    Tully Gorge National Park - Rafting

    Time for some action: Rafting in the Tully River. Actually we planned of doing a whole day of rating on the river but there are not enough tourists around so we had to join a half day tour. Anyway we had so much fun! On one of the rapids our boat flipped but we survived, even though it happened in crocodile territory :D
    After the tour we drove a little further up the river and found an amazing waterfall falling into the Tully. Really cool and of course I swam over to get a shower.

    Mal wieder Zeit für ein bisschen Action. Eigentlich wollten wir einen ganzen Tag auf dem Tully River raften, aber dafür gab es leider nicht genug Touristen. Daher ging es nur auf eine Halbtagestour, aber Spaß hatten wir dennoch ohne Ende. In einer der Stromschnellen hat es uns auch erwischt und wir kamen ohne Boot unten an (die GoPro war natürlich in diesem Moment aus). Es war eine nette Erfrischung, auch wenn es ein mulmiges Gefühl ist in einem Fluss zu kentern in dem Krokodile wohnen... Egal, so ist Australien nun mal! :D
    Nach der Tour sind wir noch etwas weiter flussaufwärts gefahren und haben noch einen coolen Wasserfall entdeckt der direkt in den Tully River fällt. Eine perfekte Möglichkeit für mich nochmal schwimmen zu gehen :) Keine Sorge: So weit flussaufwärts soll es auch angeblich keine Krokodile mehr geben, hat man uns zumindest gesagt und die Krokodil-Warnschilder waren auch nicht mehr dort. Also alles sicher zum Baden!    Leggi altro

    Paronella Park

    Next stop on the way south was the Paronella Park. A kind of amusement park of the 1930s which is a ruin now. It is located around the Meena Creek Falls and in the middle of the rainforest. Very cool to walk through the ruins of the park.

    Nächster Stop auf dem Weg gen Süden war der Paronella Park. Der Park würde in den 1930er Jahren von einem Spanier erbaut und war damals eine der Hauptattraktionen Australiens. Heute sind lediglich die Ruinen und der Wasserfall übrig. Ziemlich cool wie sich der Regenwald den Park zurückerobert.    Leggi altro

    Fitzroy Island

    From the tablelands we returned to Cairns for a last time to go to Fitzroy Island. It's an island just off the coast of Cairns. We hiked up to the highest point, had a fresh beer and relaxed on the beach. It was a nice day trip, just the snorkeling wasn't really good.

    Von den Tablelands ging es zurück nach Cairns, denn von hier aus wollten wir noch einen Ausflug nach Fitzroy Island machen. Fitzroy Island liegt direkt vor der Küste von Cairns und daher ein perfekter Tagesausflug. Zuerst ging es für uns zum höchsten Punkt der Insel bevor wir mit einem frisch gezapften Bier am Strand ein bisschen entspannt haben. Lediglich das Schnorcheln war nicht sonderlich schön verglichen mit dem was wir im äußeren Great Barrier Reef gesehen haben. Dennoch war es ein sehr schöner Tag auf Fitzroy Island.    Leggi altro

    Millstream Falls

    It is time for a waterfall tour today. We started with the Millstream Falls in the morning. Absolutely stunning these waterfalls and only two other people were around there :) Perfect start in the day!

    Heute steht unser Roadtrip im Zeichen der Wasserfälle. Am Morgen ging es zu den Millstream Falls. Richtig cool und fast keine anderen Menschen weit und breit. Perfekter Start in den Tag!    Leggi altro

    Atherton Tablelands

    The tablelands are nice so far. We have seen wildlife including a platypus, waterfalls, a crater lake and we swam in hot springs.

    Die ersten zwei Tage auf den Tablelands waren schon sehr nett. Wir haben Kängurus, Possums, Bandicoots und einen Platypus gesehen. Außerdem waren wir bei einem Kratersee und haben ein paar Wasserfälle besucht. Den Abend haben wir dann in natürlichen heißen Quellen verbracht.Leggi altro

    Mit dem Zug nach Kuranda

    Unfortunately Janine had a bad ear infection so we stopped traveling for a week, but now she feels much better and we are back on the road. From now on we will explore the Atherton Tablelands and we started with a scenic rail trip from Cairns to Kuranda. Kuranda is a small town with some nice markets, good food and a few waterfalls around.

    Leider hat sich Janine eine Ohrinfektion eingefangen, weshalb wir letzte Woche einen kurzen Reisestop einlegen mussten. Jetzt geht's ihr aber schon wieder viel besser und wir sind wieder unterwegs. In den kommenden Tagen entdecken wir die Atherton Tablelands. Los ging es mit einer netten Bahnfahrt von Cairns nach Kuranda, einem kleinen Ort auf den Tablelands. Der Zug ist ein reiner Touristenzug, aber dank Corona waren kaum andere Touris an Bord. Die Strecke ist zwar nur gute 30 km lang aber wirklich sehenswert. Highlights waren die Blicke auf die Stoney Creek Falls und die Küste von Cairns, sowie der Zwischenstopp bei den Barron Falls.     Crystal Cascades, Fairy Falls & Tubing

    Now we are back on our slow way down the coast. Before we start to explore the Atherton Tablelands we stopped in Cairns again to walk along the Crystal Cascades, swim in the Fairy Falls and to tube down the Mulgrave River. All in all a lot of fun!

    Jetzt sind wir offiziell schon wieder auf dem Weg gen Süden. Bevor wir die Küste aber kurzfristig verlassen um die Atherton Tablelands zu entdecken, haben wir nochmal in Cairns gehalten um die Crystal Cascades und die Fairy Falls zu besuchen. Danach ging es weiter zum Mulgrave River, den wir mit einem Reifen entlang getrieben sind.    Leggi altro

    Port Douglas - Crocs & Beach

    From the Daintree Rainforest we returned into the civilisation and stayed in Port Douglas for a couple of days to relax at a pool and to sleep in an air-conditioned room. It is a very small but nice city with a beautiful beach and lots of crocs around.

    Aus dem Daintree Regenwald ging es zurück in die Zivilisation. Es wurde Zeit mal wieder in einem klimatisierten Zimmer zu schlafen und ein bisschen Pool zu relaxen. Port Douglas ist eine sehr kleine Stadt aber schöne Stadt. Vor allem der Strand macht was her.
    Bevor wir ganz zurück in die Stadt fuhren haben wir uns noch auf die Suche nach Krokodilen gemacht und auch welche gefunden :)    Leggi altro

    Cape Tribulation - Bloomfield Track

    The weather was really good in the last weeks with almost no rain so we decided to explore the Bloomfield track. The track connects Cape Tribulation with Bloomfield and Cooktown in the north. It is not a proper road, but a track with some creek crossings and up to 32% steep parts. A great opportunity to unable the 4WD Mode to have some fun. At the end we have only drove half the track before we turned around but we found awesome viewpoints and lonely beaches. A great experience!

    In den letzten Wochen war das Wetter sehr gut und abgesehen von ein paar kurzen Schauern auch sehr trocken. Für uns die perfekte Möglichkeit den Bloomfield Track zu fahren. Der Track ist die einzige "Straße", die das Cape Tribulation mit Bloomfield und Cooktown verbindet. Bei Regen ist dieser Track nahezu unbefahrbar aber bei den jetzigen Bedingungen eine perfekte Möglichkeit den Allrad Antrieb von Balu auszufahren. Es war ziemlich cool und einsame Strände und nette Aussichtspunkte waren inklusive.    Leggi altro

    Cape Tribulation

    From Cairns we travelled up the coast to the Cape Tribulation. At Cape Tribulation the Great Barrier Reef meets the Daintree Tropic Rainforest - two unique UNESCO world heritage sites at one point. This scenery with perfect beaches, crystal clear water and the rainforest is just amazing! Only a swim isn't a good idea up here. Too many crocodiles and stingers in the waters around.

    Von Cairns ging der Roadtrip weiter gen Norden zum Cape Tribulation. Am Cape treffen das Great Barrier Reef und der tropische Regenwald aufeinander. Zwei UNESCO Welterbe Stätten an einem Ort bilden hier eine unfassbar schöne Landschaft. Lediglich schwimmen sollte man hier nicht, denn im Wasser und den Flüssen leben und hungrige Krokodile 🐊 und giftige Quallen. Aber zum gucken trotzdem schön genug.    Leggi altro

    Tag 5 - Cowtail Stingray

    Next day with another 4 dives in the reef. It is already our last full day on the boat, but one of the best dives so far we had! We visited the Troppos Dive Site located at the Norman Reef. It was the northernmost dive site we visited in the Great Barrier Reef. Here we saw again a lot of cool stuff including a cowtail stingray.

    Nächster Tag, die nächsten vier Tauchgänge. Es ist schon der letzte volle Tag auf dem Boot aber dennoch entdecken wir noch immer neue Tiere unter Wasser. Heute ging es zum nördlichsten Punkt unserer Taichsafari. Hier haben wir unter anderem einen Cowtail Stingray (auf deutsch: Federschwanz Rochen) entdeckt.    Leggi altro

    Tag 4 - Schildkröte Eric

    Today we met the coolest turtle ever! On board he is already known as turtle Eric. He is famous for coming very close to divers and he loves to eat cameras. We thought it is a joke of the crew until we met Eric today on a dive in the Saxon Reef (Magic Wall). It is probably the coolest turtle ever. We had so much fun diving around with him for a while. Absolutely amazing and our highlight so far!

    Heute haben wir Eric getroffen, die wahrscheinlich coolste Schildkröte der Welt. Bevor es los ging hat uns jemand von der Crew erzählt, dass Eric hier lebt und er es liebt Taucher und vor allem Kameras zu fressen. Wir dachten es sei ein Witz doch kaum waren wir abgetaucht war Eric auch schon da. Auf der Speisekarte heute: Meine GoPro :D Es war ein unglaubliches Erlebnis mit Eric so lange durch die Gegend zu tauchen. Bester Tauchgang bisher!    Leggi altro

    Tag 3 im Great Barrier Reef

    The next day diving in the Great Barrier Reef. We have seen so many sharks, parrotfish, nemo and sting rays so far and today we have met the first turtle. Amazing to see them swimming around. Hopefully in the next days we will get the chance to see some more turtles.

    These overnight trips into the reef are really expensive (almost 900$ per person for 2 nights), so we decided to join the Reef Encounter Hostie Program. That means today at 2pm our time as normal guests on board our ship ends and we have to start working on this boat. To stay for another 3 nights and to dive for free we have to clean the dishes, do the laundry and serve the meals on board. It is a very good deal for us, because there are just another 3 guests on board right now. So we don't have to work really much and we probably get another 12 dives for free.

    Der nächste Tag mitten im Great Barrier Reef. Wir haben auf den ersten 10 Tauchgängen schon so einiges gesehen und erlebt. Egal ob Nemo, riesige Papageienfische, kleine Rochen oder unzählige Riffhaie - alle haben wir schon gesehen. Und heute kam auch die erste Schildkröte 🐢 vorbei. Einfach nur schön diese Tiere Unterwasser zu sehen. Hoffentlich bekommen wir in den nächsten Tagen noch mehr zu sehen.

    Allerdings endet heute um 14 Uhr unsere Zeit als normale Gäste an Bord von unserem Boot, denn wir werden Hosties! Das bedeutet ab heute tauchen, essen und schlafen wir hier gratis aber dafür müssen wir einfache arbeiten wie Fenster putzen, Geschirr spülen, Essen servieren etc. erledigen. Aber wir müssen uns zum Glück nicht überarbeiten denn zurzeit sind nur drei weitere Gäste an Bord und auch in den nächsten Tagen werden maximal fünf Gäste an Bord sein. Diese Boote sind eigentlich unfassbar teuer (900$ p. P. für 2 Nächte und 10 Tauchgänge) doch so bekommen wir 5 Nächte und 22 Tauchgänge für unser Geld.    Leggi altro

    Tag 2 - Unser neues Zuhause

    On our first day we have already done three dives including one at night. The night dive was really impressive with so many sharks around us.

    The boat, food and the crew are all great and thanks to covid there are almost no tourists in Queensland and on our boat. The boat itself isn't very big but it has everything we need and we are almost the only guests anyway. I made some great shots with the drone - and yes it is really looking like this!

    Bereits am ersten Tag waren wir einmal schnorcheln und dreimal tauchen. Highlight bisher war der Nachttauchgang. Um uns herum schwammen unfassbar viele Haie und riesige Papageienfische. Das Great Barrier Reef ist wirklich unglaublich! Janine hatte zunächst großen Respekt vor einem Tauchgang im dunkeln und noch dazu mit Haien. Doch nach dem Tauchgang waren alle Sorgen weg, denn es war ein unfassbares Erlebnis.

    Wie sieht das Leben auf unserem Boot aus?

    5:55 Uhr klingelt der Wecker
    6:30 Uhr: Erster Tauchgang
    7:30 Uhr: Frühstück
    8:30 Uhr: Schnorcheln
    10:30 Uhr: Zweiter Tauchgang
    12:00 Uhr: Mittagessen
    13:30 Uhr: Schnorcheln
    15:30 Uhr: Dritter Tauchgang
    18:00 Uhr: Abendessen
    19:00 Uhr: Nachttauchgang

    Es wird also nicht langweilig! Dank Corona ist das Boot zurzeit auch nahezu komplett leer so das statt knapp 50 Gästen weniger als 10 an Bord sind. Ein Traum für uns, vor allem mit dieser Aussicht aufs Meer. Und ja, es sieht tatsächlich so aus - die Bilder sind nicht bearbeitet und wurden so von unserer Drohne gemacht.    Leggi altro

    Zwei White Tip Reef SharksFinde Nemo!

    Great Barrier Reef - Tag 1

    Now we are in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. Our boat is pretty empty so we can really enjoy it. First stop on our cruise was the Saxon Reef. Here we had a fast snorkeling session before we did our first scuba dive later the day. The first impressions are already amazing. In the next days we will do a minimum of 16 dives, so more pictures to come soon!

    Nun sind wir für die nächsten fünf Nächte mitten im Great Barrier Reef. Nachdem es von Cairns ca. 90 Minuten mit dem Boot aufs offene Meer ging war unser erster Stop das Saxon Reef. Kurz nach der Ankunft waren wir auch schon ein erstes Mal schnorcheln und tauchen. Hier gab es viele kleine bunte Fische, ein paar kleine Rochen und viele bunte Korallen. Ein sehr guter Start ins Abenteuer Great Barrier Reef.

    Übrigens: Die Wassertemperatur liegt bei 25-26 Grad, es weht kein Wind und das Meer ist platt. Hoffentlich bleibt es so :)    Leggi altro

    Josephine Falls - Wasserfall mit Rutsche

    Last stop before we drive back to Cairns are the Josephine Falls. Really nice falls and we could slide down the last part of the waterfall. So cool.

    Letzter Stop bevor es zurück nach Cairns geht sind die Josephine Falls. Ein richtig cooler Wasserfall mit eingebauter Rutsche. Besser gehts nicht!Leggi altro

    Etty Bay - Cassowary gefunden!

    For the night we drove to the Etty Bay. It is a tiny Bay with a beautiful beach and surrounded by rainforest. There is not much more than a small caravan park and a few houses. We got a nice little spot on the beachfront so we could enjoy our dinner even more. Beside the beauty of the bay we came here to see another unique animal that lives in Australia only: A cassowary!
    It took us a while but in the early morning the cassowary finally came to explore the beach and caravan park :)

    Für die Nacht ging es in die Etty Bay, eine kleine Bucht mit traumhaftem Strand und das ganze mitten im Regenwald. Eigentlich schon Grund genug für einen Besuch doch der Hauptgrund warum wir hier her gekommen sind sind die Cassowaries. Ein weiteres Tier dass es nur hier in Australien gibt. Es hat bis in die frühen Morgenstunden gedauert aber wir haben ein Cassowary gefunden :)
    Unser Abendessen gab es dann direkt am Strand vor unserem Zelt. Eine wirklich schöne Bucht die Etty Bay!    Leggi altro

    Babinda Boulders

    In Cairns we booked a scuba diving cruise to the Outer Great Barrier Reef. Because of the weather we decided to start that adventure not before Monday morning so we now have another two days to explore the region. We started with the Babinda Boulders. A nice place in the middle of the rainforest. Great to have a swim in a crystal clear but cold creek.

    Wir haben eine Taichsafari ins äußere Great Barrier Reef gebucht. Allerdings wollen wir dafür das perfekte Wetter haben weshalb wir erst am Montag aufs Boot gehen. Daher haben wir jetzt noch zwei Tage Zeit um die Region südlich von Cairns zu entdecken. Los ging es mit den Babinda Boulders. Es ist eine kleine Oase mitten im Regenwald und perfekt zum schwimmen. Ganz ohne Krokodile, Haie, Quallen und sonstigen Kreaturen.    Leggi altro

    Murray Falls & Hinchinbrook Island

    We continued up the coast to Cairns. On the way we had some great views on Hinchinbrook Island and stopped on a campground at the Murray Falls for the night. After a swim in the morning we drove the last 200km up to Cairns.

    Weiter ging unser Roadtrip bis nach Cairns. Auf dem Weg konnten wir noch ein paar nette Blicke auf Hinchinbrook Island genießen bevor wir die Nacht an den Murray Falls verbracht haben. Ab jetzt sind wir auch offiziell im tropischen Norden von Queensland.    Leggi altro
