• Chocos - Sepia Officinalis

    27. november 2025, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Tonight we had barbecue on the balcony for the last time, this time we prepared chocos.

This variety of cuttlefish has a more intense flavor than other varieties caught in other fishing grounds. It is a decapod cephalopod mollusk, meaning it has ten arms. It is also known as sepia.

It is caught year-round using various fishing methods: cuttlefish pots, gillnets, trawls, and trawls such as purse seines or beach seines.

It lives on the bottom of shallow seas in sandy or sedimentary areas, where it partially buries itself, also feeding on aquatic plants and algae. It inhabits areas near the coast down to 150 meters deep.

It feeds on fish, mollusks, and crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp.

Its ink, instead of being black like that of squid, is sepia-colored, hence its name. It is very well adapted to swimming in midwater, an activity it practices intensely, always in a horizontal position.
