    Augustín Lara for short

    April 28, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

While walking around Tlacotalpan, we were excited to find out that the great songwriter Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Lara y Aguirre del Pino was born there. Outside the Spanish-speaking world, his most famous songs are "Granada", "Solamente Una Vez" (You belong to My Heart) and "Piensa en mí", which have been recorded by numerous international singers, including Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza and José Carreras.

Sometime around 1927, when Lara was working in cabarets, he was involved in an argument with a showgirl named Estrella, who slashed him in the face with a broken bottle. The altercation left a distinct scar known as a Glasgow smile, which is made by a cut from the corners of a victim's mouth up to the ears.

    Here, Mario Lanza singing Granada.
