  • Mandalay

    14. november 2015, Myanmar ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A tour of Mandalay's highlights! (Not that much to be honest!)
The best bit was the Ubein bridge by sunset. A very rickety and old bridge made from Teak wood. Of note- there is also no hand-rail for most of the bridge! Eeeek!!

Local rumours are that some of the main structural bits of teak were from the original Mandalay Place.

Women capture birds (in this case owls and parokeets) and then try to tell them to passers-by. Local tradition is to buy these birds and say a prayer as they release them.

  • Kuang si Falls

    2. desember 2015, Laos ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

We spent an amazing day at these beautiful falls. We got the boat from Luang Prabang down the Mekong for 40mins to a local village. There we were met by a flat bed truck which we shared with our new Brazilian friends Maria and Andre. We bumped down the road for a further 20 mins before arriving at Kouang Si Falls.

We then decided to go to the top, which was quite an adventure in itself. We literally had to climb up the very steep slope for almost an hour! (It later turns out we took the hard way up - not ideal in flipflops!)

After a beer (or 2) at the top, we made it down (the easy way!) in about 10 mins!

  • Food Tour

    20. desember 2015, Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

With so many delicious sights and smells coming from the many stalls which litter the pavements of Hanoi, we decided to take a food tour...by scooter!

This is not for the faint hearted. Its difficult to know if its more scary eating unfamiliar food from places which look like hot-spots for food poisioning or zooming through the lawless streets of Hanoi on the back of the scooter!

We tried all sorts of different food under the tutelage of our guides Lilly and Mia. The list of the things we ate and places we went are attached incase you're feeling brave!

  • Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan

    22. desember 2015, Vietnam ⋅ 🌫 21 °C

Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan is arguably one of the best Pho restauarants in Hanoi and is very popular with the locals. Renowned for offering subtle flavours, and a clear broth, yet it is equally notorious for what some describe as its ‘arrogant’ service. This is not a tourist friendly spot. Here you have to stand in line and pay in advance to get your bowl of soup. Thus the nickname — Pho Xep Hang or ’Line-Up Pho’. Next find any spare seat and tuck in! Yum!Les mer

  • Nono: Bags of initiative

    6. januar 2016, Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Meet Nono, who gave up his job as a lawyer to become a park ranger at Barat National Park in Bali.

He set up an initiative encouraging the local people and fishermen to collect the rubbish that they find floating in the sea. In return he makes them a bag!

This idea was so popular that now he employs 7 people from the local village to make these fabulous bags.

Its not everyday that you meet someone who is truly passionate about what they do, however these bags are a true labour of love.

It takes each person one day to make one bag. However he is keen to expand his program. The money he makes from making the bags is put back into his education and awareness drive.

He's on a mission: To clean up the sea and to stop people using plastic bags.

The truth is, Nono is so much more than just a Park Ranger. He is a visionary and a passionate educator. He is keen to share his knowledge with locals and tourists alike. He regulary organises volunteers to help care for the coral reefs and is just about to start a school to help other local guides learn better english so they can help spread the word about wildlife and marine conservation.

His charming manner and true love of what he does, makes his enthusiasm contageous.

This is a man on a mission.

If you would like to buy a bag, either let us know or contact Nono directly at nono.friendsofnature@gmail.com
