      Nonnenmattweiher

      August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We were able to escape the heat in the valleys today, but we were still drawn to the water. Mountain swimming pool, mountain lake or mountain river?

Without further ado, we decided on the Nonnenmattweiher.

The Nonnenmattweiher is a dammed lake with a moor or peat island. It is located in the nature reserve of the same name in the southern Black Forest between Badenweiler and Schönau. The lake lies on the eastern slopes of the Köhlgarten massif at about 915 m above sea level and is almost 325 m long, 200 m wide and up to 7 m deep. (3.7 hectares).

There are numerous rare plants around and on the lake. There are the species milkwort and arnica, which are on the red list of endangered species in Germany. A special feature is the peat island floating on the water, which has a vegetation of flat and transitional moors. Entering the island is prohibited. Therefore, the northern half of the lake is separated from the southern part with a peat island by a barrier made of floating logs. Swimming is only allowed in the northern part and without the large peat island in the middle, the lake has 3.1 hectares.

In the heat of August the perfect place to rest ❤️.
