  • Cacao et Macarons

    22 April, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Cacao et Macarons is a chocolatier and pastry shop near the old harbor of La Rochelle. They offer a wide selection of handcrafted chocolates and candies.

Today I went there because Phine wanted to buy some chocolate for her host mother.

I took the opportunity to taste some of the macarons and theses are not as sweet as the other so I was pleasantly surprised ☺️.

  • Inlingua La Rochelle

    23 April, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

I'm now in my second week at the language school and have formed an opinion in the meantime. It is not the first language school where I spend 2 weeks as an adult and therefore I can compare.

It does not excrete very well. the lessons are tailored to teenagers, the rooms are too small and the groups too large.

making the age range of 15-80 doesn't help either, and if even the software in the language lab keeps crashing, learning isn't so much fun anymore.

But the teachers are committed and nice, but it doesn't travel out anymore 🤪.

However, La Rochelle is perfect for a language holiday and therefore it is not perfect overall, but I definitely have a very good time here.

  • Wing foil

    23 April, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

La Rochelle is a water sports paradise. You can't complain about wind or waves here. I already told you about the big marina.

Towards the harbour you also have a perfect location for windsurfing and windfoiling in direct neighborhood of the old city center.

On a few beaches you can also surf and definitely kayak along the coast. What also catches the eye are the long fine sand beaches.

But what is particularly captivating is the mix between the rough Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean glair of the city.

  • Le tout du cru

    23 April, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I have only tried two restaurants in these 2 weeks and this is one of them.

Just a few steps from the vielle marché, you can find Le Tout du Cru seafood dining. This small restaurant has become a favorite one.

The menu revolves around oysters, shellfish, and seafood platters sourced from the nearby Atlantic coast, alongside carefully selected regional specialties like charcuterie and cheeses. With up to a dozen varieties of oysters - from Île de Ré to Marennes - the emphasis is firmly on freshness and provenance rather than elaborate preparation.

The décor is rustic and slightly offbeat, and the restaurant’s small size makes reservations highly recommended, especially during busy seasons.

Critics highlight the quality of the seafood and the straightforward, honest cooking. Recognized by guides like Gault&Millau, Le Tout du Cru stands for its dedication to sourcing some of the best oysters and shellfish available and serving them with minimal fuss.

Well meanwhile there are probably a lot of tourists on the way (they offer a menu in englisch), the bread was too dry and the food nothing special and compared to Resto chez Titou (see my other article about a restaurant) the taste was boring and the atmosphere did not invite people to stay seated.

So: not recommend unless you only want to eat oysters.

  • Resto chez Titou

    23 April, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This is the other restaurant I tried out and I definitely preferred this one much more.

So Resto Chez Titou is one of those places that you’re lucky to stumble upon. It offers a warm, unpretentious atmosphere where the focus is squarely on good food and genuine hospitality rather than flashy presentation.

At one point the guy behind the counter spoke French a little too fast and when my answer didn't come out immediately, he thought about speaking English after a short irritated look. He did not because I said: Tu peux le dire un peu plus lentement encore une fois? The whole situation seemed as if it was strange to speak English with guests, so I assume they normally don't. This for example added to the my impression of authenticity.

The menu leans into classic French cuisine, often with a homemade touch that makes each dish feel personal. You’ll find hearty plates, carefully prepared, with flavors that reflect both tradition and a bit of creative flair.

What really sets it apart is the sense of authenticity - there’s no rush, no fuss, just a relaxed dining. I definitely can recommend this restaurant.

  • La Belle du Gabut

    24 April, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Set along the colorful waterfront district of La Rochelle, La Belle du Gabut embody the city’s alternative cultural spirit. More than just a venue, it is an evolving open-air hub where art, music, community life, and creativity converge - especially during the warmer months. A good place for enjoying a pastis 😋🍸.

The season at La Belle du Gabut opened in mid-April and is running through the summer, transforming the quay into a lively meeting point filled with concerts, themed evenings, and cultural events. Visitors can expect a relaxed, festive atmosphere with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and local engagement. Weekly programming often mixes live music, DJ sets, quizzes, karaoke, and social gatherings.

The venue also hosts specific events that reflect broader social and environmental themes. For example, this April, the event “La Belle Transition” highlights sustainability and urban agriculture, offering free activities open to the public and reinforcing the site’s role as a space for both entertainment and awareness.

Music remains central to the identity of La Belle du Gabut. Throughout the year, it appears in the city’s concert calendar as a stop for emerging and alternative acts, contributing to La Rochelle’s broader cultural scene, which includes major festivals like the Francofolies de La Rochelle.

  • Plage des Minimes

    24 April, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

My last après-midi at the Plage des Minimes. Later on I will look for a croque madame but for now I enjoy it here. I assume that I will come back later on for dinner at the beach...

I skipped the language school this afternoon to hang out here at the beach, where my apartment is located, and I once more think that I did everything right to stay in an apartment next to the white sandy beach 😍.Baca lagi

  • Croque Madame

    24 April, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    I haven't eaten that for decades 👀 ! Yeah, finally a real croque madame again ❤️❤️❤️ .

Everyone who comes from Hamburg thinks they know this, but people... What you get served in Hamburg as croque madame or croque monsieur has nothing to do with the French original, but is a boring topped and grilled baquette.

    THIS is a croque madame!

To be honest, it's a slightly modified version with Italian ham, instead of French and as a 2nd additional cheese (mozzarella), but it exactly looks like an original croque madame.

You could even prepare it in cast-iron shell-shaped molds, but I know that mainly from the 80s or earlier in France. I added so pictures to show you...

I also really liked the pub: Au Chabrot - close to the Vieux Port - definitely worth a visit. They pay attention to local and high-quality ingredients and prepare the food with a lot of love - friendly, happy, nice and funny people!

There also was even Breton cola, which was quite delicious and not so sweet.

So my suggestion: skip the big shit and go there!

  • Au revoir La Rochelle

    Semalam, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Bye bye La Rochelle, I would have liked to stay 2 weeks longer but then without language school, because the area is really very nice to explore by bike and the town has a sympathetic maritime southern European flair.

However, I am also very much looking forward to going home, because the lake is calling for swimming and everything is green and blooming at home - so Hamburg, I'm comiiiiiiiiing! (and anyway it's cloudy today 😝)
