Once more with wheeling

Our previous journeys brought us to Paradise. Leaving is harder than escaping Devil's Island: instead of guards & guillotines, think friendly neighbors, palm trees, Bocce ball. But adventure & grandkids call. Welcome to "once more with wheeling!"
  • Proof of aliens!

These are the fossils of aliens embedded in the sandstone at Mesa Verde National Park. The first is obviously the equivalent of our thigh bone. The second is clearly the stem of an alien peace pipe. This would explain the tradition of peace pipes in the American Indian culture. The aliens where here for eons prior to the Indians arrival, and when the Indians came, the aliens greeted them with open tentacles and they all smoke a pipe together.

  • Main Street Brewery & Restaurant

After a tough day of playing tourist in the beating sun, we felt we needed some liquid refreshment. We opted for the Main Street Brew Pub that turned out to have a STELLAR selection of brews. We got 10 samples and had a bang up time comparing tastes, aromas, finishes, and checking out the blended components individually. The burger was danged good, too!

  • More on the Limousine Ranch

Someone commented on an earlier post that it was a good thing we did not explore the most intriguing Limousine Ranch that we passed. They thought it was mating season for limousines, and they hear that limousines can get quite testy around that time.

If that is the case we are certainly fortunate that we demurred. The nice lady at the Amarillo KOA had offered us the option of riding to the Big Texan Steak House on the restaurant’s limousine service. We declined, but did see the limo drive into the parking lot. I found a photo of the limousine online that I share below, though you lose something by not being able to see the driver wore a sombrero that took up half the front seat and a grin almost as wide.

I also found a photo of the female of the species. You definitely would NOT want to tangle with these two when they were batting eyes, or waving longhorns.

  • Leaving Cortez

We’ve had a good day’s rest and two comfortable nights’ sleep as the temperature dipped into the 50’s. We were snug under our down comforter.

We have travelled over 2000 miles now and are 2/3 of the way to Vancouver. We have a long drive to Salt Lake City today. We’re just glad we’re not traveling East. We’d be blind!

  • Into Utah

Even though we’ve been in these parts before, it is almost physically painful to be racing through so fast. We may be compelled to come home through the Southwest just to restore balance in the universe.

The Utah landscape quickly became drier and redder, and as we approached Moab right outside of Arches National Park, it became a red rock masterpiece.

  • Breakfast at the Jailhouse Cafe

We stopped in the happening little town of Moab, right outside Arches NP, for a hearty breakfast. We can highly recommend the Jailhouse Cafe. Gordon enjoyed a bacon and cheese omelet, while Heather chowed down a spinach, feta and mushroom. In addition, the whole grain toast receives the Gordon P Sweet tasty and hearty bread seal of approval. Happy campers.

Unfortunately , once again we attacked our food with such frenzied abandon that it was gone before we remembered to photograph it for a post. Gordon took a photo if his bulging stomach as a poor stand in. It does NOT receive the Wilson Nicoll seal if approval for fine photography. However, it earns runner up for the coveted Ruth Nicoll creative solutions award.

  • Dinner with Mark

Had a very nice dinner with my brother Mark. I haven’t seen him in forever. He took us to an excellent brewpub called Squatters (what a surprise!) Once again Heather and I enjoyed fine beers with our fish and sweet potato fries. She quaffed a toothy Russian Imperial Stout and I guzzled an untold number (two) of Imperial IPAs. Mark showed a more refined palate and sipped a simple IPA with his salad.

Afterwards we went to Mark’s lovely home so Heather could see the wonderful work Mark had done since she was last there.

  • Salt Lake City KOA

How come we get the littlest tree in the campground?

On our way here Heather drove from Soldier Summer on US6 down to I-15. Starting at 7500 feet and careening down to 4300 feet, she found out that the Salt Lake City natives like to go 75 miles and hour down this steep and windy road. Heather slowed down to 50-65 when Gordon started squealing like a little girl. In my defense, I was not really squealing, I was was going “wheeee” in a manly countertenor voice.

  • Les Schwab to the rescue

The trailer tires are wearing quickly. I had hoped that a new axle would fix the problem and had hoped we could make it to Vancouver on the old tires, but nope.

That was Gordon with the bare bones details. This is Heather with the rest of the story.

Gordon had planned to do a big post on team living as related to the Les Schwab incident. However, being stuck in the parking lot a half hour before opening so we would be first in line, he is faced with making a post on his phone and his fingers are too fat. Excuse me, MANLY.

Anyway, 3 days ago Gordon began worrying aloud about the uneven wear on the trailer tires, but he hoped they would last the trip. Then that they would last til Vancouver. Then Ellensburg, then Boise. After some discussion, he agreed to call the tire shop in Salt Lake City, which at this point was a few hours away. We could get seen in the morning.

A few miles later he thanked me for encouraging him to fix the tires as soon as possible. I said, Sure, I could see he was really worrying about it. He asked, Why wasn’t I worrying? My answer, “Because YOU are covering that. It’s my job to encourage you to get it fixed so you won’t worry.”

    Team living.

PS Gordon’s brother Mark showed up for moral support. Gordon was explaining the situation in manly fashion, then they saw me taking photos for the post. Heh.

  • Welcome to Washington

What?! ANOTHER one? We are near the end of our bat-out-of-Hades journey to Vancouver. We cross the border tomorrow, and tomorrow night will be so happy to see long distant munchkins and munchkins’ munchkins.

  • Ellensburg KOA

The Ellensburg KOA is very nice. And notice.... no small tree for us to be under! And the KOA is right on the Yakima River!

On the way into Ellensburg, we stopped at the Home and Ranch TruValue store to get a pair U- bolts. I want to move the spare tire mount from the tongue of the trailer back to the rear where it was originally mounted. This will better balance the weight of the trailer. I only mention this because if you ever need hardware and you are in Ellensburg, the Home and Ranch TruValue store is the place to go.

We are drinking up the last of our beer because we have 4 bottles of wine to take over the border, but any additional beer will require that we pay duty.

  • Leaving Ellensburg

We’re headed into the Cascade mountains. And the clouds. Just ahead of the rain.

I don’t know whether we will be returning to this campground, beautiful as it is. This is the second time a skunk, or some poor animal sprayed by one, has parked itself under our trailer for a comfy night’s snooze. Gordon slept through it. I’m letting him drive through the construction. I may let him drive all day. I may be getting a wee bit ready to be in Vancouver. And eat chocolate cake.

Ok. The cafe in North Bend where they filmed many scenes of Twin Peaks has EXCELLENT coffee and a lotta danged food! Feeling better.

We are planning the last leg, hoping to avoid Seattle traffic.

  • Yes, Yosem and Gabbie do exist!

Yosem, being a chip off the old block, is preparing lamb in garlic lemon honey rub with roast potatoes. He apparently butchered the lamb himself with Vanessa’s help. They are sitting pretty in case of the zombie apocalypse, assuming they can find some lambs.

Gabbie is busy making beautiful display pots of quite a collection of succulent plants. Apparently Yosem has been complaining about the green encroachment on the stainless steel counter that was supposed to be his his exclusive domaine. “I’m being evicted,” Gabbie states stoically.

    Gordon is helping.

  • Heather's birthday celebration

My birthday was over 2 weeks ago but Yosem was having none of it. He spent an entire day making an authentic Swedish Lemon Fromage, which for the record has NO fromage in it. It was a feast for the eyes AND the palate.

The girls did not approve of my choice to have only one candle, feeling that 70 little flames would be more appropriate. Vanessa did not approve of the fromage at all, and dove into leftover chocolate cake and a naked piece of the sweet crust from the lemon bomb.

We are looking forward to a reprise Monday, sans the candle.
