    Arriving in camp

    August 29, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Markson pointed out several trees as we drove. These included the ubiquitous acacia trees. He explained that elephants eat the leaves in dry conditions in order to survive longer without water. The Masai do the same. He also showed us the tissue paper tree. Masais never buy tissues or toilet paper. They just use the leaves of this tree. We stopped so that Markson could get some leaves off a sandpaper tree so that we would understand how it got its name! You could easily use the leaves to file your nails!

We arrived at Miti Mingi Eco Camp at around 6.45pm. We were shown to our accommodation, which was a safari tent with a concrete built bathroom behind. The whole thing was covered in a corrugated roof. It was dated but perfectly adequate. We settled in (we were here for two nights) and then went to the bar for a drink. A buffet-style dinner was served for everyone at 7.30pm. Similar to lunch, it was rice, beef stew, and roti with pineapple and watermelon for dessert. Markson joined us. We found out that he is married with a three-year-old son, but that he is looking for a second wife (his father had six wives!). He asked Mark to help him find someone! He asked him to be his English enkaputi (matchmaker)! 😂

We went to bed at about 9pm as we had an early start the next morning.
