  • Wellington, New Zealand

    1 de fevereiro, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We chose to spend the day in Wellington north of the city in beautiful forested mountains riding bikes again. Our guide, Isaac, picked us up at the port and drove us approx 30 minutes out of town to an area called the Upper Hutt. There we got our bikes, a bag lunch and water in our bike packs, and we headed off for our 18 mile adventure.
We biked a section of the New Zealand Great Trail called the Remutaka Rail Trail. This is a bike/hike trail that goes throughout the country.
This ride was more than we expected, but it was great and proved very memorable.
We were on gravel trails that were both very flat, very steep, very wide and very narrow. We were in 3 or 4 tunnels. And ride along very high cliffs. I also managed to find the only swamp we saw all day. We were on the narrowest, curviest and steepest part of the ride. A guy came from the opposite direction around a curve in the middle of the 3 ft wide trail and didn’t see me right in front of him, he was watching something in the trees. I took the lesser of two evils( swamp or 30 ft ravine) and landed in the swampy water. Trying to keep my phone and watch out of the mud while Jim snaps a pic! The guy stopped, apologized and helped Jim get the bike off of me. It’s heavy! I was Aok and we finished the last 6 miles of the ride and I enjoyed a sandwich and a very cold Stella at the Royal Hotel in a little town called Featherstone. Them Issac took us back to the ship. The bike needed a good power wash and I found swamp plants in my right ear when we got back to the ship, but we are Aok. No injury but lots of great laughs when people saw the Swamp Rider coming back to the ship. (At the time of this upload, we are not certain the denim shirt will be recovered as well down in the intensive care laundry as the shoes. We’ll see tomorrow)

  • Rotorua, New Zealand

    30 de janeiro, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This is definitely a favorite little seaside town. The beach is magical. So much contrast in the volcanic formations, the sand, plant life and water. It’s the last week of a 6 week summer vacation here for kids so the beach was kinda busy with families enjoying a beautiful day. We chatted with a local woman who wanted to fill us in on the floods that killed 6 campers here a few weeks ago. We remembered it from the news. There is controversy because they had just removed 6 large, old oak trees above the campsite because they were not native to NZ and she believes this clearing contributed to the landslide. Apparently nobody can remember a landslide event happening here. The area was blocked off with fencing and the mountain is closed off to hikers now.Leia mais

  • Auckland, New Zealand

    29 de janeiro, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

The weather, as we slowly entered the harbor at sunrise, was beautiful. We docked right in the city again and headed out in search of the real reason for this cruise- CHOCOLATE! Took the ferry over to the little port city of Devonport and found Jim’s favorite New Zealand Chocolate shop. He’s like a migrating bird. He just remembers every turn to get back to this tiny place off the beaten path.
Then a quick stroll down the shopping streets and back on the ferry to get back for lunch.
We found some fish and chips in the wharf and I found an amazing local IPA! Then we took our 10,000 step feet back to the cabin to nap. Jim has had the flu and slept for 3 days so this was a lot for him but he did great. We love Auckland. People are wonderful and the city is clean and very alive.

  • Day 2 and 3- Papeete, Tahiti

    19 de janeiro, Polinésia Francesa ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

French Polynesia- Days 2 and 3
Today we docked in Papeete, Tahiti. It rained like crazy the first day the first day we arrived. We forfeited a catamaran ride and hung out on the ship. A long nap and nice salmon dinner with Baked Alaska for dessert was substituted.
The second day, we climbed into a van with another couple from Boston, Carol and Burt, and were guided around the 72 mile perimeter of the island.
We saw beautiful gardens, waterfalls, beaches, and learned a lot about local fruit crops. They grow everything in their yards! Guava, avocados, bread fruit, mangos, coconuts, and lots of other delicious morsels I haven’t heard of before.
As we pulled out of port, the rain came down so hard we couldn’t see the water from our veranda. These islands get over 180 inches of rain annually.
We are out to sea for one day and then anchor outside the reef on Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

  • French Polynesia, Day 1- BoraBora

    18 de janeiro, Polinésia Francesa ⋅ 🌧 79 °F

We dodged weather for 4 days and wound up having a great time in Bora Bora and Tahiti. Started the trip with a super fun snorkel trip in Bora Bora with two stops, one in stingray and black tip reef shark shallows and the next in deeper water still inside the lagoon with all kinds of cool fish. I couldn’t get Jim to join me in the water, eve though the guides assured us their sharks were vegetarians, but he did come on the boat ride and serve as photographer and kept the captain company. It was a great day.Leia mais

  • Sea Days are the Best Days

    17 de janeiro, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌧 79 °F

Sea Day #7 on the cruise and we are enjoying the sunshine and beautiful Pacific Blue water. But gusting winds closed the decks outside. I guess they don’t want us blowing overboard.
So two great classes this morning, the first is IPhone Photography 101 and now Sushi making from a visiting world famous chef. Tuna Trivia for ya-
Tuna needs to be frozen at -76 degrees.
We met Ro and Joes Mini Me’s, Roxi and Steve.

  • Back on the Water

    5 de janeiro, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

…and we couldn’t be more excited and grateful to be here! We are so fortunate to be able to return to LA to join the 777 passengers on the Viking Sky ‘26 World Cruise.
This first post comes at the beginning of week 2 as we wake up on the first morning after leaving Oahu.
We have already met lots of neat couples and look forward to making some great memories over the next 5 months. We went whale watching with hiker
/bikers Keith and Roxi from Arizona and Colorado and enjoyed the Honolulu sunset views sans whales.
The Spinner Dolphins we saw were fun to watch. (See video) They are nocturnal and wake-up at sunset to feed.
