    11 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We lost a little sleep last night. About 1:00 am the wind picked up. Gusts up to 60 mph. Electricity went out. The Geezer mobile was shaking rattling rolling. At one point I jerked upright to listen better. I thought the horn of the train passing might be the air raid siren they use to warn of tornados.

This morning it's blustery and sunny. We're still heading for Oklahoma, hoping that tge weather sticks to the eastern side of the state as predicted.

  • Guthrie Oklahoma

    13 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

What a total surprise Guthrie is. They have a vibrant downtown in lovingly restored historic brick and stone buildings.

We had lunch at Stacy's Cafe with a gorgeous pressed tin ceiling and murals on the wall. The waitress was worried we would not have enough onion rings to share, so she brought us a giant plate full in addition to those by our sandwich. We ordered a cup of bean soup, which was actually a BOWL of beans, and our waitress was adamant you couldn't have beans without cornbread, so she brought us a complementary piece each. Good grief. We couldn't eat half our food. Fortunately, the waitress seemed understanding when we said we were too full for dessert. I was worried I would have to order some so as to not hurt her feelings.

We also headed up to Stillwater after Guthrie, but have no photos. Seemed like a nice town, but a little isolated for us.

  • Tulsa and Broken Arrow

    15 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Well, we MUST have been getting really tired about now. In fact Gordon and I had a moment where he was convinced I was wanting to move FASTER and I thought he was going to have a complete melt-down. Anyway, we don't have any photos.

Stayed at the Mingo RV park. We bought out The Fresh Market. We looked at houses. We fought traffic. But Tulsa is nice. It's big, though.

We were still not together enough to be alert photographers, but we managed to get a photo of the street and house I grew up in from age 2 to 13. I still feel very at home in this town. Gordon liked that there were lots of trees and gardens.En savoir plus

  • Little Rock AR KOA

    18 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We have big plans to fill in the blank spots from the past week. We've just been getting a little worn out looking at towns with an eye to making a new home somewhere.

This morning we tried to look at Bentonville, Arkansas but there was MORE TRAFFIC THAN ATLANTA!! And it's a small city!! So IT'S off the list. Poof. Finito. Get outa town as fast as we can given the horrific gridlock.

At the moment we are making a bee-line to Marietta to visit sister Laurie, John, and (yay) our nephew Matthew. Shortest distance took us through Little Rock.

We are celebrating being out of the land of 3% beer! AND being back in the land of The Fresh Market!!! (!) which was the one positive of Bentonville. We mixed and matched our own 6-pack today, and were SMITTEN by the Coney Island hard root beer. Good to the last drop.

  • Rest in Marietta with Laurie and John

    20 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

A couple days of rest and relaxation with Heather's sister and her husband. And as a special bonus our nephew Matthew as therealso.

Oh ... and we had had a discussion before arriving that we needed to do laundry before we arrived, because Gordon has a big reputation for monopolizing the washer and dryer from dawn to dusk. Heather appears to get off scott free, even though half the laundry is hers. But we REALLY didn't want Laurie and John to think we were just dropping in to use the facilities. We had time to do laundry in Eureka Springs, but it was SO DANGED WET AND HUMID we were afraid nothing would dry. We might have tried in Tupelo, but it was the tiniest danged laundry room we ever saw. So we resolved to buck it up and just go naked if we had to, but we were NOT going to do laundry at Laurie and John's.

Fortunately for us, we apparently underestimated the entertainment value of our monopolizing the laundry facilities while visiting. Once we understood, we dived in, narrowly avoiding the bare-all strategy. A good time and many guffaws was had by all.

  • Homosassa State Park

    26 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

This was our change to see manatees without having to take a boat ride! We would not be held hostage for hours in the bright hot sun! And... And... (I am shaking with excitement), there is an underwater viewing chamber!

So with that we stopped at the Homosassa River State Park, just after 11am. We expected to walk in, plop down our $13 each, march into the viewing room, see the manatees, ooh and aah, and be back on the road in 15 minutes. Plenty of time before lunch.

The first warning, which we ignored in our rush to the bathrooms, was the little old lady who directed us to the boat that would take us to the park. In our brain addled rush to the bathrooms, I figured that the viewing room must not be in the visitor center located right on the main road, but perhaps just a few feet out into the marsh. So after visiting the little boy and girl rooms, we hopped into the boat.

There in the boat, waiting for the 11:30 departure, I noticed that there was no awning on the boat. mmmm... maybe I better run back and get my hat. But there wasn't enough time, so coverless, I faced the boat trip, expecting the hot Florida sun to beat down on my newly shorn head (I got a haircut last week, number 1 cut, which to me is the 1/16 inch attachment, but for this barber it meant no attachment).

The ride out to the visitor center was nice. Mostly in the shade of lots of trees. The boat man, a nice volunteer, gave us a history of the park and the animals we might see. I was expecting a wild animal experience, but this state park use to be a private attraction until 20 years ago. The previous owners had imported some animals, including a hippo (which is now the oldest hippo in the world). Carrying on the tradition, the state now releases rescued animals into the park, birds, bears, bobcats, etc. And there was something about the feeding of the hippo at 12:30, and the feeding of the manatees at 1:30. At this point it was not sounding very wild, but rather a visit to Disney Land.

At the end of the nice boat ride, we exited, crossed a road, saw plenty of parking, and exclaimed: "what! we could have driven here! Why didn't anyone tell us that!"

We entered the visitor center, handed over our $26, and the very nice lady told us the feeding of the manatees was at 1:30. Heather not so politely asked where we could see the darn manatees, but the lady, who stopped being so nice, repeated in her best school marm voice, "the feeding of the manatees is at 1:30."

They stamped the back of our hands with something in the shape of a chicken, though if I turned my head sideways and held my hand at an awkward angle, someone might thought it was the shape of a manatee, but only if they had never seen a chicken before.

One of the other visitors came to the rescue of the schoolmarm and told us the manatees could be seen anytime. So, with our spirits rubbed raw but not broken, we went into the park.

We walked over to the viewing platform... to be continued

  • Oops. Wrong turn

    27 mai 2016, États Unis ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We went into Perry this morning to get coffee and we headed out of town. We were planning on taking a nice state route all the way to Milton. I had set my iphone up with the route and was trusting the navigator to get us there. Imagine my suprise when we showed up at the on ramp to I10!

We pulled off the road, took stock of our oops, and found a way to get off I10 fairly quickly and back onto the route we had originally planned.

It is these unplanned adventures that make life interesting.

The road is busy and the police are stopping cars
