    The Wash House Pottery, tucked away in Blackburns Yard, is another of Whitby's hidden gems. Laureen Shaw bought the 300-year-old former wash-house in the 1970s. At the time, it was being used by local fishermen to store their nets in. There was a demolition order on the building, so the ceiling needed to be propped up and the walls taken down individually in order to restore it. Now, Laureen makes pots, tiles, and house signs.
