Sardegna to Messina Gallico

A plan in GypsyDjango seldom works out as it should. Leaving Sardegna with Russell monitoring our planned 74 hours to Vulcano island in the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. As things were going so well when we got to Vulcano we continued and started our passage to the terrifying Messina Strait. Timing it with the most amazing wind behind us we made the time slot to be able to enter the strait with favourable currents before the tide turned. The alternate would have been to moor outside of the mouth if we did not make it. By fortune and great excitement we got there and continued our journey to an anchorage in the Messina for a rest overnight before our crossing to Greece. Our final time 75 hours - much faster than our ETA to Vulcano which was ten hours behind. The anti fouling has changed everything and such an awesome investment. I think me jumping to make GypsyDjango lighter also helped. On the journey we were accompanied by three sets of dolphins, 4 sparrows migrating and a dove, lost in flight who stayed for a welcome rest overnight.Read more

Messina to Zakynthos Agios Nikoloas. Three sets of dolphins, 4 turtles, twenty plus migrant birds and too bloody much engine. 80 percent of the trip. Uuuuuugh!!!

Agios Nikoloas to Agalas Caves. It’s taken 3 years to get to Zakynthos if the wonderful weather had played along but finally we are getting to see shipwreck beach. However the plan to spend the night was prevented as this year the implemented the ban on anchorage and swimming. So we visited and proceeded further along the magnificent island to a stunning bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs ✨

Agalas Caves to Keri Caves. Magnificent- what a honour to be visiting this Island and these beautiful coves. A horrific nights sleep as while the bays are idyllic- the anchorage is challenging and a night with our anchor under rocks was a loud and unpleasant one. But totally worth the scenery.

Keri Caves to Keri bay. Not a pretty anchorage but convenient for the wind. A crazy sail around the corner with 30 knot gusts and a brilliant speed with a jib only.

Sami to Fiskardo. Magical picturesque Fiskardo. I love this town. Mooring @ 29 Euro (no water, no power) but the alternative anchorage wasn’t great with a strong wind on the nose in 14m depth. A great ride through the ruins, twisted trees and along cliffs. The 13 Euro gin and tonic also didn’t impress so drinks onboard GypsyDjango tonight. Much more affordable 💛✨🔱

Kastos Wasp Bay

Fiskardo to Kastos wasp bay. A new Island for us - how exciting. It has been a long time since we have had this on our list. Lovely bay but not great enough as an island to return. Great opportunity to explore by bike and have a divine cup of Greek coffee at the picturesque windmill.

Fiskardo to Kastos. Our first visit to Kastos - wasp bay. No wasps in sight. A small island easily navigated by bike. A most beautiful bay. Absolutely perfect. So perfec we paused our schedule to spend two nights here 😊

Kastos to Lefkada Marina. Necessity - that’s the only reason we go into marinas and specifically avoid this one. As per usual a freak unexpected wind came up for just under an hour of over 30 knots- not showing on any forecast. An hour later and an hour of diesel keeping us away from the pier as the anchor can only be dropped as far out as the floating new floating jetty in front of you. However we were more than overdue on a clean and to drop our code 0 for repairs of the rips along the luff. The last time we also had a bad experience was a day before the Medicane in 2020 and we had to put our dinghy between us and the pier ( we were new to med mooring and didn’t seat the anchor or put enough out. And a freak wind ripped through as well. Oh this time and a boat rammed into us when mooring badly 😂 avoid marinas!
