Yes! I did it! 💪

I actually wanted to take a taxi from the bus station to the ferry terminal, but there weren't any. So I had to walk 20 minutes with all my workation luggage. And it was tight.

Heidrun was already waiting at the ferry terminal and wanted to buy tickets, but that only worked with ID. The online shop was already closed.

But I did it 😊, I rolled through the city with the whole traveling circus 🎪 at 26° and when I got to Heidrun's I was very warm.

Now we are sitting on the ferry ⛴️ to San Sebastián de La Gomera with a pleasant breeze. 🌞🌊Читать далее

My temporary home

Yesterday was a really exhausting day. Not only the quick walk to the ferry, but also picking up the rental car and the big shopping trip really drained me. I left home at a quater past 5 am and arrived 8 pm here - 15 hours - pretty long for a location within Europe.

Then driving for over an hour through the laurel forest with 1000 switchbacks, across the whole island and unloading the car in the dark didn't make it any better.

But now I've arrived and this trip was definitely worth it. Just look at that! This will be my home for the next two months and I'm looking forward to walking down the mountain every day and throwing myself into the waves.Читать далее

Vallehermoso

Today we drove to Vallehermoso, I know the place pretty well, I've been there a few times, even for longer.

We sat in the Bar Central, of course, and as usual there was barraquito and tortilla for me, this time also with some tuna salad. Very tasty everything...

I had to go to the post office to buy stamps - you might remember, it's always a hassle to get stamps in time, so I tokk the chance.

It only opens in the mornings until 11:30. and there was only one guy in front of me. But nevertheless I waited for over half an hour. Because... well, why? Because it's Spain.

We then did some shopping, having food is always better than needing food.

Whenever I'm in Vallehermoso, I feel very comfortable. It's cooler and cloudier than the southwest coast, but the village is firmly in Spanish hands. Now and then you see hikers drinking coffee waiting for the bus, but otherwise few tourists find their way here.

Everything takes time, in the post office as well as at the cheese counter. Emergency braking, so to speak. Heidrun wasn't so enthusiastic, she had an upset stomach today.

I will definitely go shopping here, it is the closest store, 30 minutes away and I love Vallehermoso and the Bar Central ❤️.Читать далее

Restaurante Los Chorros de Epina

I know this restaurant already.

When I stayed in Vallehermoso before, it was a good opportunity to watch the sunset there while having dinner.

Today we stopped at this restaurant as we were almost driving by and and I wanted to show it to Heidrun.

The kitchen is basic but the owner is wonderful and the view amazing. Especially for a sundowner 🌄.

But also today when Vallehermoso was cloudy, we sat in the clouds and looked down the valley where we live. Well and guess, it was sunny there 😉.

For sure you know... I picked a place with microclimate. Our balcony is almost always sunny, only in the morning it takes until 10:30 until the sun rises over the mountain. The weather is as good as in Valley Gran Rey but no annoying German tourists 🤣.

So my balcony seems to be the best choice but anyways it will visit this restaurant from time to time because I like the panoramic view 😍.Читать далее

Lunch swimmig

There are high waves here at the moment, some beaches in the Canary Islands are closed. 🌊🌊🌊

So swimming is difficult in Alojera, because there is no sandy beach here, but a pebble beach and the pebbles have a very unfortunate big size.

Luckily we have a small natural swimming pool on the beach next to the pier, which is flooded at high tide.

My sunset balcony

2,5 hours more daylight, not to mention sunlight…

At the moment I can't get enough of my balcony. For the last 3 days I've been sitting in pole position with a view of the cliffs and the sea, working all day. My colleagues only ask me things like: Really, again? And I turn my back to the sun so I don't get sunburnt. Of course, the sunset at the end of the day is a must.

From tomorrow I have 4 days off, then I'll say goodbye to my balcony every now and then and cruise around the island 🏝️.Читать далее

I live in Alojera at the moment. It is a small town of 430 inhabitants belonging to the municipality of Vallehermoso. It covers the Valle Barranco del Mono and its tributaries, at the head of which is the step of the central plateau of the island with a large difference in level between Lomo del Carretón and La Asomada.

I love this valley and although it looks northern on the map, if you look closely at the satellite map, you can see the difference in vegetation compared to the northern valleys like vallehermoso.

So due to its special geographical location, Valle Barranco del Mono is a valley in the north with comparatively many hours of sunshine per year.

This is why I picked it, wonderful warm, much sun and not many tourist, they are all sitting in Valle Gran Rey 😉.Читать далее

Restaurante Prisma

There is not much infrastructure to see down in Alojera beach.

A few houses where you can also rent rooms, the pier, the saltwater pool and the Prisma restaurant.

It is located in a narrow alley, because everything is narrow here. A few tables are set up in the alley and the view opens up to the sea.

On the corner of the pier, the men from the village have their own little personal table and enjoy themselves there with tinto de verrano, cerveza or cortado.

The boats are pulled up on the stairs and time drags like chewing gum into the sunny day.

The quality is very good and the prices are reasonable. It is open from 12:30 to 16:30 and 18:00 to 21:00 except on Wednesdays.

Playa del Inglés

Since the 1970s, Playa del Inglés in Valle Gran Rey has been a legend for the hippie and alternative movement.

Unlike other nudist and unspoiled beaches, this one is close to apartments, restaurants, entertainment venues and other services. There is even a sports centre. So you will find caravans on the parking lot, a smell of urine on you way to the ocean and a bunch of naked old hippies. 🤣

Located at the southwestern end of the Valle Gran Rey, this beach normally has the virtue of offering a generally calm ocean. This time of course it was different, and so you had to be careful of the waves, but its still calm waters compared to other wild coves.

The guarantee of sunshine, its large size at low tide, the liberal atmosphere of this beach in the south and the good infrastructure attracts quite some people, so if you are looking for loneliness, this should be NOT your choice 😂.Читать далее

Taguluche

Today we drove to Taguluche, an idyllically situated village in the Barranco of the same name. It nestles against the ridge of La Merica.

The fertile valley, which is located south of Alojera, is separated from the higher villages by an idyllic winding road.

The place used to be one of the most important agricultural regions on La Gomera. Tomato cultivation in particular was particularly productive here. Not only was the island itself supplied with tomatoes, there were also enough left for export, which were shipped directly from Taguluche.

Over time, tomato cultivation lost importance because it was no longer possible to keep up with the big competitors from outside.

As a result, many locals moved to other regions. The remaining residents now enjoy the peace and quiet and farm privately.

The beach at Taguluche can be reached via a 20-minute descent on a small hiking trail.

Swimming is expressly not recommended here, as dangerous undercurrents and jagged rocks in the water can put swimmers in great danger.

Next to the small, very pretty church in the village there is a beautiful picnic area with a great view and a grill, oven, stone washbasin, large tables and public toilet.

There is also a restaurant, quite large for the small place, with a terrace and a magnificent view of the sea, which serves local dishes but was unfortunately closed today.Читать далее

Roque de Agando

Roque de Agando is a prominent rock formation on the island of La Gomera. It is one of La Gomera's most striking features and is frequently used as a symbol for the island.

Roque Agando is the most prominent of a group of volcanic plugs called simply Los Roques, near the centre of the island. The others are named Roque Ojila and Roque Zarcita, and sometimes Roque Carmona and Roque Las Lajas are also included. It rises directly above the main road between the island's capital San Sebastián and Garajonay National Park in the centre, which makes it a popular tourist sight.

The summit is not accessible by foot. During the 20th century, some easy rock-climbing routes were established on the peak, but climbing is now banned there, and hiking is restricted to established paths in its vicinity, as it forms part of a protected area.Читать далее

Fresh water spring

As always, I went looking for a source of fresh water and found a spring. Not only one, I found two... Located in a wonderful spot with an awesome view.

Now I'm curious to see what quality the water is and how the tea tastes with it.

Guarapo & palm honey

Palm honey, a typical product of the island, is also noteworthy. Here in my valley they grow a lot of palms to extract guarapo from it, to produce palm honey.

The procedure for obtaining palm honey is as follows:

- First, the palm is peeled from the top to extract the sap.

- After a while, the sap begins to flow through a reed split in half and falls into the bucket provided for this purpose.

- The next day, before the sun rises, the bucket is lowered from the palm tree and taken to a cauldron where it will be heated.

- After about two hours, the guarapo (palm sap) begins to boil and caramelizes as it loses moisture, until it reaches a point where it becomes the well-known palm honey.

-At the end of the season, the palm is left to rest for at least five years. After this time, the extraction process can be repeated again.

In the town you can visit the Casa de la Miel de Palma, an Interpretation Centre where you can learn about the Canary Island palm and the guarapeo culture.Читать далее

El Cercado

Today we actually wanted to go hiking, but as it was raining up in the laurel forest, we drove to El Cercado.

The small village is located south of the Garajonay National Park and west of Chipude. The inconspicuous village with its mostly single-storey stone houses is the pottery village of La Gomera par excellence.

Three pottery studios still practice the traditional pottery art of the Gomeran natives here today. This is characterized by the fact that it is made freehand without a potter's wheel. In their shops you can see the three potters at work almost every day and buy one or two of their works.

The ceramics of El Cercado get their specific shine from rubbing with Siena red clay. It is then fired in a wood-fired stone oven.

There is also a small museum in the village, where the history of pottery in the village is told and the production process is explained in detail.

Since my love is a woodturner, I have a lot of bowls and dishes made of wood, so I did not buy any pottery here.Читать далее

La Casa de la Playa

Today we went swimming at Playa de La Calera and then went to eat at La Casa de la Playa.

The fish was delicious and inexpensive, I had grilled scorpion fish and cheese croquette filled with guava.

You can enjoy the sunset from the restaurant and listen to the drummers - a clear recommendation!

The restaurant closes at 8pm, but since we still had to drive through the serpentines afterwards, it worked out really well for us ❤️.Читать далее

Playa de La Calera

La Calera and La Puntilla beaches form the main beach in Valle Gran Rey and are about one kilometre long. They surround the village, meaning there are various places where you can watch the sunset.

You can watch the sunset right by the sea, either on your beach towel or on one of the many terrace bars.

The sunset at La Calera beach is one of the most popular on the island and is known among hippies all over the world. In winter, drums and other instruments sound at sunset. and sometimes fire shows are held later on the sand in front of the old Casa Maria bar.Читать далее

Today we had an awesome clear view, so we went to the Anbrante viewpoint.

At first glance, Abrante looks like an ordinary viewing platform. However, at the top of the cliff in the north of La Gomera where it is located, visitors do not look down into the precipice, but rather 'float' above it. From the end of the viewing platform comes a seven-metre-long cantilever with a glass floor, which keeps anyone brave enough to walk on it suspended in the air, contemplating a typical rural landscape of the Canary Islands.

Four hundred metres below, and in the absence of clouds, you can see the small valley of Agulo, with its clusters of houses and agricultural terraces, wedged between almost vertical cliffs and open to the Atlantic Ocean. In the distance, you can see Tenerife.

The view from Agulo down there up to Abrate is also very interesting because then you can see how far the cantilever extends into nothingness 😱.Читать далее
