    Flat tire

    30 октября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Ok, we had some fun 🤪.

A spare wheel was under the car and it had enough pressure, but the nut was rusted solid.

Luckily we had bikes with us and the workshop was only 8 minutes away by bike to borrow a proper pair of pliers and a good wrench.

Now the spare wheel is on and only the tire has to be repaired tomorrow.

Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz

    31 октября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The Mercado Central de Cádiz is located on the Plaza de Abastos which was designed by Torcuato Benjumeda. It consists of a hall in the middle and a wall all around it. Shops or stalls can be found in the wall from the inside, with doric columns between the shops. Between the outer wall with the shops and the hall in the middle there is 4-5 meters of uncovered space, a kind of atrium.

It is a lively market with stalls for fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, household items and more, as well as many standing tables for eating. The fish market is in the hall in the middle, and there are vegetable stalls at all four corners of the fish hall. Strange but true. Around the fish hall in the outside walls there are all kinds of food stalls and also many stalls with ready meals. There are standing tables in the atrium on two sides of the fish hall, the other two sides have no standing tables.

There are also bar stools at the standing tables and if you manage to get hold of an empty standing table you can consider yourself lucky. The standing tables belong to each stall and you have to buy your drinks there. You can get the food from anywhere, only one person has to stay at the table at a time so that it doesn't get lost.

It is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. except of Sunday only from 12 to 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday a hour longer in the evening.

If you want to dive into market life or eat through the food specialities of Cádiz, go there!

    Cala Del Tío Juan Medina

    31 октября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today I spent the afternoon at Cala Del Tío Juan Medina.

This is a beach near the Faro Cabo Roche. It's known for its natural beauty, clear water, and expansive sandy area. The beach stretches for 150 meters and has an average width of 50 meters.

Located in a pristine setting, the beach often has relatively high waves, reaching between 2 and 3 meters, making it particularly appealing to nature lovers. There are no facilities such as restrooms, beach bars, or showers, but trash cans are provided next to the road.

Cala Del Tío Juan Medina is usually not crowded, and right now it's practically deserted. Perfect for me!

    The beach bars are leaving

    2 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

I noticed it the other day near my favorite beach bar...

Where I always park my scooter there was a beach bar a week ago, 2 days ago it was gone.

Today it's the same again: where a week ago there was still the hustle and bustle of the beach bar, today you can only find sand.

If you ask me, they have moved with the birds to the south and will come back in spring. 🤪

    Mercado de pescado de Cádiz

    3 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

In the middle of the Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz, there's a large hall – the fish market. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

There's an incredible selection of fish, all incredibly fresh. It didn't make much sense for us to buy fish there, as we would have had to transport it to Conil in the heat. We buy our fish at the market in Conil. However, if you're ever in Cádiz, you shouldn't miss the fish market.

Here you can find all the vendors who have a stall at the Cádiz fish market: https://share.google/lPchQ4lFnPdYkXbgn

    Iglesia de Santa Catalina

    4 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

The Iglesia de Santa Catalina is dating back to 1411, built by the Guzmán family at the request of the local people. It was originally in the Mudejar style .

The Church of Santa Catalina has always been the main church in Conil de la Frontera. Located just a few metres from the Guzmán Tower, in the heart of the town.

This building with three parallel naves through pointed arches has undergone numerous transformations throughout history, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, most notably the main altar and bell tower.

A cemetery was added next to the church in 1800, giving it its current appearance a reflection of the transformations undergone in the 19th century.

In 1930, it was closed for worship due to its poor state of preservation following the latest renovations. In 1993, it passed into municipal hands, where it was converted into a Tourist Interpretation Center. The building has been declared a Cultural Heritage Site.

Sala Expositiva del Mar y la Almadraba

    5 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

The SEMA is a complex of 15th-century buildings (built by the Duke of Medina Sidonia between 1540 and 1560) dedicated to the tuna fishing industry.

During the fishing season, tuna were butchered here, salted, and placed in barrels for sale. At the end of the season, the Chanca was transformed into a large warehouse for equipment and other tools used in the tuna fishing operation, such as barges, buoys, anchors, and nets.

It included offices, employee housing, kitchens, stables, haylofts, and granaries. A prominent feature is a large building known as the "Salt Vault," used to store salt, a crucial ingredient for preserving tuna.

Spanning over 7,000 square meters, the Chanca now houses an Interpretation and Documentation Center highlighting the cultural and historical ties between Conil, the sea, and the tuna fishing industry, as well as the José Velarde Municipal Library. Its large central courtyard hosts cultural programs throughout the year.

The Interpretation and Documentation Center comprises two buildings: a former equipment warehouse and a salt storage facility. Here, visitors can find archaeological remains that help to understand the origins of the municipality, models of different fishing methods, and videos explaining traditional fishing techniques using the almadraba net.

This center is built with wonderful ideas and a lot of love ❤️.

Playa de Zahora & Amarna Zahora

    6 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Zahora is a small, almost insignificant coastal settlement that has grown considerably in recent years due to the tourism boom in the area. The population of Zahora is approximately 480 inhabitants.

The beach stretches for about 3 kilometers, has golden sand and the end closest to the tombolo (Trafalgar) is undeveloped, featuring a large dune system with abundant vegetation. To the northeast, villas and beach bars form the most popular stretch of beach.

The beach can be divided according to this criterion into two sections, the first from the mouth of the San Ambrosio stream, a seasonal stream that acts as a boundary with the municipal area of Vejer de la Frontera , to the beginning of the tombolo of the Trafalgar Lighthouse and a second section of beach free of constructions and dominated by the natural dynamics of the special sand structure that makes it up, with a large amount of vegetation and a developed dune system, up to the Mangueta beach.

Its southern end is practically deserted even in summer, making it an attractive place for strolling, getting lost among its dunes, or practicing nudism.

At the northern end you can find the restaurant Amarna Zahora. The roof looks like an upside-down boat and in season it is a popular location. However, the restaurant will be closed from the beginning of October, so no carajillo for me today 😉.

You probably know that when you're super in the mood for something sweet. On the way back from Zahora we felt the same way today.

Since I had recently come across a pastry shop while browsing through the city map, I of course had an idea how we could get something sweet. So we went to the Pastelería Canela & Miel and didn't regret it 😍😋.

    Hospicio de la Misericordia

    7 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This large baroque building, erected between 1775-1779, is the only remaining example of a charitable institution in Conil.

Don Sebastian Sanchez Franco, Count of the Five Towers and rich merchant of the Indies, commissioned its construction in order to provide accommodation for thirty poor families.

The building consists of a central chapel and two attached courtyards where thirty rooms are located. Inside the chapel there is a sculpture of the "Virgen de la Misericordia", which dates back to the end of the 18th century.

It is made of multi-coloured wood and is part of the Sevillian school. In the upper part of the altarpiece of the main altar we can see the statue of the crucified Christ, of Filipino origin, which is made of ivory. In the sacristy there is a magnificent painting that illustrates "The Flight into Egypt"; it is the work of the Andalusian baroque school of the 17th century.

I stumbled over it by accident and haven't been inside yet.

    Torre de Guzmán

    8 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The Torre de Guzmán is located in the heart of Conil and was built by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán between 1300 and 1307.nIt was further reinforced in 1411.

The tower was designed to prevent enemies from invading the city. Together with many other towers, also built by de Guzmán, it forms a long defensive line along the Costa de la Luz.

Among the enemies of Cádiz's coast were pirates and barbarians. Due to tuna fishing, Conil was particularly threatened by conquerors, as it represented a strategically important point for anglers due to the tuna movement from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

The tower was built in the Gothic style and is now part of Conil's coat of arms.

It is open to the public and offers fantastic views of the Atlantic, Conil, and the entire La Janda region.

During the summer months it is open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00.

    Restaurante La Ola

    9 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

This restaurant is right next to my favorite beach bar.

So far, I've only been here for a coffee once, when I walked into the weever. This time I went there for dinner during the sunset.

The food was delicious, but at €90 it wasn't cheap. Of course, you're not just paying for the quality, but also for the location with your feet in the sand right by the sea.

I might go again, as they also have paella, although it's not served outside, only inside, in a slightly elevated, enclosed glass-fronted area. I can certainly understand that, because sand in your rice is no fun at all.

All in all a great experience! 😋

    Puerta de la Villa

    10 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The Puerta de la Villa is an ancient medieval wall , which serves as an entrance to the old town of Conil.

It was formerly called puerta de Vejer, as it was where the crossing to the neighboring town began. It is the only one of the four entrance gates to the town that still has its walls.

It dates back to 1502 when Duke Don Juan de Guzmán ordered the walling of Conil due to the danger of being attacked by the Arabs. In the beginning it consisted of an upper and a lower floor, which was the starting point of the stairs that reached the surveillance corridors that ran through the walled place .

Finally, it has been classified as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) since June 1985.

Casa del Conde de las Cinco Torres

    11 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This building is the most outstanding private building in Conil and was built in 1779 by Don Sebastián Sánchez Franco, Count of the Five Towers, a merchant of the Indies in the city of Cádiz, and a native of this town.

At that time, summer residences were fashionable among the bourgeoisie, hence the number of houses of this style in the area.

Baroque in style, it resembles the houses of Cadiz, having a cistern to collect rainwater, something unusual in this town, as most had a well.

In Conil it is known as "Casa del Peoro" the “House of Worst” of D. Diego Muñoz Rodríguez, wealthy owner who in 1859 bought the house from D. José Luis Feduchy y Martí, Count of the Cinco Torres at that time.

    The rain is coming

    12 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

As a trained meteorologist, I still have a soft spot for clouds, geopotentiac maps and fronts.

My weather forecasts are quite reliable and from tomorrow on it will rain for 3-4 days.

Since I don't have to work today, my thoughts were clear: Where does the wind come from? Let's go swimming in a small bay away from the wind.

So we spent a wonderful summer and swimming day at Cala del Tio Juan Medina. The waves were awesome! ❤️

I would say we did everything right 😍.

    Stormy weather in Cádiz

    14 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Since it rained almost all day yesterday and it doesn't look any different tomorrow, we took the bus to Cádiz today.

We were lucky with the weather, because it rained on the way to the bus, but when we arrived, the sun was shining.

Later in the day it poured down again for 20 minutes when we sat for a wine at the market under the roof, but that didn't bother us.

When we sat in the bus on the way back it got worse again, so we adapted that well, because in Cádiz itself we had almost no rain and also a lot of blue sky and sunshine 😊.

In short: a perfectly used rainy day!

I don't need to write anything about Cádiz, you will find a whole trip to it in 2024 🤪: https://findpenguins.com/6lu4a7l8tf86u/trip/658…

    Bocatería Los Patios

    14 ноября 2025 г., Испания ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

The Bocatería Los Patios is not easy to find. It is located in the courtyard of a residential complex in the old town of Cádiz.
By chance, no one gets lost here.

I had found the Bocatería on the map, when I was here at the foreign language school for 2 weeks in 2024. At that time I hadn't managed to stop here, this time I wanted to make up for it.

The Bocatería consists only of the kitchen and a very small anteroom with a counter. You can't sit here and eating in the courtyard is not allowed.

There are all kinds of bocadillos. with egg, ham, bacon, tomatoes, tuna, salmon and a thousand other vegetables and things and they are quite tasty 😋.

It's a walk-in for freshly made bocadillos, so to speak 🤪.
