A new Adventure!

Heather and I are on the road again! This time headed to Vancouver, BC to spend 3 months with our Son and his family.
This trip is public, but if you ask if you can follow me: the answer is "no" unless you are family or friends.

  • Laundry Day

    20. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Did laundry this morning. The laundry room at the YMCA is large and not expensive. Wash was $2.00 a load and the dryer cost 75 cents to dry everything.

Tonight there were rumors of dancing. I was asked if I could do a Hambo with Joanne. Of course!Les mer

  • Hike to Gem Lake

    21. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Margaret and I had another hike this morning. This time to Gem Lake.

The hike was 2 miles in with an elevation gain of 1200 feet. The slope is about 10% on an average, but some places were much steeper.

Both Margaret and I were proud that our feet, knees, hips and muscles were up to the challenge. It bodes well for hiking in Vancouver.

  • Reunion is over

    22. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Alas, the time has come to part. It has been wonderful reconnecting with my cousins. I am looking forward to the next reunion, whenever that is. Hopefully I can convince Yosem and Gabbie to come.

I did go to breakfast this morning before the doors opened to avoid the line.

I had hoped to take the road west from here, it goes up over the Continental Divide at over 10,000 feet elevation. The route sounds beautiful, but Rocky Mountains Nation Park has a thing called “timed entry”. The entry times on the road were for after noon and I did not want to wait that long, so I am taking the northerly route through Wyoming to get to Mark.

Now I am just waiting to help pack up and clean out the meeting room. Once we do that, I will hit the road. Today I take byways to Rawlins, WY.

  • Hail on I80

    22. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ 🌩️ 64 °F

I hung around the Y to help Joanne and Michael to pack up the common room. That meant I got started on the road a bit more than an hour later than I had planned. So I did hop on I80 from Laramie to Rawlins.

The clouds were dramatic, and it looked like there were showers. I was not prepared for the hail. It started out a small walnut sized hail. I slowed way down. I did not stop thinking that if I stopped, the top of my car would be toast. But that did pass. But then while the hail got smaller, it became much more common. I got a little worried when the road was covered with hail. I have Florida Highway tires, perfect for warm wet roads, but not made for cold and ice.

After I got through, I stopped at a rest stop to check the car for damage. Only one little ding on the hood and another on the top.

I took a photo back in the direction of the hail storm, and another towards Rawlins. The way forward looked clear thankfully.

    Update…
I looked at the front of the car. The front license holder is smashed and one of the hole covers is gone. Nothing serious. I was very lucky.

  • Oh no! More hail?

    23. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ 🌬 70 °F

The storms in Wyoming this morning looked ominous. Fortunately, the road turned and all I got were a few sprinkles. After I passed by the storm, I stopped and got a photo looking back at it. I have to say that it was more frightening in the rear view mirror than in the photo.Les mer

  • Made it safe and sound to Mark’s

    23. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

    Made it safe and sound.

I fought a head wind all day, varying from head on to mostly sideways. Yesterday it was a tailwind. I preferred the tail wind. The difference showed in the gas milage. Yesterday I got 24 mph, today it was 20mph.Les mer

  • Lunch in Baker City , OR

    25. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

After a great visit with Mark, it was time to move on. I am tired and ready to get to Vancouver. I know I said that I was going to mosey up to Vancouver, but I am done moseying. So today I am hot footing it. If I could go 90, I went 90, otherwise I went as fast as I could given the traffic and speed limit (10 to 15 over) would allow.

Here I am in Baker City for lunch. Stopped at The Mother Load. I chose the grilled chicken salad with bacon, plus an ice tea. All is very tasty.

The stop here is giving me an opportunity to look for a place to spend the night. I will continue on to Kennewick, WA. I just made the reservation at the Hampton Inn. It is another 156 miles, 2 hours and 16 minutes. I should get there about 3pm, if I am doing the math right.

There are many brew pubs in Kennewick, so I am assured of an excellent dinner.

  • Last day of travel

    26. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Almost there. Just on last hiccup… I don’t remember where I stashed my passport. Oh well, it will turn up. I know I packed it.

I found them. Where was it you are asking? Not in the cubby hold in the back of the car, though I had pills there. Not in the messenger bag, though that is where the spare glasses are. It was in the outside of my suitcase, the last place I looked.Les mer

  • Not my day

    26. juni 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

I have not had problems with drivers like so have had today. And to top it off, I left my iPad in Kennewick.

I called and let the hotel know that I will have FedEx or UPS come and pick it up. They can send it to me in Vancouver for a small phenomenal fee. But better than driving back to Kennewick.Les mer

  • Made it!

    26. juni 2023, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

    Made it!

I had decided that today was having so many issues that if there were problems at the border that I would go back to Kennewick and try again tomorrow.

But the border guard was pleasant and I had every she needed, mostly it was a manifest of what I was leaving at that apartment. As she scanned the list she kept saying “that’s ok” over and over.

So now I am here, ready for a long nap.

  • Called FedEx to get my iPad

    26. juni 2023, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I wish I had more faith in humanity. I don’t believe for a second that FedEx will show up tomorrow at the Hampton Inn hotel with a box and then ship it to me here in Canada.

What could possibly go wrong you ask? FedEx goes to the wrong hotel. FedEx shows up but without a box. The box is not padded and my iPad is shattered. The morning hotel staff haven’t a clue of what FedEx is talking about. The box is sent to Florida. The box is lost in transit, though for about a week I can use the app to find the location. The box takes 3 weeks to get here instead of by Friday.

I did call the hotel, the person I talked to was calm and confident. I assume she is young.

But if need be, I will buy another iPad.

  • Home, Sweet Home

    23. september 2023, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Made it home safe and sound.

The plants all look health except for one rosemary that died. But there are 2 more that are healthy.

I talked with Yosem this afternoon. Vanessa went to the apartment last weekend to sew and will go again this weekend. She is sewing something for Gabbie’s birthday. I am very glad that I left the sewing stuff there for her to use.Les mer
