    Rain in Greece?!?

    15 października 2024, Niemcy ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Today my brother sent me his trip in FindPenguins. He and his wife have been traveling around the Peloponnese since the beginning of October.

There was a lot of rain in the photos - what a shock 😱. Of course I had to look at the weather forecast straight away. All clear, everything is fine. Phew! 😥

But still two weeks to go...

  • The postcard is ready

    26 października 2024, Niemcy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The postcard 📯is ready and the subtenants 🏡 have been found, the rent and the deposit have already been transferred.

This weekend I will once again enjoy the northern German autumn sun 🍁🌞 in the hanging chair and help Rainer trim the hedge. Luckily, next week only has three working days, so I have Thursday and Friday to do all the preparations.

The apartment has to be made ready for subletting and the balcony has to be made winter-proof 🌺🌿🪴. Of course I still have to pack, which is a bit more work with my home office stuff 💻⌨️🐭🖥️. But it's already become routine.

Next Saturday I will be off to the island 🏝️ and I'm really looking forward to a month of swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ in the sea 🌊 twice a day and working with a view of the waves and the sunset 🌅 .

  • Hungry!

    2 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

I just quickly unloaded the luggage and put the groceries in the fridge. On the way I went briefly shopping in the village shop in Charakas.

Of course, Manolis' mother has packed the fridge full again and tonight she will certainly bring down dinner again. 😋

In any case, I had to go to the taverna for sardines with fresh tomatoes. 😍

  • My private beach

    2 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I've been looking forward to this beach for a few months.

When I looked out to the ocean in Croatia, I thought: what a pity that I'm only here by the sea for two weeks, but then I remembered that I'm going to go swimming on this very beach twice a day for the whole of November.

    And today I started. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Getting into the routine

    3 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

This morning I checked out the morning swimming routine and now I‘m checking out the breakfast routine.

Swimming seems to be great at 7:30, so I will leave for my private beach at 7:15 and maybe stay there for up to 1,5 hours. So I will be back at 9:15 which gives me 15 minutes to shower and I can start work at 9:30, which is 8:30 German time. That sounds pretty perfect and works out almost all days except Wednesday when I have to start at 8:00 German time.

For breakfast everything is already in place thanks to Manolis‘ mom and the small village shop where I dropped by yesterday. The olives 🫒 , the feta, the tomatoes 🍅 and the cucumbers 🥒 are awesome 🤩. not to forget taramas 😋.

  • My personal vulture

    4 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Last year I only watched the vultures in the air but this time I have one right in front of my balcony. 🥰

He sat there all day. He sat there when I arrived and he sat there when I went to bed. My personal vulture 🤣. Czytaj więcej

  • North wind - Welcome to the show

    5 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

At the moment we have a northerly wind, and occasionally a northwesterly wind. That doesn't happen very often.

The wind comes from the same high pressure area that is currently causing fog and clouds in northern Germany.

When the wind is northerly, it is particularly interesting to walk along the coast here, because the wind comes down over the mountain and creates turbulence on the surface of the water.

When I get up in the morning to go swimming, this is exactly the path I take until I reach my private bay. I leave at 7:30 and return shortly after nine, it usually takes me 15 minutes each way.

Today it took me quite a long time to walk, because I was watching all the little whirlwinds and flurries on the surface of the water. What a spectacle! 🤩

  • My workplace

    6 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Of course, as always, I'll show you my workplace. This is it.

Nothing has changed in terms of equipment at the moment. I'm very happy with it: my laptop, my EasyRiser for the laptop, an external monitor, external mouse and keyboard, my headset with a foam pad on the microphone to suppress wind noise, and a small USB hub.

I also still have a sun hat with me, because last year it turned out that parasols aren't very practical in windy conditions. 🤪🤣

I always find boxes on site or stack pots to get the external monitor to the same height as the laptop.

Happy working with my workation equipment!

  • Mama Manolis

    7 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I finally have some time to write about my arrival. I arrived last Saturday and the key was in the key box outside the house.

I already know the apartment, I was here last year at the same time for a month's workation. I haven't gone to the same place for vacation since I was a child. This time I made an exception because I was able to find my center so wonderfully here.

The secluded beach 15 minutes walk away, the beautiful rocky coast, the warm sea, the peace and quiet in this small village, the balcony that is perfect for doing yoga with a view of the sea.

In other words, I know the place, I know this apartment and I know the landlord Manolis and his parents. They own the apartment above and spend some time there from time to time.

When I arrived this time, it was like last time: fresh eggs in the fridge, orange juice, fruit, bread, biscuits, coffee, wine, tea, liquor, olive oil, milk, vinegar, and so on. Everything prepared for me. And the best part: in the evening, Manolis' mother brought down a whole casserole dish filled with freshly stuffed vegetables, and it was still a little warm.

Thank you Mama Manolis - What a welcome!

  • Tris Ekklisies

    8 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Tris Ekklisies (three churches) is a remote seaside village located 64 km south of Heraklion, in the middle of the wild and inhospitable landscape of the Asterousia Mountains. The area, one of the most remote in Crete, is difficult to access but (as you have already seen) has some amazing beaches. To reach Tris Ekklisies you drive about 10 km down a serpentine road from the village of Paranymfi.

This road leads through the mountains of Asterousia. Half a kilometer after Paranymfi, you have a breathtaking view of the Libyan Sea and Tris Ekklisies.

In summer there is a small supermarket here, now in autumn it is closed. But three times a week a vegetable truck comes down the serpentines to the beach and stands there for a while so that the few villagers can buy their vegetables. To let everyone know that the truck is there, it plays loud music, but check out the footage yourself.

In short: Tris Ekklisies is just wonderful! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Asterousia Mountains

    9 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

To get to Tris Ekklisies, I have to drive through the Asterousia Mountains. This is a barren mountain range with only small villages and chapels everywhere. The mountain range separates the Messara Plain from the Libyan Sea.

Roughly speaking, the low mountain range is located in the south of the island in the Heraklion regional district, east of the beach of Matala. The mountain range reaches a height of up to 1231 m with Mount Kofinas.

There are many gorges in the mountain range, the most important being the Agiofarango, named after the monasticism that was practiced in the past in the countless small caves along both sides of it. To the east of the mountain range is the palm forest of Agios Nikitas with Theophrastus palms (Cretan date palm); it is considered the third largest palm forest in Crete.

The area of Asterousia, which covers an area of 27.27 square kilometres from Agiofarango to Kokkinos Pyrgos, has been included in the Natura 2000 network because the area is of ecological and archaeological importance.

I love driving from the plain through the mountains and then looking out over the sea from above and seeing Tris Ekklisies below. 😍

I will make you a short film of the serpentines soon. 🤗

  • Fish, sun and ocean

    9 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

At the moment the water is very clear. The wind has also become a little less and therefore the sea and the weather are very suitable for snorkeling.

That's why I watched fish 🐟🤿🐠 today, of course on my private beach. 🤩

So I was here on the beach until 4:30 p.m., swam and snorkeled and then made my way home to grill delicious vegetables in the oven.

What a wonderful Saturday! And now I enjoy my dinner ❤️.

  • What I always bring…

    11 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

When I go on a workation and am away from home for one or two months, it is usually in autumn or winter. I am usually far south in Europe and that is where and when the oranges are harvested. 🍊 🍊 🍊

I love freshly squeezed orange juice, 🍊 🥤 so I drink at least one glass a day. When my sweetheart comes over, that's two. The amount of orange peel I produce is immense and my wrists are put to the test.

That's why I always have my electric orange press with me. What I always have with me is my Opinel - I need a good knife 🔪 for cooking!

  • My private bakery 😉

    12 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today I worked from the café again, or more precisely from the bakery, *my* bakery 😉, in the small mountain village.

The ancient Greeks there eye me when I sit there with my headphones on and talk into the air. He was in the Ruhr area from 72-76, one of them tells me and invites me to the Greek café.

The boss brings out two more biscuits. I am very happy and thank him. The biscuits are over 1000 years old, says the boss. I hope the recipe, not the biscuits, I say. He laughs loudly.

He and the ancient Greeks already know me well and as we say goodbye the boss says: See you tomorrow!

And today was a very special day because today he showed me his bakery. He delivers not only all over Crete, but also abroad. ❤️

  • Heraklion

    13 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today I went to Heraklion, I actually wanted to buy a set of knitting needles 🧶 in sizes 6 and 7 - but neither shop had them.

Of course I strolled through the old town and sat down in a café by the sea. A nice city I must say. I would have to spend a bit more time here to be able to judge it conclusively, but at first glance I still like it as much as I did a few years ago.

But I can't sit here much longer because I've come to pick up my sweetheart from the airport. 🤩

Today I took the day off because Rainer arrived yesterday.

Of course we walked to the private beach first thing in the morning. At some point it got too hot for us and we settled down on the balcony for brunch for 2 hours.

Then we walked to the beach again to look at the fish and splash in the waves.

    A midsummer day. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Moíres

    16 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

With over 6,000 inhabitants, Moíres or Mires is the largest town in the fertile Messara Plain and the administrative center of the municipality of Festos. Yes, that's right, Festos, the one with the archaeological site of Phaistos.

There is a farmers market in Mires on Saturdays and you can find everything there. So off we went to Mires and packed the car full of goodies.

I actually wanted to eat Loukoumades, but my favorite Loukoumades café was closed. So we stopped by our favorite butcher, who grills in the square in front together with the tavern next door.

That's a great activity for a Saturday, although I'm always happy to be able to leave the hustle and bustle behind me at some point and drive back down the winding roads to my sleepy little coastal village. 😍

So here I am back again, the fridge is full and for sure I went swimming at my private beach 🏊.

  • Messara Plain & Asterousia Mountains

    17 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today the weather was mixed, so we went on a tour through the Messara Plain and the Asterousia Mountains. The tour was about 100km long and breathtaking.

The Messara Plain (Greek Πεδιάδα Μεσαράς) is a lowland in the south of the island. It is located mainly 45 kilometers south of the city of Heraklion and the largest towns are Mires and Tymbaki.

In the northwest lies the Ida Mountains, which rise to a height of 2456 meters. In the south the plain is separated from the southern Mediterranean by the Asterousia Mountains, which are up to 1231 meters high. In the west the plain borders the Mediterranean.

The plain is almost 50 kilometers long, up to eight kilometers wide and has an area of over 150 km². It slopes down from a height of 250 meters in the east to the Mediterranean in the west.

The Geropotamos River flows through the fertile plain, supplying water for numerous cultivated areas, making intensive agriculture possible in this rain-poor area.

The region's main source of income is olive cultivation. The trees are irrigated by local wells. Vegetables and other crops are grown on the plain at the edge of the river (often in greenhouses or on artificially irrigated areas). The edges of the plain are quite densely populated compared to other drier regions of Crete.

The historical archaeological sites of Gortyn and Phaistos are also located here.

We set off on a whim, sipped a coffee here and there or ate a pastry, watched animals, found strange windmills and visited small villages.

We were back home safe and sound by sunset, full of new impressions. I'll write more about the various things we found and encountered along the way later.

    What a wonderful day 😍.

  • Goat accident

    18 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I don't know if you knew, but I grew up in Black Forest on the edge of the forest with goats.

I went into the mountain with my goats almost every day, although there were only two of them. So I observed goats pretty often and well.

Today I witnessed a goat fall from the cliffs on the beach - but check out the footage yourself. I have never seen anything like that before and luckily it was only a few meters high. Nothing happened to the goat and it happily hopped on.

Lucky for the goat, otherwise the vultures would have been lucky.

  • Lendas

    19 listopada 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Lendas is a town with around 80 inhabitants on the south coast of Crete, west of Tris Ekklisies. The (folk) etymology derives the name from the ancient Greek word for lion, because the shape of this animal can be seen in the headland offshore.

In the 1980s, Lendas was a popular destination for backpackers, who stayed as tolerated wild campers primarily in the bay west of the town. Today the town of Dytiko stands on the same spot. I'm sure some of them are still around and I don't want to meet them 🤪.

We drove past Lendas on our Messara tour. Rainer had wintered there a few years ago and I wanted to see if it would be suitable for me to winter there too.

In short: intended for others, not for me 🤣. Too many tavernas (at least 5), too many tourists (at least 5), too many greenhouses and too easy to get to to be original. So please other tourists: go there!

The stretch of coast is beautiful though. 🤩
