PodróżnikWe had a clear view of Bellaggio across the water...site of the infamous mom nap. And Gordon got a photo of what we think was Varenna but it was pretty pixilated. I almost took a photo of what might have been the infamous parking lot at the top. I DID whisper "FORMAGIO! I polizei!" As we passed. Believe me, you are right in the car with us.

Milan to Porto Santo Stephano

Along the way we passed by the marble quarries at Carrara. Unfortunately my photo of the mountain side doesn't show the multitude of quarries that we could see with our eyes. Then we passed by the industrial area with stacks of quarried marble. I exclaimed to Heather "look at all that marble." But did I think to get a photo of a marble yard? I did, but not until we we out of the large yards. I did get a photo of a small yard, so I count myself fortunate.

The mountains along the route were very spectacular. I did not know that Italy had such pointy peaks south of the Alps.

Along the drive the scenery turned into lovely Tuscan landscapes.

The photo of Heather was taken when we were flagging and getting tired. The espresso is so strong that it feels like taking a drug. But after that one espresso, we were ready to continue on our way. Czytaj więcej

Porto Santo Stefano

Why can't the Italians have cities with short names?

Anyway, Porto Santo Stefano is a lovey town. We look forward to exploring tomorrow.

Our apartment is cozy, but cold. I don't think that anyone has stayed for sometime. The heat is now on and we hope that it will warm up enough to sleep. Tomorrow the temperature is forecast to get to 68 degrees so we will open up to the doors and let the warm fresh air in. Czytaj więcej

PodróżnikOur favorites are CHEAP ones. So far all have been good. I have it on good authority that because of the even sunny weather there is no such thing as a bad Italian wine. We'll let you know if we find one.

Morning drive on outside of island

We drove out to the Mediterranean side of the island. The view out included the near islands and out to Corsica with snow covered peaks.

Nice restaurant where no one spoke English. We got gnocchi with a prawn sauce. I learned a new Italian word, dilezionio (and my pronunciation is as bad as my spelling).

Old roman port city that was abandoned when the Tiber river changed its course. Lots of low brick walls forming a maze of shops, baths, houses, and temples. Here are some photos that show the ruins followed by a set of photos showing the tiles in the baths.

Etruscans predate Romans. These tombs are from around 500 BC. ONLY 16 at this site are open to the public out of 6000 discovered.

Our first Tuscan hill town. Our cute little restaurant offered exclusively regional specialties. The bathrooms were a treat ... carved out of the hillside!

One of them looming over Naples and the other further down the . It is very hazy today. Hope it isn't the volcano! The last eruption was almost yesterday in 1944.

Lots of narrow streets filled with cars. It reminded me of driving as a teenager. Only then I didn't know to scream whenever there was a car about to run into me.

Lazy day Tuesday

We lazed, browsed, napped, drank tea, then wine and generally had a great day. Gordon enhanced his experience by running a few clothes through the washer. The house advertises washer and dryer. We found the dryer out on the patio ... a rack ... but it worked.

For our big activity we walked up the hill to the Restaurant da Mimi for lunch. That pasta looking thing is actually winter squash baked in marinara and mozzarella. Delicious! Gordon had a thick rich vegetable soup and a salad with fresh tuna. We splurged on pistachio profiteroles for dessert.

On our way out Luigi, the spunky 4-year-old son of our waitress, brought out 2 fresh lemons for us to take out. I think he was going off the reservation, but the waitress smiled and said it was fine. Shoulda gotten a photo of the little fireball. Czytaj więcej

PodróżnikFood has been more difficult than you'd think. We generally only eat one meal out a day and get food at the shops for the rest. I'm getting tired of bread and cheese. We are VERY spoiled by the variety in our grocery stores.

Still relaxing ...

One day was not enough. We delayed cabin fever by walking up to the shops for food and are now well enough supplied we don't have to go out again. While lazing on the couch enjoying the view, I was moved by the light to go out onto the patio to snap a couple of photos. Czytaj więcej
