  • Day 1 Machame Gate – Machame Camp

    Day 1 Machame route 7 days – Machame Gate (1490m) – Machame Camp (2980m)

    Hiking time: 7 hours

    Distance: Approximately 18 kilometers

    Habitat: Montane forest

    After an early breakfast at the hotel, we were picked up from Arusha (1400m) and driven to the Machame Gate (1490m). At the gate, we met the porters who organized and packed the belongings for the hike. We then begun our ascent into the rainforest.

    Porters are limited to their own kit plus 22kg.

    4 people canceled and it ended up as Sue and I with a crew of 10

  • Day 2 Machame Camp – Shira Camp

    Hiking time: 6 hours

    Distance: Approximately 9 kilometers

    Habitat: Moorland

    After an early morning breakfast, we continued the ascent leaving the rain forest and entering the heathland moorland vegetation. The campsite had a spectacular view of the Western Breach and its glaciers in the East.

  • Day 3 Shira – Lava Tower – Barranco camp

    Day 3 Shira (at 3840m) – Lava Tower (at 4630m) – Barranco camp (at 3950m)

    Hiking time: 7 hours

    Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers

    Habitat: Semi-desert

    Following an early morning breakfast, we left the moorland environment and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. After 5 hours of walking east, we we came face to face with the Lava Tower (4630m) where we had lunch.

    After lunch, we descended from Lava Tower (4630m) to the Barranco Campsite (3950m). The 6800m descent gave us a huge advantage to allow our bodies to adjust to the conditions of high altitude.

  • Day 4 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

    Hiking time: 4-5 hours

    Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers

    Habitat: Alpine desert

    After an early morning breakfast, it was time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Intimating at first glance and a Class 2 hike but an extremely rewarding and beautiful walk / climb . At the top of the Wall, we had a view of Heim Glacier and are above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down into the Karanga Valley. An ideal hiking day for acclimatization.

  • Day 5 Karanga Camp – Barafu Hut

    Day 5 Karanga Camp (3959m) – Barafu Hut (4600m)

    Hiking time: 2-3 hours

    Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers

    Habitat: Alpine desert

    Back up to 4600m. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. The word “barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks.

    The food was always interesting and it's unbelievable what the chef can dish up. This is after 5 days of walking and all has to be carried

  • Day 6 Ascent : Uhuru Peak - Barafu camp

    Day 6 Ascent : Uhuru Peak - Barafu camp

    Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Batavia camp (4600m)

    We started the walk down the glazier, the snow very quickly became slippery as the sun came through the clouds. After Stella Point we were back to the rocky road in between the icy islands.With-in half an hour it all converted into a slope of dusty volcanic ash which was a slippery as the skiing slope

  • Day 6 Ascent : Barafu camp – Mweka

    Day 6 Ascent : Barafu camp - – Mweka (3100m)

    Barafu camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)

    After lunch we continued our descend down to Mweka Hut (3100m) through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, with fog and rain.

    See the one wheel stretcher for people who are immobile.

  • Day 7 Mweka camp - Arusha

    Day 7 Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m) - Arusha

    Hiking time: 3 hours

    Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers

    Habitat: Forest

    Big celebration full of dancing and singing after breakfast.
    We then had an unbelievable 12km walk to Mkwena gate, lunch and then an upgrade to the Sheraton Hotel in Arusha. Sue bought herself a Masai blanket.Read more
