a café con leche (yes… I got to use my Spanish 😂)

On the way back we stopped by a local park to take in the views.

There were ibis 🪶, some very friendly squirrels and a few colourful murals dotted around town… a nice calm start before what was about to be a very exciting day.

Serious geek time.

And a moment I’ve been looking forward to for a long time…

We arrived right as the gates opened and headed straight to the Rocket Garden.

And honestly…

WOW.

I must have said that about 100 times throughout the day 😂

Almost everything here is the real deal… not replicas. Real rockets. Real hardware. Real history.

> Explorer Tour

Next we jumped on the Explorer Tour bus, led by an incredible guide who had worked with NASA for over 40 years.

The man was a walking encyclopedia.

So much information… my brain may have slightly overloaded 😂

> Launch Complex Views

We stopped at Launch Complex 39 and the view was unreal.

In the distance sat Artemis II on the launch pad.

Clear skies. Blazing sun. Proper space history in front of us 🥵😂

We also visited the A/B camera viewpoint, used during early missions, located within a mile of the launch sites… much closer than standard viewing areas today.

> The Crawler 😳

Then came one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen…

The Crawler-Transporter 2

This absolute beast transports rockets from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad.
• Speed: about 0.8 mph
• Time to move a rocket: about 11 hours 😂
• Includes: bathrooms and a restaurant onboard 😳

It’s officially one of the heaviest self-powered vehicles in the world.

The track it travels on… the crawlerway… is massive and carefully engineered to reduce vibration.

Geek levels: off the scale.

Next stop: the Vehicle Assembly Building.

There are no words for how big this thing is.

Even standing right in front of it… it’s hard to comprehend.

It’s just… massive 😂

We also got to walk along a crew access arm and white room from the Apollo era… the exact type of structure astronauts used before boarding rockets.

And the American flag painted on the building?

Each star is about 6 feet wide 🤯

> More Space Hardware

Along the tour we also passed:
• SpaceX launch areas (with multiple Cybertrucks 😳😂)
• Blue Origin facilities
• Boeing hangars
• and various launch viewing points

Plus some unexpected wildlife:

✅ gators 🐊
✅ bunnies
✅ eagles 🦅
✅ hogs
✅ armadillos

Because… Florida 😂

> Apollo / Saturn V Center

Next we arrived at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

And were immediately greeted by the engines of a Saturn V rocket.

Huge doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Because this particular rocket was never launched, it’s displayed in full… with sections opened so you can see the engines and structure.

Also here were:
• moon rovers
• spacesuits
• landers
• mission artefacts

All real.

We also joined a guided talk explaining the meaning behind mission badges, followed by a launch control simulation using actual audio from a real mission.

Absolutely fascinating.

> Space Shuttle Atlantis

Back at the main complex we headed straight to Space Shuttle Atlantis.

This one felt closer to “our era” and yes, the real Atlantis is right there.

We even tried the launch simulation… and it was brilliant.

Eventually… reluctantly… I had to leave.

I could easily have spent another full day there 😂

Still keeping with the theme, we stopped by the IMAX and watched Project Hail Mary 👏😂

And finished the day in true American style:

🍟 cheesy fries

An absolutely unforgettable day.
