A cheetah sighting!
August 30, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C
As we were on our way out of the park, we saw a cheetah resting behind a bush. This sighting topped off a brilliant day!!
At about 4pm, we exited the park and went back to Markson’s village to fill up with fuel. We met his wife, who works in the garage.
Markson’s instructions from Omondi were to take us to see the Masai cultural experience. We explained that on our itinerary, it was optional, and we hadn’t paid for it. We asked him to take us straight back to camp. He did, but it seemed to take forever! We’d had eleven hours on the road, and, as amazing as it had been, we just wanted it to end!
On the way to camp, we saw:
• Cows
• Goats
• Zebra
• Lots of antelopes
• Wildebeest
• Warthogs
Markson stopped to get us sticks to use as toothbrushes complete with toothpaste from the drunken tree, so called because if elephants chew it, they act as if they are drunk. Apparently, it doesn’t have the same effect on people. It was chilli hot and left a horrible burning sensation in the back of my throat. Markson happily chewed on his stick all the way home!
Once we got through the gate to exit the park itself, Markson said we were going to camp via a short cut. 35 minutes later, we arrived! It felt like we were being punished for not going to the cultural experience! Mark was in a lot of pain by the time we got back. 12 hours in the car had almost finished him off!
We were planning to shower, but there was no electric and no hot water, so we gave up on that idea! Instead, we went to the bar until it was time for dinner. We had chicken, mashed potato, and vegetables. It was all good. Omondi turned up with Markson to tell us about our 5am start tomorrow. Markson seemed very nervous around him, so we made sure we sang his praises!
Omondi suggested a change of itinerary. He said we should miss Amboseli National Park on day four and go to Lake Nakuru instead. It will mean less driving and different animals and landscapes to see. We agreed. Now, he just needs to clear it with the company.
After dinner, there was a short but heavy rainstorm.Read more
