    Anastasia Quarry forest walk

    December 16, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

After our lunch, we felt the need to walk off a few bites of souvlaki, so we headed back to camp via the Anastasia Quarry. The Spanish discovered that the local limestone, consisting mostly of small mollusk shells, made EXCELLENT protective walls for a fort. Because it is so porous, cannon balls that normally would shatter walls, just bounced off or got stuck and stayed where they hit. The photo of the sample is from the Castillo de San Marcos wall.

The forest was dense and eerie with wildlife seen and unseen. Gordon, who had never touched a Kudzu vine, found they made excellent support for playing Tarzan.
