Our northernmost destination. We felt we were standing at the top of the world, and truly we almost were. Standing on the beach we were looking directly out to the arctic circle. Almost by accident we discovered a chocolatier offering the "world's best hot chocolate." I think Gordon agreed.

Speaking of the arctic circle, even though it is not solstice yet, we think it does not get dark up here. Because it is so close to the circle, there is a glow that lasts hours both after sunset and before sunrise. The darkest we've seen has been around 2:30 when there was a faint pre-dawn glow. Drive to Loch Ness

We drove down to the south side of Loch Ness hoping to get a sight of Nessie. Also, no luck. The road we took was called General Wades Military Road. It was built in the early 1700s to assist in the suppression of the Jacobite rebellion. The road was built to a standard width of 16 feet where possible, but no less than 10 feet. While the road surface is no longer made of stones, the width has not been changed.もっと詳しく

旅行者We caught it on a clear day. We had driven up it on the other side on our way to Ullapool and it was a deep murky green. Sort of monster color.

Walk through Hexham to Abbey

旅行者 They were having some sort of Abbey festival with music, tour guides and historians in costume, demonstrations. It was a great day to turn up.

Hexham Abbey 1

This is the first large abbey built in England. At the time it was first built in 674, it was the largest abbey north of the Alps. The abbey was totally destroyed several times. The only remaining portion of the original abbey is the crypt where the finger bones is St Andrew were stored. The rest of the abbey was total rebuilt at the start of the 20th century.もっと詳しく

Here is our hostess Mavis with our full English breakfast. A full English breakfast has an egg, ham, sausage, toast, tomato, mushrooms, and baked beans. We think that the baked beans must be something that became traditional during WW2.もっと詳しく

Hadrian's Wall

We drove to a car park at Steel Rig to see and walk along the wall. But the parking lot was full! So I stopped the car on the road, Heather jumped out and got took a picture of the wall, and hopped back back into the car. That is the picture of rocks covered with grass.

Then we drove 2 miles further down the road and took another road that crossed the wall. No car park there, but no cars either. We parked on the side of the road and went to look at the wall. That is the picture with Gordon and what is clearly a wall.

There were plenty of British around. They were walking along the wall with their walking sticks and packs. It seems that walking is the greatest British pastime. I think that when civilization breaks down the British will do just fine. They will just get out their packs and their walking sticks and walk out of the city. Americans will hop into their cars and die of hunger while waiting for the traffic jam to clear.もっと詳しく

Dinner at the The Tannery

This is our AirBnB stay for the next four nights. It is a very lovely cottage attached to the host's house. And that round thing in the middle of the floor is the old well, covers in glass. We cannot bring ourselves to walk on it.もっと詳しく

旅行者Haha. We did peer carefully over the edge in case there might be bones down there. The house is 200 years old and they discovered the well when they remodeled a few years ago.

This is the abbey that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. It was lived in until the middle 1800s at which time it finally crumble into its current condition.

Slough, last stop before returning to US

We are staying at an AirBnB near Heathrow rather than an airport hotel. Very nice hosts and less than 20 minutes to the airport.
